BONKERS: THE NEXT ‘WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT’
And, srry about the typo in the poll. Didn't notice that I accidentally pressed an 'i' until after I hit submit. If Mods can fix it, please do.
Right now there is a current craze with bringing 80s animated films to the silver screen. There has also been talk about what properties from the 90s could also make a fluid transition to the silver screen and there is one that I haven’t really seen anyone else mention and it’s perhaps one of the most obvious translations to screen and that is the animated show ‘Bonkers’! I actually didn’t think about it as well until very recently and then it hit me that this would make for an amazing film and possibly a great franchise as well.
The Premise of ‘Bonkers’
The premise of the series was that Bonkers D. Bobcat, an anthropomorphic bobcat who was a popular cartoon star (he appeared in Disney's Raw Toonage shorts in the fictional world of Bonkers as well) had washed out of show business and became a cop. He was made the junior partner of Detective Lucky Piquel, a grim and ill-tempered human who hates toons. Throughout the series, the pair work together to solve crimes in the Hollywood, California region. Bonkers repeatedly tried to win Piquel's praise, but usually just ended up messing things up with his antics.
After several years of working with Bonkers, Piquel was given an FBI job in Washington, DC, and with great glee was finally able to leave Bonkers, but finally realized that after all the times he hated Bonkers, he had taken a liking to him.
How would this translate to screen?
Easy, do you remember the film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’? Well, this film would have a very similar look and production values. An animated world mixed with a live action world. Something interesting to note is that the film actually inspired the show ‘Bonkers’!
The films of the 80s had a certain magical aura around them and the film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ is definitely one of those films that’s still considered a classic by many to this day. ‘Bonkers’ allows for a similar world to be reopened anew.
I honestly don’t see how this film can’t be a hit!
