BONKERS: THE NEXT ‘WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT’

And, srry about the typo in the poll. Didn't notice that I accidentally pressed an 'i' until after I hit submit. If Mods can fix it, please do.

Right now there is a current craze with bringing 80s animated films to the silver screen. There has also been talk about what properties from the 90s could also make a fluid transition to the silver screen and there is one that I haven’t really seen anyone else mention and it’s perhaps one of the most obvious translations to screen and that is the animated show ‘Bonkers’! I actually didn’t think about it as well until very recently and then it hit me that this would make for an amazing film and possibly a great franchise as well.

The Premise of ‘Bonkers’

The premise of the series was that Bonkers D. Bobcat, an anthropomorphic bobcat who was a popular cartoon star (he appeared in Disney's Raw Toonage shorts in the fictional world of Bonkers as well) had washed out of show business and became a cop. He was made the junior partner of Detective Lucky Piquel, a grim and ill-tempered human who hates toons. Throughout the series, the pair work together to solve crimes in the Hollywood, California region. Bonkers repeatedly tried to win Piquel's praise, but usually just ended up messing things up with his antics.

After several years of working with Bonkers, Piquel was given an FBI job in Washington, DC, and with great glee was finally able to leave Bonkers, but finally realized that after all the times he hated Bonkers, he had taken a liking to him.

How would this translate to screen?

Easy, do you remember the film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’? Well, this film would have a very similar look and production values. An animated world mixed with a live action world. Something interesting to note is that the film actually inspired the show ‘Bonkers’!

The films of the 80s had a certain magical aura around them and the film ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ is definitely one of those films that’s still considered a classic by many to this day. ‘Bonkers’ allows for a similar world to be reopened anew.

I honestly don’t see how this film can’t be a hit!

Completely agree. With the right director, and done in Roger Rabbit style with Live action and animation, it could come off well. I was watching Who Framed Rabit just the other day, it's a classic and had a great cast. But this wouldn't be the next Roger Rabbit as Bonkers was made in the 90s and the creators have said it was inspired by Roger Rabbit.

All other Animated/Live Action films have been absolutely terrible, althought Space Jam was ok. What something like this needs is a good director. Oh, there another Live action/Animated film coming out later this year called Enchanted but it looks horrible.

You really think Disney would revive this series when they don't even show it on Toon Disney? I'dbe up for it though.

The show itself was essentially a spin-off of Roger Rabbit, or it was supposed to be a cartoon series for Roger Rabbit, but they couldn't get the rights to the character to use him on the show so they made Bonkers instead.

Could it work? I dunno. Every attempt at recreating the magic of Roger Rabbit has been a miserable failure. Look at Back In Action. Bad, bad movie. And it bombed. And from the beginning they said they were aiming for something of Roger Rabbit caliber. Didn't happen.

I liked the cartoon when I was younger. But not every cartoon from my childhood needs to be a movie you know?

Roger Rabbit is a true classic though. I hope it doesn't get remade.

Sounds interesting but I would rather see Marvel/DC do a Roger Rabbit like movie with their characters. I have to see how Disney's upcoming non-pixar cartoons turn out before I gain any faith in them not adding yet another turd to the live action/animated genre.

The director of Back In Action was a one hit wonder.

The director of Roger Rabbit was an Academy Award winning filmmaker behind Back to the Future.

It's all in who they have direct it.

What about Space Jam? Doesn't that count?

Space Jam was successful for it's time, but that movie is simply - blech.

Jim Rome's cameo was fun though.

I never liked Bonkers, so no.

Maybe if this was 1993 when the show was actually airing. Love Bonkers though.
