What are your complaints? What would you do differently? *SPOILERS* - Part 1

I think what I dislike most about the film is that I feel it wasted its potential. It could've been amazing. I'm optimistic the sequel will be better (and hoping it'll be completely standalone, so I can pretend MOS was never made), but they're going to have to convince me.

it is the most awesome superman movie ever made to date.

Not really. It's the most awesome looking, though.

I wish I cared how you felt. Unfortunately...:o

EDIT: Just kidding. I don't wish that at all.

yes, because our lives depend on whether we like a movie or not...

I still like the movie, but I'm wondering if it's due to Phantom Menace-style denial, or I can actually get past the problems.

On this note, is everyone willing to accept Man of Steel as their powerful saviour or pay the consequences of eternal damnation?

u gotta watch it again to decide. :p
are they really problems to you??? or because you are not get used to this kinda treatment.

This is a much more reasonable and respectable point of view than what some of the more...fanatical apologists have adhered to.

There's a thread in one of the movie forums called 'Bad movies you love', or something to that effect, and I really think more people should have a look at it. Would support the idea that not every film we love has to be a masterpiece, or at the very least temper a few egos.

In a couple years time when we get an actual good Superman film people will look back on Man of Steel with less than favorable eyes I believe.

Or may retroactively like the movie more as was the case with Batman Begin (IMHO) a very overrated movie but is looked upon more favourably after the superb TDK.

i would like to think the opposite. ;)
i think by then, they can fully enjoy and appreciate the movie. they can fully move past the donner's era...

I loved Begins when it came out and was underwhelmed the first time I saw the Dark Knight. Though I did see the latter after a day of no sleep. Still really enjoy all three though Begins has a special place in my heart as an amazing origin story with flaws I can happily get over.

To a degree, although I really don't think anybody retroactively liked it. Begins may have had a somewhat lukewarm response at first by fans but it was never really a divisive film in the same way that Man of Steel is. You can't really look at Begins objectively and say it's a poorly made film, yes it has weak points but overall it has a solid foundation from a story telling perspective. I think it was more a case of a lot of people ended up appreciating Begins more either for it complimenting TDK or for them liking it more because it's more Batman focused. TDK is without doubt the better of the two films but I understanding why some prefer it. If/when Man of Steel gets a sequel that from a story telling and film making perspective is superior then I think a large chunk of people will turn on MoS a la Superman Returns.

MoS 2 is like ASM 2, in that I think the sequel will make or break the frachise. Superman has a slight advantage over Spider-Man in that the sequel may get a 'super team boost'.

Eh, I think Spidey will always be ok, he's one of the few characters that's able to withstand a bad movie. Man of Steel 2 needs to not only be better, it needs to be great.

Mos has had a polarizing effect among the fanboys , but the truth is , there's very few of these films that have a universal agreement among that group. I'd say TDK , Spiderman 2, Avengers and STM are examples of films in which the community kinda seems to agree are excellent.

Other than that , several the other flicks which have gone over well with the GA are polarized among fans . That's not to say films like MOS, and Iron Man 3 aren't flawed, but it is to say that fans being polarized over something like MOS isn't something new or shocking. Its basically what's happened with ASM, IM3, TDKR, STID, SR, XMFC , etc.

btw, what make you think you can get an actual good Superman film in a couple years time??? WB has failed to do that in the last 35 years!

I don't think this film was as bad as people are making it out to be. It was definitely flawed but not terrible.

For me, the hardest thing to accept was that it didn't FEEL like a superhero movie. It felt like a sci-fi action movie. Thinking back to Batman Begins though, large parts of that didn't really feel like a superhero movie either. It was more about the Man begind the legend of Batman.

So for me, the main flaw is that I don't think this approach necessarily works for Superman. He is supposed to be THE superhero, the quintessential one. I dont want to see a conflicted, tortured loner, at least not to that extent. I want to see someone who rises above it all... I don't think it's the fact that he's an outcast that makes him interesting... I think it's the fact that Supes is an alien, one of the last of his race, who dedicates his WHOLE existence to protecting an entire planet. There is so much potential to explore the psyche of someone doing that, someone who tries to 'save everyone'.

Man of Steel didn't focus on that, in fact it seemed to teach weird morals... That for the greater good, it's okay for people to die if it saves more. The Superman I know wouldn't have let Johnathon Kent die.... He would have IGNORED him and saved him anyway. It would have been a great character moment, to explain to the audience exactly where Supes stands. Superman is the hero who doesn't pick and choose what events are worthy of him, he's the hero who tries to save everyone.

A point you made is the defining difference between Man of Steel and Batman Begins. The latter was about Bruce Wayne this one is about the plot.

Yeah I agree I wished it felt more like a superhero movie. I still really enjoy the movie, seen it numerous times, cannot wait for the home release etc. But I wish it felt less like a sci fi movie, less alien invasion, and more sheer wonderment at this being coming to Earth and saving people.

Sci fi's are cool, but a super hero movie, when done right, will make my hairs stand on end (in a good way)

I said this in the JL thread but Mos and TDK Trilogy are trying to be more 'what if' type of movies were as Marvel are very much playing in a superhero universe, hence it being more of a sci-fi movie than a superhero one. I don't generally have a problem with him not saving certain people because the film tries to infused a real world psychology to extraordinary events.

I agree, and I liked the film. I feel like the Pa Kent scene felt like a writing exercise. "Okay class: In 10 minutes, write a really dramatic death scene!"
