The Avengers What impressive humanoid CGI has ILM done since Hulk 2003?

Hulk's CGI still blows TIH's CGI away.

Vice versa on the character design.

Agreed. I've always maintained in any F/X heavy film, that generational leaps in technology are really the most important aspect, even beyond plot & acting.

The Terminator franchise is a good example. IMO, the first movie trumps all of them, but only the 2nd one was a big cultural event, and it was strictly because of the new F/X at the time.

Star Wars, at the beginning, utilized visuals to an extent people weren't accustomed to. Jurassic Park was only riveting because the Dinosaurs for the time were breathtaking. Avatar is basically a mashup (a very crude one at that) of two or three movies that handled that type of story better. But people had to see it, just for the visuals.

Lord of the Rings, besides the heavy book following, was incredible on a technical scale. The Matrix, just one shot of bullet-time changed the whole landscape of action movies for half the decade. Even something like Superman The Movie owes a lot of its success to the wizardry that made you believe a man can fly in 1978!

The Hulk is that type of character, and needs that type of technical leap to really be the huge success we think it should be, in turn, making the Avengers, and any possible sequel, must-see entertainment.

Agreed!!! But I also agree with DieSmiling.

The visuals brought people in and the quality of the films kept them coming back.

MARVEL STUDIOS needs to do the same with THE AVENGERS; when the average moviegoer sees the first trailer for this movie there has to be money shots with mindblowing VFX that make them say "I HAVE to see this movie". Hopefully one of those VFX shots will be a spectacularly real scene with THE HULK!!!!!

Jurassic Park is not just remembered for its special effects though. One of its most famous shots is just water rippling in a cup. It was suspense and it is awesome.

I thought WETA has really made a name for themselves for those amazing & life-like CGI creatures such as Gollum, King Kong, and the apes from the new POTA movie. ILM has always churn out quality work so I won't doubt them, but I hope The Avengers' Hulk will really wow the moviegoers like they did with the Transformers.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. The story, action, and musical score were all on point.

Sorry for my noobiness, but what the **** is WETA? I know ILM but I can't seem to put my finger on what company WETA stands for.

Weta doesn't stand for anything, they got their name from the real-life Weta insect.

WETA's POTA didn't look completely real though. I could still tell they are CGI. They're not as real as a guy in make up, who, although he might not be fully ape like, is still more lifelike and convincing than something that isn't there and doesn't have completely the right texture or subtle nuances.

Rise Of The Apes had pretty mediocre CGI, I'm sure it was a budget thing because their King Kong was leagues better.

King kong, avatar and spider-man 2 have some of the best cgi i have ever seen

Got to agree with this. JURASSIC PARK is one of my favourite movies of all time; helps that I've into palaeontology since I was a kid.

I think it's near essential that THE HULK wow moviegoers for THE AVENGERS to be a rampaging success.

I'm really curious to see how they pull off Hulk fighting a non cg opponent such as Thor.

Yeah, I hope ILM won't have any lapses like TIH's campus scene. But they have earned their reputation with stellar special effects in landmark movies, so tackling a movie like The Avengers shouldn't be a problem.

Lapses? I didn't notice any problems with the CGI in that scene.

More than likely Thor will also be CGI in some shots. I'm excited for new Hulk. I thought Rhythm and Hues, who did the CGI for TIH, was uneven as some said. Hulk looked good in the cave scene and certain shots in the campus fight. But my main problem was that, along with the Abomination, the head was too small for the body.

That is so strange because I've never heard of WETA before. Now they're bigger than ILM?

WETA did all the work for Lord of the Rings. They're kind of a big deal. They have many leather bound books and their apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Hulk in TIH was worst when he jumped down from that corridor in slow motion in that campus battle and landed on the ground and roared. He looked so fake in that scene.

Agreed. This shot is so bad. The problem is he's yelling and angry, yet his forehead and everything else is completely smooth like he's had botox.

The right side of his face looks very wrinkled and almost scarred. It looked really fake here, like as if it were from some video game or animated movie.

You guys are right, but the F/X were the foundation for which the whole premise was built on. If the dinosaurs hadn't looked like real, tangible, breathing creatures, there would have been no suspense, no good action, the whole thing falls apart instantly. The whole integrity of the movie is based on the illusion of the dinosaurs really being there, having a real presence.

Granted, they were more practical than just strictly cg creations, but the fact remains, for the Hulk, people have to buy into it for it to really work. So far, that hasn't been the case. I feel Hulk had far better cg integration with his environment than TIH did, but TIH was far more consistent throughout the whole movie. They need to nail it this time if they hope for any possible sequel to TIH going beyond the box office of the prior films.

It didn't help that was their big "marketing" shot either, everytime I saw a commercial I cringed at that part. I don't know what possessed them to use that, when the shot at the bottling factory or when he's holding Betty after the campus battle, looked so much better

Agreed, those two shots are just as good if not better than any shot from Hulk.

also the cave scene, which was also dark.
imo the best scene in Hulk was after his first hulk out and he walked towards his father in that dark hallway.
