What does it mean to be black?

So blacks used that term for themselfs?I would have never guessed that,i thought it would have been something branded onto them by other peoples.

Point is...can't we all just be American and leave it at that?

America should have been more multicultural..but for over 200 years America as been mainly a white state of British,German and Irish decent. If you hear a white person says they are "American" and refuse to say anymore, you can guess they are one of those groups.

Why?Because Britain sent people to the colonies, then the Germans came in the mid 1800's and the Irish in the late 1800's.This is why whites are seen as true Americans, and blacks African-American.Notice African is always first when people talk about them.

Some think that black is some sort of derogatory comment. I never understood why (especially when other black people think it's racist for anyone who isn't black to call them that).

Technically, whites are not true Americans, at all. This land belonged to the Native Americans, who were technically, for all we know, Asians who passed the Bering land bridge to populate the Americas.

Once we as African Americans change our mentality then we can and will achieve all of the things mentioned and more.

This sounds all positive and all, but reality is not as black and white as u make it seem. Just from being black we are discriminated against regardless of what we've done in our past. It's just the way this culture is. Until minorities become more dominant in the media (where we all always being killed and having our stories blown out of proportion) and become more dominant at the top of organizations we will always be unfairly discriminated against.

Anyone else get just  reading his posts? Cause I gotta admit he's so far OFF I'm incapable of constructing even a reading list to try to clear up even a few of his misconceptions...

He does live in Brazil, I think, if that helps you any. :o

I understand what you are saying but we cannot wait around for the system to be fair before we begin asserting ourselves. Blacks have to engage the system to expedite this change. Also blacks who are immigrants from other lands while experiencing racism and discrimination still are more economically and educationally successful than African-Americans as a whole.

Why? We have a different mentality obtained through our history in America through slavery and Jim Crow laws than blacks from different countries that have come to America as they come here for economic gain.

For them America is the land of opportunity, for us, we perceive it as the land of injustice. As long as we think as ourselves as victims, we will always be on our backs collectively waiting for someone to come save us.

^^^100 percent agree....get off your butt, stop complaining, and stop thinking about what you deserve and start thinking about what you should be working for

I can't believe african americans actully like chitterlings, Its pig intestines. It goes back to when the slaves where given the parts of animals the slave owners didn't want to eat.
I used to like it when I was younger, But I notice as I get older, there are some things that I just can't eat. If... (Sigh) If it feels funny in my mouth, mushy like, I most likely won't eat it. And the only time I ever put Hotsauce on my chicken was when I was younger, and I refused to eat my mother's chicken without flavor.(I used to hate most of her cooking)

Indeed.Other people like middle eastern people or hispanics could have dark skin, but no..they are branded black. There can be more to it.

My overseas friend is half native american.Send me a PM about the comment about the Natives being Asian, could they be Russian also?

Even if you didn't look "black" growing up, you were sometimes singled out or they would say you're not black. Like being a lighter shade, etc. Hell, I've had freckles since I was younger, inherited from my white granny, and people still ask "are you biracial? Are you part latin? What are you?" I stood out amongst the rest of the darker homeboys.

What are you terry?I hear that some who are half black, sometimes hide or deny the fact that they are black.Simply because their skin color is lighter than the token tan..or..black.Like someone could have a black mother, and a white father. The child could be fairly white, and could be ashamed of the black..so they could say they are all white.Because of the skin issue.

To answer the thread title...

Being black means you will go to every one of Tyler Perry's movies on opening weekend, regardless of whether you like the man or not.

has anyone heard of blacknificent? he is by far the quintessential black man that is going to ruin everything you are working for. by far. just read this interview, and watch this youtube video. i understand probably nobody will check it out, but this guy deserves death. his thesis statement is basically "we need to exterminate white people" period. oh and did i mention he said this in a speech on CSPAN. please, read, and enjoy. and you can check out his web site for books, i love his forums too.

It's 2007 people, and racism is on the way out.

Raybia, I commend you for your comments, but I'm also going to say a few things you may find to be offensive, even if they are true.

First, let's not forget that it was the idealism and compassion you speak of that prompted WHITE people to free the slaves.

Second, despite how terrible slavery was, it resulted in the pollination of America with African immigrants. Were it not for slavery, this would be a much more WHITE country, and a much worse country because of it.

Finally, I could give a crap less what color anyone's skin is. I think most Americans feel that way. While African Americans should feel just as empowered as any other race to pick themselves up and succeed, it should not be at the expense of others under any circumstance. Maybe if more African Americans would listen more carefully to the wisdom of Bill Cosby, things might improve.

As to an African American dating my daughter, I have no issues with it as long as he is a good man who cares about people - ALL people - and he's trying to improve his life.

There is only one race - the human race. All sub-categories describing the human race are shallow attempts at either a) seeking attention or b) seeking superiority. In either case, it's shameful and should be dutifully ignored and/or punished.

Indeed.Other people like middle eastern people or hispanics could have dark skin, but no..they are branded black. There can be more to it.

95% of the time, I can distinctly tell Blacks from Middle Eastern/Arabs, and Latinos/Hispanics. They would only be branded Black because someone can't tell the distinction, or that certain person may actually look like a Black guy. I doubt anybody would call another minority who isn't Black a Black person to try to insult them.

My overseas friend is half native american.Send me a PM about the comment about the Natives being Asian, could they be Russian also?

The Native Americans were some sort of Asian, and I mean this in terms of continent, not the modern definition of Asian, who are mostly (incorrectly) known as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, (etc.). Technically, the term Asian is wrong, for it references the continent, not a race of people. Technically, Russians are Asians, even though all Russians are white people. This is why I prefer the term Oriental. Today, the peoples that I listed above are commonly and incorrectly known as Asian.

You could probably guess that, judging by looks, the Native Americans might have been some early predecessor to modern Indians and other Middle Eastern/Arabic peoples. They might have been possibly mixed with the predecessors of modern Oriental people, as well. All that we know for sure is that the modern Latino/Hispanic population are descendants of those same Native Americans that came and populated the Americas. Funny how that works out, eh? It's funny how we all came from the same place, yet have so many different languages, races, cultures, etc.

Also, Native Americans couldn't have been Russian, for Russia did not exist back and the every day Russians are white people.

Brazil?Don't insult me.I live in Europe.

I always thought you lived in Brazil.

Are you ready for the revolution?

I'm ready for a revolution but not the kind you are probably referring to.

By the way revolution in latin means "a turn around".

Malcolm X said that a revolution is overthrowing the system and the system that is in place now is oppressing and exploiting not only blacks but the majority of Americans.

being black means you were descended from African lineage and have a higher amount of melanin in your skin than white people due to climate affecting evolution...that's all...you're not special :o

There are more white people posting in here than there are black...I'm confused with the thread title now.
