Agreed. I've always maintained in any F/X heavy film, that generational leaps in technology are really the most important aspect, even beyond plot & acting.
The Terminator franchise is a good example. IMO, the first movie trumps all of them, but only the 2nd one was a big cultural event, and it was strictly because of the new F/X at the time.
Star Wars, at the beginning, utilized visuals to an extent people weren't accustomed to. Jurassic Park was only riveting because the Dinosaurs for the time were breathtaking. Avatar is basically a mashup (a very crude one at that) of two or three movies that handled that type of story better. But people had to see it, just for the visuals.
Lord of the Rings, besides the heavy book following, was incredible on a technical scale. The Matrix, just one shot of bullet-time changed the whole landscape of action movies for half the decade. Even something like Superman The Movie owes a lot of its success to the wizardry that made you believe a man can fly in 1978!
The Hulk is that type of character, and needs that type of technical leap to really be the huge success we think it should be, in turn, making the Avengers, and any possible sequel, must-see entertainment.

Jurassic Park is not just remembered for its special effects though. One of its most famous shots is just water rippling in a cup. It was suspense and it is awesome.

I thought WETA has really made a name for themselves for those amazing & life-like CGI creatures such as Gollum, King Kong, and the apes from the new POTA movie. ILM has always churn out quality work so I won't doubt them, but I hope The Avengers' Hulk will really wow the moviegoers like they did with the Transformers.
I think it's near essential that THE HULK wow moviegoers for THE AVENGERS to be a rampaging success.
Yeah, I hope ILM won't have any lapses like TIH's . But they have earned their reputation with stellar special effects in landmark movies, so tackling a like The Avengers shouldn't be a problem.
I'm really curious to see how they pull off Hulk fighting a non cg opponent such as Thor.
Agreed. This shot is so bad. The problem is he's yelling and angry, yet his forehead and everything else is completely smooth like he's had botox.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. The story, action, and musical score were all on point.
Got to agree with this. JURASSIC PARK is one of my favourite movies of all time; helps that I've into palaeontology since I was a kid.
Hulk in TIH was worst when he jumped down from that corridor in slow motion in that campus battle and landed on the ground and roared. He looked so fake in that scene.
