The Amazing Spider-Man 2 What Did You Not Like?(Spoilers!!!)

So many things bugged me:

1. Spiderman's power level. Look, watched the movie again and verified that when Spidey was going up against Aleskei at the beginning he was in a regular tow truck, towing the armored car. Spidey could punch through a windsheild????? Sorry, that was lame, and a moment later he was catching a cop car.

2. Mad Dillon was terrible. Beyond cliche', with the whole high waters, greasy hair and glasses. The illusions of ganduer was a bit over the top. Sorry, but this was very annoying for the first half of the movie "Wait, she remembered my name."... argh!

3. The spiderweb's strength. Aleskei was able to just rum by and grab the container of plutonium, but Gwen later had to use her keys to cut her hand free and it was strong enough to hold a car flying through the air.

4. Waste of some very good actors. So far they have wasted Chris Cooper, Colm Feore, and Marton Csokas. Don't get me wrong, what Cooper and Feore did with their characters was good, but each could have been used much better. And Csokas' character deserves it's own rant...

5. Dr. Kafka! Pretty much the worst character in the movie (Max Dillon was a close second). Were they trying to make him androngenous since Kafka is supposed to be female, or did they not realize that we'd see the lipstick? Also, if and when they do bring in a Doc Ock, if it's per the comic then the two characters will be too alike. I get having the whole crazy scientist type thing, but they could have just made Kafka Doc Ock, some Engneer at Oscorp, or something like that, and it'd be good. Kafka was an epic fail and now Csokas has been wasted.

6. Where did Electro get the high tech outfit from? It just appeared all of a sudden with no explanation. And it has the ability to just dissipate into energy?

7. Why make Aunt May become a nurse? And why would she be at a hospital? She'd have to go to school for a while first, and there would be no hiding that from Peter. And why hide that from him anyway?

8. Harry's desease seemed to progress much faster than Narman's. We saw a video of Norman in his 40's and the desease had progressed less than Harry's had. Yes, maybe Norman had used some of the research to lesson the effects, but why couldn't Harry have done that. I know the whole "I need your blood" thing was needed for the story, but they could have handled it better.

9. Although Felicia's character was good, I would have liked to see some hint at who she will hopefully be. Could have simply been her doing some acrobatic move to get away from something, or something of that nature.

10. Why do the police let the civilians hang around so close to these super-powered villains. Here comes this huge mechanoid Rhino thing and we let the civilians stand 20 feet away? Plus, wouldn't most parents grab their kids and run away from the danger.

11. And that leads to that shot of the kid in the spidey costume "standing up to the Rhino". S... T... U... P... I... D... ! All I was thinking was, it's the mother's fault for staying there with her kid to watch the huge Rhino-Mech fight the cops. Bullets flying and she just stands there with her son? Wouldn't most parents run the other way, dragging their kids, as fast as possible?

12. The timeline as far as seasons. We start ok with June and graduation, but after the break-up the timeline goes all wacky, as far as the seasons. In fact, what year/month did Gwen die? I think it was a whole year later, in maybe late summer, but I don't know for sure.

13. Which would mean that Peter has been in college for a whole year, yet we never see anything about that important part of his life, and only get one small mention about 'I'm in college now'.

14. Peter's whole detective web to figure out the deal with his dad. Why? This was so not needed and was a waste of time. Yes, I get the irony of him using a 'detective web' to figure things out, but it led nowhere. There were others ways to show us his 'obsession' on figuring that out. It really served no purpose, other than Aunt May finding it, so he could confront her, but he could have just gone and confronted her without all that.

15. Smythe never came across like a head honcho at Oscorp. Yes, he bullied Max and made him stay late on his Birthday, but he just came across like some middle manager.

16. Not showing us what was in the other 3 or more cells down in Special Projects. Yes, we saw the spider venom and Doc Ock's arms, Vulture's wings and the Goblin armor/glider; but why not show the rest? If you're willing to show some, just go all of the way...

