World Web shooter shop class - Part 3

thank you Pllagunos! I appreciate that. I think that PVOH is good in powdered form. That will be a good step for the beginning of this project. Until we can repeatedly make it at home successfully, that would probably be better. As for me, I want to be able to screw with it's properties in the future, so I will focus on the synthesis.

STEP 1: formula Synthesis

The ingredients for making polyvinyl alcohol are actually available in bulk:
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/469236/polyvinyl-alcohol-PVA

Polyvinyl acetate: http://www.discountschoolsupply.com...keyword=2266&gclid=CMuXtLrdicACFSdk7AodyVQA8w

Methanol:http://biodieseltutorial.utahbiodieselsupply.com/buyingmethanol/

Sodium hydroxide:http://chemistry.about.com/b/2014/03/29/where-to-buy-sodium-hydroxide-or-lye.htm

Now this info is only for those who want to make web fluid in bulk. If you don't want to experiment, pllagunos's method is sooooo much better.

Step 2:spinning the fluid: http://www.amazon.com/DELUXE-BATTER...d=1407710835&sr=1-2&keywords=glue+gun+battery

Step 3. Pump or cartridge?

I say pump:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ultra-quiet.../131257841019?pt=BI_Pumps&hash=item1e8f93b57b

or

http://www.alita.com/dcpump/micropump.php

Why? We could literally use any container to hold the web fluid. It would be super small by comparison to the solenoid valves, it would last longer, and I think it would require the same amount of electricity. You could use the pump in the bracelet if it is like the second pump or the belt/backpack for the first pump. The only problem was that pressure wouldn't allow the fluid to fly that far.

http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2013/01/this-summers-best-water-gun/ the pump for the second gun says that 25 feet is the average distance, whereas the pumping mechanism could fire 40 feet.

that is really REALLY good info, I was wondering if with the pump we would be able to use a tank for the web fluid instead of a container?

Lol is not that complicated, we were talking about how to get materials (pvoh) for the formula and about the shooter (the pump).

I've been logging most of my progress on my YouTube channel since December of 2012.

Ya mind telling me what your channel name is?

Anyway, it's slightly assuring to know that everyone is working on different designs (I don't HAVE to read the whole forum from the beginning). I've been working on a design for the past couple of days. Maybe in a couple more I can show it you. :D

One more question: Is the webbing formula forum inactive? Are we incorporating both aspects into a single thread?

I don't know a lot about those type of pumps (and maybe I'm misunderstanding all), but if they can be activated manualy we could attach the pump to a bracelet and conect it to a hose which is conected to a tank in a backpack, the tank will have the fluid under pressure (about 40-50 psi) so when you activate the pump it will shot the fluid. However we still need a heating system which can be made of a nozzle with lots of small copper tubes inside wrapped in a resistance (nichrome wire I think it is called).

Let me know what you guys think.

I think that the webbing formula forum is inactive and his chanel is spider device.

Ok, I lied as to no more questions, but I hope you guys understand since I've been gone for a while.

-What exactly is the purpose of a surfactant in this formula?
-What adhesive are we using?
-I'm somewhat confused as to how the spinneret works (can't find info on it on RWT and the wiki article only slightly helps lol)

-The surfactant acts as a substance that allows the formula to expand and or stick when it cones into contact with a surface.
-Pretty much whatever, if you're going your own way on this.
-Not only does the spinneret act as a directing mechanism (condense and direct formula for aim), but it also activates the shear thinning or thickening properties of the formula. It also mimics the actual spider Web manufacturing process of making several threads raveling around each other for enhanced strength.

Hey, I think I just found a way to both pump web fluid at high speeds and twist the fibers as the are formed to increase strength. Not only that, we could probably attach a heating element to the design, and my favorite parts? You can make it at home easy in a sleek profile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RryL3XwUO50

It's called the Hamilton water jet. It's like an airplane jet engine that pumps fluid.

Sound familiar?

http://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/14910/why-doesnt-spider-mans-web-stick-to-his-hands

anyone know a solvent for teflon? attempting to coat a part in it, and I'd rather not just wrap it around. Planning on dipping it and letting the solvent dry, applying several coats if needed.

but the hamilton water jet is big, unless you have it on a backpack connected to a second valve/pump in your wrist it would be very difficult to have the HWJ in your wrist.
However is a good idea to have it in a backpack with the fluid and a hose conected to a second pump which has a heating system and a nozzle.

As far as I know, there are no solvents for teflon that you can get at a store or something. I think it only dissolves at really high temperatures in substances really high in their fluorine concentration.

Wow! Fifteen posts since I last logged in. Also, would salt and vinegar speed up the solidification of the formula? I think someone posted about this a while back, but I can't find the page.

Does anyone recommend a cheap and easy-to-find material for the cartridges? It could literally be anything that is widely available, since my shooter only fires water anyway. Any ideas?

Kind regards, SPIDER :bh:

if they can be made of any material you can buy polymorph at amazon or ebay and make your own cartridges.

Hey Wadaltmon,

In your video, you used some type of device "trigger mechanism" to activate the battery of the solenoid valve. I have never used one of those before nor have I a clue about how it works. Can you explain to me how it works and where I can buy one? (Or just send me some links)
I was thinking that that device could be the the button on the wrist that Peter has. (http://imgur.com/Iq19VHe)

The video I am referring to:

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks Wadaltmon!

The trigger mechanism that I reference in that video there is actually the main body of the shooter. I designed it myself. It uses a program I made that was transferred onto the MCU that I put into there.

In my first few videos on that channel I show how that thing works. The program makes it so you have to double tap the trigger. You can see that working in the videos.

I can't believe you're back, I haven't even looked at this page in months, atleast 4 or 5 maybe 6.

I know it sounds stupid but if we can what if we dissolved real spider silk it would be stronger than steel and cheap just buy a tarantula and acetone since tarantulas produce a lot of web at once. I'm new so don't make fun of me :)
