Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. What didn't you like?

What gives you that idea? Do you only recognize River Tam as Whedon's only highly irritating, incredibly special female character, while ignoring early-seasons Buffy, Dawn (who filled the void once Buffy became tolerable), and Cordelia on Angel (which I haven't quite seen a lot of, just the first two seasons, but that's enough to get a feel for where that was heading)?
I don't find River annoying at all, but she was the only female Whedon character that I considered to be "pivotal to the point". I guess Dawn was too, but she was supposed to be annoying.

Frankly, I think you're making a connection that just doesn't exist. The characters you listed don't have the same personalities or archetype and all the other main characters are special in someway too. Those just happen to be the ones that annoy you.

I would have liked to have seen this show debut new SHIELD Agents to MCU like Clay Quartermaine, GW Bridge, Jessica Drew or Abigail Brand.

Not to sound whiney... But THIS is more in the wheelhouse of what I was expecting from the show. Known to fans, badass SHIELD agents doing badass things. Not annoying rag tag band of misfits show #10759883. If nothing else you would think Whedon would use the show to introduce Agent Brand to the world of live action and give us a cool slow reveal of SWORD over the course of a season or something.

I never found any of those characters to be highly irritating. I mean, Dawn's storyline/character arc kind of treaded water and kept hitting the same note of teen angst for a good stretch in season six, but I thought she was fine in seasons five and seven. And I never had that feeling about any of those other characters.

I echo a few of the sentiments already on here, but I chalk it up to the actors and writers finding a groove. Any show that has a "monster of the week" approach is bound to suffer from the initial first season "we need to give you the same exposition every episode until we find a regular audience" woes. I thought that Seasons 2-5 of Supernatural were really strong, fun television... but I had to endure Season 1 to get there.

My biggest complaint? The music in the show is gawdawful. I know that they're trying for "orchestral epic", but it's really, really generic and detracts from the cinematic feel that the direction is aiming for. I would gladly take generic techno or rock over an uninspired orchestra.

I think Grant Ward needs to step and be the badass of the team...kinda Logan like.

the problem with him stepping up to be the bad ass is that is takes away from May's badassness.

My complaint with the team is that there is a lot of overlap with jobs. May being on the team sort of negates Ward. She even took over Wards questioning of Coulson. It's like having Wolverine and Wildchild on the same team...eventually Wildchild is going to be redundant.
To give them a different job I would have made Ward the expert in espionage...think Face from A-team.
Fitz and Simmons also seam redundant. What are there areas of expertise? I would make one a medical doctor and the other the tech scientist. So now they have clear cut jobs without being redundant.
Skye seems to be growing into Ward Jr and I think this is a mistake. They should use her skills as a computer expert and hacker instead of making her a field agent.

That's kind of what they are, already. Note who was the one to do the surgery. There just haven't been quite as many biological needs, versus hard tech needs, as of yet.

if that was the case then I take that back. I know one did the surgery but I recall her saying this wasn't her expertise...I could be wrong

I did a little survey at work yesterday of people who I know watch the show and I get mostly the same response: why is there a show about superheroes but they don't have any superheroes on it? I've already stated my opinion and I do feel it has gotten better but I'm actually kind of shocked its ratings kind of stayed in the 7 M range. I think Marvel's name has really helped this show stay afloat.

The actual answer is twofold.
Licensing issues and availabilty of actors .

1st thing the first five minutes of the pilot is how the show should be very serious, with decent and well place joke every once in awhile. Once Ward got to Shield headquarters, the dialogue was way too much comedy.

2 pick a character for comic relief and make everybody else serious, and cut down on the comical dialougue. if Fitz or Simmons are there for comic relief then Skye should be a
more serious character

three character differentiation like others have said alot overlap, between May and Ward and also fitz simmons.

more people with powers, and use some d list people from the comics Gravitron is a good start.
Im starting to see trend Marvel uses comedy to draw in the general audience and D.C uses romantic melodrama

It seems like D.C has the right idea or the right execution. I cant wait to see the new Marvel shows on Netflix or cable and see what they are like when they dont have to cater to such a large audience.

Well DC's shows have been on the WB which is a network that is dedicated to teen/YA angst and romance. I'd like to see what Gotham and Constantine will be like.

What network will air Gotham?

Another thing that bothers me about the show is that things happen in the show because the script calls for it but not because it's a natural progression of the show. Skye betrays the team but is allowed to stick around because she's looking for her parents.
Let's put this in a real world scenario:
After the Seals infiltrate Bin Laden's compound and kill him. They discover a young woman who's good with computers and allows her to tags along on missions. After a few missions they discover this woman has been leaking secrets to targets. See how stupid that sounds?