17. The Gentleman. He seems so not needed. It could have been Smythe, or Otto Octavius or others to bring the 6 together. Makes me think that Massee was supposed to be Norman, when they filmed TASM1, and they since changed their mind.

18. So much shown to us in previews never made it into the movie. The whole "Peter, Oscorp has been tracking you" was never used?

19. One little speech from Aunt May about packing up Uncle Ben's stuff was enough to get him to put the costume back on. Really?

20. Captain Stacy induced by guilt. Yes, it got the point across, but is SPidey really losing his mind here? How about maybe a nightmare sequence to drive the point across instead.

21. The fact that Peter hasn't seen Harry since he was 11, yet they are "best friends". Sorry, that makes no sense!!!

22. The airplanes! First, the odds that two planed are on a collision course in the big open sky, and the fact that the moment they would have any issues with communications or electronics they would get altitude, bothered me. Did we really need to have the 5 minute countdown of the planes crashing to make that scene intense? Nope. It could have simply been if they don't stop him quickly he'll be too powerful to stop, or something like that.

23. Oh, and planes (and ships) are taught to open to the right, not the left.

24. How come every time Spidey gets into a fight after the break-up it leads to him being covered in something yucky? Didn't he have a fish at one point???

25. Back to that kid wearing the Spidey costume. When Spidey took the time to fist bump I was thinking, 'her Rhino, right now is when I would be shooting'. And don't tell me that the Rhino wouldn't want to hurt a kid.

26. So really, Peter Parker had a difficult time telling Gwen that he loves her. Really?

27. Keeping the mask on after changing into his graduation robes. Yes, chuckle, but stupid!

28. The terrible music used whenever Maxx Dillon was on screen to help us realize he's a ****. Really?

29. Why did Gwen have to be the one to break-up with Peter? Was it that important?

30. When the cop called for back-up in Time's Square like 10 cop cars showed up, at the exact same moment, and surrounded Electro? Boy, that timing was convienient.

31. Harry Osborn is allowed to just walk right up to the Ravencroft security dudes, grab their stun guns and take them out? Really?

Yet, in all, the movie was pretty good. No where near the travesty that was Spiderman 3!!! In general they got Gwen's death right, and I even liked how at one point, when Peter said "you're ok", it seemed that she was going to wake, but the crack when she hit was shocking. I also liked the blood from the nose to try to drive home the point of she's not waking up from this. Spidey's acrobatics was the best of any Spidey movie and Garfield is a master at the joking nature that Spiderman is known for. Yes, they made some minor and some major mistakes. Was it "amazing", no, but still better than Spiderman 3!

Personally I think both ASM1 and ASM2 suffer from the same problems:

1) Poorly thought-out and underdeveloped villians.

1a) Curt/Lizard had a crappy character design, and weak motivation for doing what he did, causing me to not be sympathetic to his situation. Just all around under developed.

1b) Electro, personality wise, felt like a cartoon character that didn't mesh well with the other more realistic characters in the movie, plus he wasn't important to the story in any meaningful way. Lack of believable motivation for his villainy was a key reason I hated his character. He could have been cut from this movie and replaced with Goblin as the sole villian and I wouldn't have missed him.

1c) Harry Osborn should have gotten more screen time to develop his friendship with peter more and make me care about him more. IMO Harry should have been incorporated into the first movie to make their friendship believable, but I won't hold that against the movie. Harry's transformation into the green goblin felt rushed because he went from rich kid who just got back from boarding school to knowing how to operate goblin tech in the blink of an eye when the plot needed him to. Overall he felt shoe horned in at the end of the movie, when he could have been built up better if unnessacary subplots like the parents secret, and the

1d) Paul Giamatti was a bad Rhino. Like Electro, he came off like a silly cartoon character. While I liked the ending of the movie with him and Spidey, they should have should have a shown little bit of their fight at the least. Sony had posters, and commercials featuring this guy, at least give him a full fight sequence even if it's a short one at the end of the movie, I was pissed off with this one.

2) This is more so a complaint of ASM2, than ASM1, but the parents storyline wasn't all that interesting to follow and had a weak payoff. Also the movies could have had less subplots in general so as to not feel all over the place. Also The peter/gwen romance, while good in general, didn't need waste time with peter breaking up with her in the begining only to get back together with her a few scenes later, since he broke up with her at the end of the first movie, only to get back together before the credits rolled.

3)Slower pacing and lack of action left me feeling bored at points midway through. The action that was there are not thrilling or unique that I would want to see the movies again, at least to re watch those specific scenes. Neither of the new movies have action sequences in them that compare to many of the action sequences of the first trilogy IMO, or even CAP 2 which had a smaller budget.

I don't have the energy to write a long post of all the things I didn't like so I'll come here whenever I think of something. For now I'll say that what I disliked about the movie the most, what I actually hated was everything between Harry and Peter. This characters don't seem like they even like eachother, the actors don't have chemistry and the first scene they have togethere is AWFUL! The forced "friendship" really pissed me off, to me it just felt like the Marc Webb said "lets just put them together making super silly jokes and people will buy their friendship" ugh Im angry just thinking about it.

I don't think I disliked anything else as much, I was very indifferent towards the movie which is sort of the problem but at least I didn't really hate it lol

Didn't like max Dillion as a character. I would've perferred he not be some overly cliche nerd and have him be a hard working blue collar man who happens to be a genius as far as electricity goes but is very lonely and schizophrenic. His motivation Should've been against oscorp for stealing his plans and not giving him credit.

also didnt like all of the time references and capt. Stacy showing up everywhere, I think a dream sequence would've been fine for that.

And I would've ended the movie with harry getting the suit and kidnapping gwen after they defeated electro. Then kill gwen off at the beginning of sm3 so the shock of her death can be felt throughout the length of the movie. It would also give more fuel to the fire as far as the black suit goes.

I don't think the Max/Electro cheese was that bad.Particularly after he was Electro.By comparison,The Riddler in BF got more and more over the top until it looked like Sunday night in the Elton John residence circa 1980 by the end.

I too would like to show up in the "What did you not like thread" and say Electro was not as bad as the riddler in Batman Returns.

Not as cheesy. Not as cliché'. Not as over the top.
Also didn't look that much like Dr Manhatten.

What did I not like. Hmmm. Well, I expected this movie to really suck after reading the reviews. I've been completely in love with Captain America: Winter Soldier for the past few weeks, so I was already preparing myself for disappointment. How could anything be better than that? I turned into a Chris Evans fan overnight! However, I ended up liking this film a lot more than I thought I would.

I believe that a huge part of that is because I saw the movie in a brand new IMAX theater. And I mean brand new. Like it opened in February. I was sitting in the best seat in the theater (by my standards). This movie looked and felt so awesome in that theater that I was completely willing to forgive all the lameness. And there was A LOT of lameness, which I was only able to objectively process the next day. I agree with many of the complaints posted here. If I watched this movie on my t.v. right now I'd probably think it was a hot mess. But that wasn't my experience.

First, I will admit that I'm not a comic book reader. I'm into comic book movies, but my first one was Superman: The Movie, when it first came out, so I've been into them for a while. I really struggle with comic book villains that are, in my opinion, over the top and cheesy: Green Goblin, Doc Oc, and anything that looks as though it belongs in a Superfriends cartoon (pauses and waits to be pelted with rotten vegetables). I like realistic, gritty, believable villains. Cackling, ugly, crazy freaks shouting, "I'll get you, and your little dog, too!" just don't do it for me. So, I was expecting the worst here, given that I had to deal with both Electro and Harry Green Goblin. Given that, Electro really wasn't that bad. I actually liked the effects and the music. It worked for me because it was visually amazing.

