This last episode was it for me. I know Skye is a hotty and all but Bennet is the most mediocre actress in a show chock full of mediocre actors (Ming-Na and Gregg excepted). But more importantly the character of Skye and all the story surrounding her just rubs me the wrong way, and in terms of continuing storylines THAT has been the focus. We get a little bit of progress of the "centepide" conspiracy and we're just twisting in the wind after 5 episodes about what's up with Coulson.
It's not JUST that focus on Skye has meant less time for Phil, it's also that the character is an idiot, but we are supposed to believe she's resilient and smart, and she clearly isn't. A huge pet peeve of mine is when writers on a show/movie keep telling me how smart a character is, then showing me that said character doesn't have the sense God gave the average dog. An example would be the first JURASSIC PARK sequel. We are told how J. Moore's character is this experienced scientist who is an expert on predatory animals, having years of field time with wild animals. Further more another scientist tells us at one point that T. Rex have a sense of smell superior to anything on Earth. Moore gets the blood of a T.Rex hatchling on her. This in fact is brought to her attention. "Hey, you're bleeding" "Oh, no biggie. It's baby T. Rex blood. Lets go trapsing through Raptor territory now. I'm not even going to take this blood covered shirt off." W... T... to the F?
Well on AGENTS we have Skye not bothering in the least it would seem to learn the differrence between the saftey and the ammo release on a sidearm AFTER already being in multiple life threatening situations. Then this last episode we see that Skye, after already warning her "lover" that he's being pursued by SHIELD makes the brilliant call to meet him at his apartment, and knowing that the manhunt is still going for said lover thinks, "Now is totally the right time for me to have some afternoon delight with my wanted by the super spy organization man." She's an idiot. Yet the writers think I as a viewer will forgive her idiocy because she's a nubile young woman willing to be the show's designated T&A. Sorry. I just refuse to subject myself to that level of insult to my intelligence on a weekly basis, especially since the one thing I do care about, Coulson's resurrection, is always being put on the back burner. For those who say it's only 5 episodes in I will reference something Joss Whedon himself said on the commentary of an episode of FIREFLY. Whedon made the point that the first five episodes or so of a show was what really should be considered "the pilot". If a show has not caught you by then, if the set up and characters don't appeal to you in some way by then he said, then they most likely never will for the viewer. I agree. It's been five episodes. I gave it a chance. Clearly it's not for me. What I am dreading is that this was a MARVEL show with heavy input from Joss. My Zod, what sort of offerings will Loeb and Marvel be giving us on tv WITHOUT Joss' input?
I know this all sounds harsh but it's my honest take. If you enjoy the show for what it is, more power to you. I just can't keep watching something that both disappoints and annoys me each week.
