What console is better for me?

This thread interests me, because I'm having the same debate myself. I'd like to have 360, but the $100 wifi (my house uses wireless dsl), plus $50/yr online fee, and still-high failure rate makes it hard for me to really commit to 360. Plus PS3 has blu-ray and HD that is easier to swap and upgrade, and once PSN has Home I think the online services will be almost similiar.

Seeing how you listed nothing but Cons for the 360, and Pros for the PS3, I think you've already decided.

You know what made my decision...is I'm an adopter of downloadable titles lately. I love the Virtual Console and WiiWare, and use both of these services very frequently.

The 360 has a slew of downloadable titles I really want, and to me most of the games I want are multi-platform, so the DL stuff won the argument for me.

I want Castle Crashers, Galaga: Legions, TMNT, Pac-Man: CE, Geometry Wars 2 and such.

I've been really into XBL titles lately, too. It was a great summer for them, Braid, Castle Crashers, and no matter which system anyone has they should download BC: Rearmed

yeah the system's are taking different routes with this stuff. XBL definetly has more to offer as far as content. The PS3, though is where you'll find bigger downloadable titles like Warhawk, Siren, Gran Turismo Prologue, Wipeout HD, Socom, which for the system, HDD size is more important. So far its only been Sony titles offered up on there but this week Burnout Paradise will be the first 3rd party retail game offered as a downloadable

I do agree I wish Sony would step it up on some of the downloadable games. There aren't as many PS1 titles as I wish there were. Some weeks are great, but for every Castlevania SoTN we have a Rampage. The full games are good tho, and reasonably priced IMO.

The other titles tend to be hit and miss. The Zombie Vampire or whatever deal (forget the name atm) that has episodes looks semi interesting, but not enough for a purchase. The Last Guy, Superstardust HD, and a few others look good. Snakeball, that RC Car racing game and a few others...no thnx.

As for demo's, I'm content enough. I loved the demo's for a bit and had atleast 15 demos at one time. As my PS3 collection grew I really didn't care and started deleting the demo's. I now mainly use them to help me decide if I want to purchase something.

Inbetween PS1 and PS2 BC, lots of good PS3 games, and the demo's, I really have more stuff to mess with than I have time for. So it takes a decent quality or fun DL for me to care enough to purchase it.

In another thread, I've mentioned the pros for 360 there. The only reason why I haven't went ahead and buy PS3 is because I do want to try some 360 exclusives like Gears of War, and I heard the upcoming DLC for GTA4 is really awesome. But because I have another console, cost is a big factor and my wife won't let me spend too much on a new console. So having to buy wifi adapter for $100 is a real downer.

I had a talk with my best friend the other day, and found out that he (along with some of our mutual friends) are all buying or considering to buy 360. Although I was leaning toward PS3 and its blu-ray drive, the possibility of playing with my friends is ultimately what seals the deal for me on 360. I think I'll buy Pro edition since I'll have to pay $100 for wifi adapter (grumble), and extra controller for 2-player action.

PS3 is the better bang-for-your-buck. You get a Blu-Ray player, great games library, backwards compatibility with PS1 games, PS2 games (if you have the 80 gig); you also get a full out media center which can store videos, endless amounts of mp3's, surf the net, purchase things online at the SONYstore etc...and free online play.

I know, and that's why I was leaning toward PS3 early on, but playing with friends is still better than anything else and that's why I may get 360 after all.

Fair enough. If you have friends with 360's you can play with, then go for it.

Okay, just to be upfront with FULL discretion...I'll toss my record out here on the floor so nobody makes things up based on my comments.

I own a Xbox 360. Not exactly because I'm an Xbox fanboy, but for two major reasons. 1) PS3 was, and in some ways still is, out of my price range so it was cheaper for me to get the 360. and 2) I decided the game libary the 360 offered was more up my alley than the realtively thinner PS3 libary, in my honest judgement. Off the top of my head, I can say that Drake's Fortune, Metal Gear Solid 4, MLB the Show and DC Universe are games that I am sure that I would purchase with a PS3. The multiplatform games are a toss up nowadays, although a few years ago...everyone would side with the Xbox 360 version of anything because developers were still learning how to work with the PS3 hardware, so in some instances I had heard or read that some fumbles were made because of the learning curve (since the PS3 is actually newer than the 360, and some say the hardware is slightly more complicated...dunno how true that is).

I do own an Xbox, and a PS2 and a PS1. I'm actually a huge Metal Gear freak, I own every game edition of the Metal Gear Solid Saga. On the Xbox side, I'm probably as big a Splinter Cell freak as well.

So, honestly...I'm down the middle. I'm not a fanboy. And if I were, I'd be a snakebitten one since Microsoft has screwed me over badly in the past few weeks.

I do think that Xbox still has the larger games libary. Lately, PS3 is making a nice run for it's money though. It's worth mentioning too, that Microsoft seems to toss more money at developers for exclusive DLC. So, GTA IV will have downloadable content that is supposed to be exclusive to the 360. Fallout 3 is supposed to have exclusive DLC as well. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.

