This secret second team was destroyed and this eventually led to the deadly corruption of its powerful leader, Vulcan. But what if this second team HAD survived? Today, Vulcan is a celebrity hero who leads a new team of X-Men. But when Krakoa is found drifting in space, it holds a terrible secret that threatens the fate of this new generation of mutants.

Looks verrrrrry pretty, not sure if there's much of a story in it or how they handle it but the art from some of these what if...'s so far has been gorgeous!

Its an interesting story, and I liked Deadly Genesis, but these new crop of What if's are just, well meh.

the story yes but the art is very nice!

Deadly Genesis was a best seller?! First I've heard of it. The pencil art looks WAY better than in inks, the story is kinda like what Darthphere said: meh. What If?! has always been to me about older events. This just feels like an attempt at giving Deadly Genesis more of spotlight and add it to what's happening in Uncanny so that people will go back and buy the mini. But what do I know? It was a best seller so I'm talking out my...:(

seriously though, you have to admit the concept of scott as a melancholic beatnik artist with serious 5 oclock shadow is a cracking concept :D

Does 'cracking concept' mean thought up by someone doing crack? Then, yes, I agree.

looks interesting. Sucks that even here Jean Grey remains dead

as opposed to in regular continuity where she never comes back from the dead :o

I agree. It feels to me to be too soon to be retelling these stories.

Since I hate retcons in general and tend to reject them Vulcan and the others never existed and still don't. This team is probably the worst idea Marvel has ever had so I deny its reality. Its nothing more than a demented nightmare inflicted upon reality by someone with Mastermindlike powers.

I usually don't like retcons either and as a whole I don't like this one but I do really like the characters Brubaker created in Deadly Genesis and I'm really liking his run on Uncanny so far. Darwin is really cool.

Finally someone else who see's this, darwin has the potential to become the most powerful mutant in the universe, to be honest I think he's gonna be the one to stop vulcan. The guy can evolve in a matter of seconds to meet any environmental requirement. Give the man a cookie :woot:

Yep. I hope Darwin becomes a full member of one of the teams after this arc is over. One thing I have to say though, I wish the finding of Darwin was shown. I thought I had missed an issue since he was just suddenly there.

I'd quite like to see him turn eeeeeeeeeevil. He'd certainly be more of a threat than apocalypse :o

That spread of the massive X-team looks fantastic; if I don't get my wish of a huge panel in Whedon's Astonishing, that's a decent substitute.

Cyclops' new application of his powers is also pretty inventive, although it looks like Emma was right about Jean in AXM 14 ("She just wouldn't stop dying."). Most of all, I'm looking forward to seeing the alternate histories for Vulcan and (especially) Darwin (the best new X-Man introduced in a while).

Also, about the cover; poor Havok, that Silver Age helmet-thingy does you no favours.

He was inside Vulcan all this time and that was mainly what had allowed Vulcan to have all the extra powers he had. When the X-Men fought Vulcan, Darwin got his chance to get out. The Professor recruited him for the space faring team. Does any of those 2 instances mention something you missed? If you didn't read Deadly Genesis, then I" guess that's the reason why.

Alright. My piece. One, I hate how Prof X is continuously being portrayed as worse and worse. So I'm sure this will make it EVEN more so. Second, I disliked Deadly Genesis, as I felt it was kind of crap. Third, I tend to dislike retcon's in general. The fresher, the worse, as it will spark ANOTHER retcon down the road. And four? What If's have been "iffy" at best lately.

Aside from Ultimate X-men, the only place us Jean fans get to see her is in minis like this. We're scraping for crumbs these days when it comes to her

Let it go and move on, mayhaps? :woot:
