What is DC Entertainment doing? What is their plan?

Superman's baggage is a 200M+ name. MOS will be huge if marketed right and is a good film. Superman Returns didn't do good because simply put audiences hated it. Their's little buzz on this film? Well except for casting which has gotten some nice buzz on a lot of websites, lets not forget this film is a year and a half away. We also know little about the plot and theirs been no release of photos or anything yet. You have to build interest and that hasn't started yet since the film has even started filming yet.

Well, Zack Snyder making Sucker Punch certainly isn't going to generate positive buzz. Apart from Nolan, the cast is the only thing that can draw any buzz towards this film at this point.

Once again, I feel obliged to defend Superman Returns. People did not "hate" it. It made more money than Batman Begins, and had to put up with the highly anticipated Pirates of the Caribbean sequel. The CinemaScore rating from exit audiences was a solid "B+" grade.

For a movie with no punching and no proper origin to introduce the character to a new generation of moviegoers, that's not bad. It was considered a disappointment because the Superman brand name sets very high expectations, and because its "budget" included sunk costs from previous failed Superman projects.

The reboot will easily do better than Superman Returns if the advertising shows people the action that was absent from the 2006 film. I'm still worried that it's going to shut out younger audiences though. Fanboys keep insisting that the movies avoid the origin, even though the origin hasn't been properly done on the big screen in over three decades. Smallville doesn't count; it was a small show on the low-rated WB/CW networks that played to a teen niche audience. The Timmverse animated series doesn't count either, it may be "recent" to us but an entire generation of kids has been born after it. A person who was an infant in 1996 when that show premiered is a 15 year today.

The casting of Russell Crowe as Jor-EL and the construction of smallville make it obvious.

It wasn't hated...it just wasn't liked very much because it wasn't very exciting or fun.

That doesn't mean it's going to be a dragged-out origins story that takes forever before Superman even dons the red cape....it's more likely to just go back to the past in flashbacks. (In fact, I believe over in Rumorville, that's exactly what they said is going on.) And post-Crisis, Smallville and ole Ma 'n' Pa Kent are still around (until Brainiac, that is....), so all of the Smallville sequences may be seen in "real time" with a grown-up Clark going to visit mom 'n' pop at the old homestead.

The only problem I see with an origin film is that it seems like every superhero movie has to start out with one. I'm just wondering if the public is ever going to get burnt out on them.

Well I hope Perry White and Jimmy Olsen will be cast in MOS, strange so far to hear casting for a Supes movie without those characters. SR was visually well done but story-wise just a regurgitation of the original flick from Richard Donner. MOS should be an edgier, provocative and more action-packed take on Supes, at least that's what it seems.

Outside of Supes and Bats WB better regroup from what they did wrong with GL to put something else out there, but at their rate it probably won't be until between 2015 and 2020.

I really hope we will atleast get two other heroes out before 2015

I disagree that SR was visually well done.

It was too dark, it tried too hard visually and Singer's effort to capture some earlier time color sense just backfired.

There were some comments/criticisms from folks about the film not having Superman embrace the American flag like he did in previous films and there were others who were turned off by the idea of him being a dead beat dad. There also might have been the negative taste in some folks mouths from Superman IV and the fact that it took so long to develop another film. Of course there are a lot of folks who just plain hate Superman. You can see that on any forum on the internet.

I don't think there would have been as much ire over the whole spying/stalking and kid stuff if the movie wasn't so somber and low on excitement. It leaves little else to latch onto aside from the internal/emotional stuff, and subsequently calls attention to some of the sloppy logic in the narrative.

The fact that Supes in SII gave up his powers and responsibilities for a roll in the hay with Lois didn't cause a whole bunch of backlash because the movie was a fun ride, and at least they had the character repent for his mistakes in a meaningful way. In SR, all he did was take Lois on a brief (and hardly visible) flight, and all was okay, apparently.

Nah, there would have been people who would have picked it up regardless. For crying out loud, there are entire organizations that look out for that kind of stuff.

Sorry but this was pretty funny to me. :pal:

"A new Superman movie's coming out!"

"Yeah but the last one from 30 years ago that was made by completely different people wasn't very good. And why'd it take them so long? Screw this movie."

So what did those organizations do when SR came out?

I liked Superman Returns aside from the bad casting of Lois Lane. The problem with that film was that it was not innovative enough and I think people wanted more after seeing the Matrix moves.

I'm glad the new Superman movie is starting from a new beginning.

Care to elaborate on that?

I apologize if someone else already said this, but from what I notice DC tends to focus more on the animated movies insteado of live action ones. So far all their animated movies have been great and really close to the source material. Also many of these marvel superhero movies had their own cartoon shows while many DC cartoons have really only been superman and batman. Yes there have been others such as Teen Titans, Legion of Superheroes and show like superman/aquaman hour but more marvel shows have come out and showcased their characters which has helped. I think if DC did a Flash movie that did something cool with the speed to let the audience feel apart of it that would do very well. As for Superman they need to give it that charm from the Christipher Reeve days.

Sure.

Superman Returns action sequences left much to be desired, when compared to the Neo flight fights from the Matrix movie. SR should have taken advantage of the better technology of the times and instead of wasting money on feats of strength, they should have given us a good villain with an epic battle.