I've heard that if you're heavy on multiplayer, that there's a greater focus on that with the Xbox 360. I have heard that Sony is aware of this and starting to make strides in they're online service to be more competitive. But as of now, I continue to read and hear that people favor Xbox Live for they're multiplayer action.

The bluRay player that the PS3 comes with is actually a big deal with me. I think that's a huge point in getting the PS3 if you're a 'movie freak' or something, and I am. I have no problem re-purchasing Batman Begins or Iron Man on BluRay to watch it on the PS3.

And the failure rate is something worth noting as well. I have honestly never heard of a single problem with the PS3 breaking down or anything.

The Xbox 360, however, is another story. The Red Rings of Death are the most common and the most feared. There are other Red Rings, however. The other I know of is the one ring of death as well. The 3 year extended warranty applies to the 3 Red Rings of Death, so if you get any other sequence of failure...you may have to pay for repairs. Unless your warranty is still up. So, I'd advise you to just always keep your warranty up. Call them or email them or whatever to make sure your warranty is up and running if it's about to run out....extend it. I believe it's $30 for 1 year and $60 for a 2 year warranty extension.

The failure rate is still pretty high on the 360, and it's pretty frustrating to have to be 2 or 3 weeks without your beloved system. It's inspired me to be ontop of the warranty for the PS3 whenever I get it.

Thanks for the writeup, ChrisBaleBatman. My biggest reservation about 360 is RROD, and I guess I have no choice but to pony up $30 or whatever to get the warranty. It adds up to the cost and it's not something I'm happy about.

The Microsoft Warranty is free, for 3 years, covering the RROD. A store warranty is different, but you are covered for 3 years by Microsoft regardless. You can extend it, but I think if your 360 has lasted 3 years with no problem, it will probably keep on going.

Oh, and it might be worth mentioning some of the rumors going around lately.

As we all know....or probably not, but still...the Xbox 360 managed to really lower it's price to a pretty impressive scale. Supposedly, it's upped it's sales and kicked PS3 ass lately in sales because of it.

That's probably a very good thing for anyone like me, who wants to buy a PS3. I cannot even begin to tell you how badly I want to play Metal Gear Solid 4.

So, along with Microsoft's lowering it's price...and the economy imploding and defining the doom of civilzation as we know it...it might mean that Sony could further lower the price on the system.

I've heard that the economy is really kicking businesses down, and that the Asian economy is currently suffering a great deal because the American economy is suffering. Alot of the major companies, or so I've heard, like Toyota and Nissan...and Nintendo and Sony rely pretty heavily on America to buy it's products. Since most people are freaking out right now, and not buying ****...everyone is freaking out.

So, apparently alot of analysts are suggesting/predicting that Sony will NEED to lower it's price even lower if it wants to do well this Christmas admist the current recession and just how competitive Nintendo and Microsoft are.

So...I'm hoping that I can get the PS3 this christmas hopefully with a great Christmas bundle...or a great price.

I do have a few questions about the PS3, though. I've heard about the different versions of the PS3 that's out there. Versions that have no backwards compatability and less storage space.

With the lower storage sapce...are there memory cards to buy? I mean, if I'm running out of space....how do I take care of that problem?

You don't really need to worry though, Microsoft covers the cost of repairs and shipping. Yeah, it'll suck that you'll be without your system for 2-3 weeks, but you don't have to shell out any money for it.

Also, for everyone who says PS3's better because it has more power, power doesn't mean anything if the developers don't utilize it and in most cases developers won't utilize PS3's extra power for mulitplatform games.

Finally, online, X-Box Live costs $3.85/month when you get home at night, put your change in a jar or cup or something, I guarantee by the end of the month you'll have more than $3.85. Another little thing, a friend of mine downloaded the Bioshock demo last week on his PS3, after one hour it was only at 40% downloaded, I've never waited more than 20 minutes for a download to complete on X-Box.

Yeah, this is a pro X-Box post, but just thought I'd put in my two cents. In the end it's really about the games more than anything else and for my money the games on 360 kick the PS3's ass.

Thanks for the clarification. If Microsoft's warranty covers repair and shipping, then I guess I don't need to get another one from the store. Still, I don't I'll never experience RROD.

Yea, dont purchase another warranty from the store. That 3 year warranty the system comes with will do you just fine. Like Geo said, if ur system makes it 3 yrs w/out the RRoD, then chances are ur golden.

Also, if all your buddies are planning on getting the 360, then itd be tough to go the opposite direction. I mean iv had some GREAT times on games like CoD4 and GTA IV with my friends. Playing with a group of friends is tough to beat.

Just wanted to mention about the Bioshock demo taking an hour, it must be your friends connection speed. I've never had anything on the PSN take over 20 mins. The Bioshock demo was downloading in the background and it couldn't have taken more than 3-5 mins for me, and that was while I was surfing the net.
