What is DC Entertainment doing? What is their plan?

Sure.

Superman Returns action sequences left much to be desired, when compared to the Neo flight fights from the Matrix movie. SR should have taken advantage of the better technology of the times and instead of wasting money on feats of strength, they should have given us a good villain with an epic battle.

Yeah, Matrix pretty much set the high water mark when it came to super-flying and fighting...whereas SR shot quite low, relying too much on the brand name to somehow elevate the mundane and lifeless. The needed to try harder on all fronts when it came to Superman.

I don't see a Flash movie moving forward unless something gets announced at Comic con...

Oh boy, not even a mention to any DC superheroes movies WB are interested to do.

And they want to make a franchise based on the life of Al Capone?

Sgt. Rock. **** yeah. Also, I didn't read that article since it won't let me past that goddamn Sunglass Hut ad.

That's not very likely with them being owned by Warner Bros. and all.

If they want a 2013 DC release then they need to hurry.

Very interesting article.

It makes sense after the GL disappointment. IMO WB won't be doing DC superhero stand-alone films, other than Batman, for a while now.

That's kinda' what I guessed at a while back...maybe pick up another book series and concentrate more on original film projects.

Yeah. It makes sense as WB has done better with the non-superhero franchises.

I'm wondering how much the GL disappointment is a factor in this decision.

It's like how long is WB going to hit it's head against the wall trying to create the next Ironman or Thor superhero franchise as opposed to moving in a different direction. It sounds, to the extent this report is accurate, that WB is moving in a different direction.

Not that they won't do more superhero films - just that the next 5 years or so may see attempts to go with this "Plan B".

Yeah it does makes sense but man does it sucks, especially since GL was suppose to pave the way for the DC superheroes besides Batman and Superman. Although this break from comic book movies could be a good thing since I'm worried about the possibility of oversaturation for comic-book movies and that when WB will release one comic-book movie the quality in it is evident.

I guess this means they won't rush a JL film out. In response to next year's Avengers. Which is a good thing IMO.

WB needs to really think about how they are doing superhero films and what they are doing wrong.

I assume the Batman reboot will continue. WB's Robinov is big on the Batman fracnhise. I was expecting another Batman film within 2/3 years of TDKR but maybe with this news WB will take a little longer and not rush it.

Yeah exactly, they shouldn't rush superhero movies out just for the sake of it and they should learn what went wrong with GL so they won't repeat the mistake again when it comes to a superhero's first shot at the big screen.

So instead of the WB learning from their mistakes with why Green Lantern failed they are just not bother with Superhero Movies besides Superman & Batman ?

Maybe that IS learning.

But their films improve. So there's an upside to everything. :O

There is really no point to the formation of DCE, because nothing is changing. For so long they have teased that huge announcement of release date slates that never happened.

Beat me to it, Chief. I was just about to say that Fables would be better off as a show on HBO.

I still find that story that Bill Willingham once told about a tv executive calling him hilarious. Apparently the phone rings and Willingham picks it up and the guy on the other end immediately says "Ok, so tell me why I should make a show about your comics." Willingham's reaction was like "Um, hello? Who the hell are you?"

Those Hollywood execs. They're weird people.

Ah, the old "they're not doing it now, which means when they do it it'll be cool" theory.

The sad truth is, it takes an amount of trying to get it right. I don't think they learned anything. They botched Green Lantern and now they're going into "This is box office poison, let's not do it" mode. Because while you could come to the conclusion that the movie failed because word of mouth before launch was awful, and during the launch it wasn't much better, this execs find it easier to blame the character or genre.

I guess maybe once Avengers makes a gazillion dollars WB execs will "realize" there is "awakened interest" in the genre.

Good post^^^^^ I hope they don't back off for FIVE years, that would be ridiculous IMO. Apply lessons now, in the short term, and start hiring the right people for these projects. Obviously they got stung big-time with GL, but giving up on DC proper would suck. TDKR and Superman are a go, they've got a small window of time to shake things up. I know they just did that with the whole reorganization, maybe trying to rush GL at the same time was the problem. I'm sure everyone involved felt like they had their hands in the mix, and that's definitely not good. Look at Favreau turning down IM3. Wasn't it the case that he didn't like being "directed" himself by Marvel?