I forgave Electro's shortcomings because I could feel him through the floor and into my bones. He was visually stunning. The theater felt like it was shaking at certain points. I felt like I was IN it when Spiderman was moving around the screen, and he was so red and so blue it took my breath away. The 3D effects actually made me think of Avatar and Gravity. That's how good it was in this theater.

My fourteen-year-old son said it was one of the best movies he's ever seen (and he has seen and loved far better films than this). I started to gently point out the horrendous plot holes, the smarmy moments, the things that made absolutely no sense that have been explained in this thread. He became very upset with me, and I realized he had had an intense emotional experience, and I had too. I really didn't care about all that stuff, because it was such an amazing auditory and visual experience. I thought Gwen's death was very powerful and visually memorable, though I had some connection to it because I had read about her history online a few years ago.

Okay, there is one thing that I really couldn't ignore. (Ducks and runs for cover.) Harry's comb-over. Or is it a front-over? What was up with that? Harry was a 20-year-old bald man who was clearly trying to cover it with a twelve-year-old's haircut that was combed forward from the very back of his head. I couldn't stop staring at his forehead peeking through. It took me out of the movie more than anything else. Did anyone else not notice this? Men his age are not that bald, even if they have male pattern baldness. It kept reminding me that he was an actor in his late twenties playing a part.

It's the contemporary young rich damaged emotional dude look, I guess. Haha.

That's a cool write up though, when I got to see the movie in 3D I thought the same thing. It actually is pretty amazing visually, as far as Spider-Man's scenes are concerned. I really wanted to see this in IMAX theatre, but wasn't able to it's a long drive to the nearest. The entire opening Spider-Man shots and ensuing tow truck chase were just great to look at. My personal favorite sequence in 3D would probably have to be where Spider-Man chasing Electro to the power plant, after Electro talks to him on the side of the building. The graveyard scene was well done too, each headstone showing depth. Comic books are foremost a visual medium, and plenty of books are still worth the price of admission solely on the artist. I think that was one of Webb's goals for the film and he accomplished that definitively.

Far as what I did not like; I am still having trouble piecing together Richard Parker's experiments. They talk about the spiders, the potential they showed, say that Oscorp destroyed them all, but show Richard killing them in the beginning, say they destroyed them to restore investor confidence which is what they said about Connors work. And they are human hybrids made with Parker DNA.

So... if they destroyed them all, I'm guessing that the spiders used in ASM1 that Peter gets bitten by are a deviated genetic lineage from Richard's? A bite by any of them wouldn't do anything to anybody, but since Peter has the same DNA and is healthy, it gives him his powers. They said they extracted the venom to store it, so Richard must not have been able to destroy them all before he fled. Was it the fabricated claims of the Parker's disappearance, that they intended to sell the research, the cause for the spiders destruction to appease investors? I've had to ponder what exactly occurred there and my 3 viewings haven't really helped explain it all.

My main thing besides the terrible writing is the predestiny crap. Only Peter could have become Spider-Man and that's a load of horse ****. Oh also, Ben Parker takes a back seat to Richard in this series. That is shameful.

the Kid in the spidey costume at the end was beyong stupid so nobody
stopped him and Rhino lets spiderman just sit there to talk to him :whatever:

and I too would like to know how Electro got his black suit

The fact was Rhino had no intent or interest in hurting bystanders---he proved that in the opening sequence. So of course he let Spider-Man get the boy to safety when he could have blown Spider-Man away while he was chatting with the kid.

I think that the thing that put me off the most is how Peter seems not to give a **** about Uncle Ben in this film. Instead, he's like "I don't care, what about my dad".

I do find the lack of Ben-related emotions rather unsettling. Also, the more I think about it, Gwen's death should have been left until ASM3.

i don't think so. With Spider-Man 3 and 4 coming down the pipeline, I imagine the series could basically be two pairs of films. With Gwen and Post Gwen.

Electro was lame. Shame as his powers looked great and you have Jamie Foxx playing him. Wasted. And generally there were too many scenes that I just didn't like and wouldn't want to rewatch. I'd still watch this film again (not in the cinema) fastforwarding through the crap as I really loved all the Spidey bits, he was better than ever. But the film as whole was not very well organised to me. Just a shame as they could really have built on the 1st film here and set up the future of the franchise with all those announced films. I think it will be difficult now.

Edit; Liked Gwen too, and think that event could have waited for another film.

Here's a stupid one, but one that bothered me...

The fact that the Rhino armor had a Russian symbol on it.

In seeing that prior to the movie it seemed to logically suggest that the armor had nothing to do with Oscorp, and I kind of liked that. I don't want every single villain to come off of the Oscorp assembly line.

It also kind of made sense that Aleskei was trying to get some sort of energy cell, in the whole initial chase scene, in order to power his mech.

But no, the "plutonium" had nothing to do with nothing and the mech was just one more thing sitting around in one of the special projects cells.

How convienient that a mob guy with rhinos on his underwear just happens to be selected by The Gentleman to use mechanized armor that looks like a Rhino?!!

If the armor was Aleskei's, at least his obvious "infatuation" with rhinos would be the logical reason for the look of the armor.

Well in the film, they mention Norman was conspiring with foreign nations to develop weapons. It is plausible then that the Rhino suit could be the result of one of those collaborations.

I know it has been mentioned but Harry learning how to use the glider in seconds really bothered my he really was shoe horned just to
kill gwen

Yeah the destiny thing is just infuriating beyond words. The people who wrote that idea into this version do not get the appeal of Spider-Man. At all.

Only Peter could become Spider-Man, but he wasn't predestined to become Spider-Man. It was still an accident.

-Max Dillon. His motivation was very weak and he was too cartoony pre-Electro. Once he became Electro, he was cool.
-Harry becoming the Goblin was one of the worst cases of rushing a villain that I've ever seen.
-Too many characters/subplots.
-Some really bad dialogue.
-Why does Harry feel like he has to do all of this now? He acts like he only has days/weeks to live, but Norman kept himself alive for DECADES with the same condition. That wasn't explained well at all.
-How the Hell did he get so good at using the GG equipment so quickly? He's never used it before, and suddenly he can go toe to toe with Spider-Man.
-Jarring tonal shifts. You go from ridiculous/stupid levels of cartoony stuff to really dark stuff. Pick a tone and stick with it.
-Norman was wasted in this movie, as was Chris Cooper.
-Gwen's actual death scene was done really well, as was the aftermath. However, the buildup to it was poor and it felt very tacked on. They should have pushed it back to TASM 3.
- Quite honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of the Rhino ending. It struck me as a really tacked-on "we cannot ever have a sad ending" type of thing. I would have ended the movie with Peter visiting Gwen's grave.

I think that the thing that put me off the most is how Peter seems not to give a **** about Uncle Ben in this film. Instead, he's like "I don't care, what about my dad".

yup, that bothers me too, BEN was his real father, he raised you, it evens bother me that at the aftermath when he lis listening to Gwen speech they show a picture od him with his mom and dad instead of his Uncle and Aunt, it would be a nice touch that he replaces that picture with one where he is with Aunt May and Uncle Ben, i mean he visited Gwen more than the man he raised him did

I think that the thing that put me off the most is how Peter seems not to give a **** about Uncle Ben in this film. Instead, he's like "I don't care, what about my dad".
Hahahaha.

May: Ben would have loved to have been here!

Peter: Nah **** him. My parents though! Now that would've been dope!

I'm exaggerating of course...:oldrazz:

I think that they put in Alister Smythe and Felicia Hardy simply just as easter eggs. They hardly do anything in the movie, so they could have gave them completely original names and it wouldn't have made a difference. Smythe didn't seem like the type of guy that would be able to invent robots to hunt down spider-man.
