What mistakes can be learned from the last GL film?

CGI is going to continue to dominate. Remember folks, it's not coming out 'til 2020, the level of computer generated visuals is only going to improve. It'll look spectacular.

1. Make the best movie you can, the biggest flaw of Green Lantern (2011) was the fact that they held back and intentionally forced stuff in to set up a sequel. Chris Nolan hit the nail on the head when he said something like you have to make the best film you can and not think of the next one.

2. The right Director, get a director with a vision. Not just a good director who has no previous in the genre and doesn't really care to much for the character.

3. Pick a villain or villains and use them properly, Hector Hammond's role in the 2011 movie was so pointless and he was only there to serve as a plot device in order for Hal to take on Parallax who was severly underused.

4. Don't be afraid to change things, it's clear the CG suit didn't really work. A suggestion I have had is let the GL costumes be uniforms that the corps where. It can have parts that light up when the ring is on do that it looks like the Green Lantern costume but when the ring is off it could look like civilian clothing. The mask can be something Hal specifically wears whilst on Earth that he makes himself or something.

5. Let the hero discover things for himself instead of it been told to him (and us). This is also an area where you don't need to explain everything and can save stuff for later movies.

6. Let Hal be Hal, I really still think a Ryan Reynolds was a great choice for Hal Jordan but they didn't let him (or rather the script didn't let him) really embrace the role. I felt they had held Ryan back in a role that should suit his comedic timing to a T.

7. Embrace the corps and the team up aspects, Hal should never have beaten Parallax on his own. Especially when dozens of corps had died with ease against him. We knew Hal was going to become the greatest a Green Lantern of them all but he didn't hav to become the greatest by the end of the first movie. This is why I think the next film needs to use the Manhunters, they're prime for a lot of use of other GL corps and a good excuse for Hal & Sinestro to team up before they eventually become enemies in a later film.

8. Finally, don't be afraid to set the film in Space (or at least most of it). Green Lantern could have been a hit like Guardians of the Galaxy had WBs not plsyer it safe and set the thing around another Earth threat and Hero has Girlfriend complex. The animated film First Flight showed pretty much how to make a top Green Lantern movie. Not every superhero ha to be bogged down with Girlfriend trouble and saving the world. How about letting the hero save the entire Universe?

She is the director of Wonder Woman has no experience of directing comic book movies (At least Martin Campbell had directed Zorro and Bond before GL.) and similar to Mr. Campbell, McLaren knows nothing about WW, so it can be said that she does not care about the character either, she is just a good director (Like Martin Campbell.).

Also, another important point I want to add is this... Green lantern movie should be kid friendly (I'm Not saying it should be Kiddy)


The characters like Kilowog, Tomar-Re should look likable not Ugly (imagine how many people would have liked Rocket raccoon if he looked ugly like Howard The Duck.)

The villains should also should look threatening not repulsive and ugly....like Hector Hammond and Parallax, and finally Oa should look beautiful and interesting planet not boring and dull.

Tbh I think I should have put it better, I simply meant get the right director. One with a vision and one who has an idea of how to put this type of film together.

Although for all we know Wonder Woman could end up been a mess.

I agree on the kid friendly, there's to make it serious without it been too serious and ways to make it kid/family friendly without it been a kids movie.

So that makes her a good choice from the start, I admit I've never heard of her. Guess from what you said she fits perfectly into what I think is necessary to direct that film.

I think a big problem with the 2011 film was that the ring was never portrayed as being badass, powerful, scary, a useful problem-solving tool, etc. I don't imagine many people were coming out of the cinema thinking about how much they want a GL ring. Just compare that to say....a lightsaber in Star Wars.

Sure, Hal made a sword, a minigun, etc, but they were never shown to be used successfully to damage something or someone.

It only takes a couple moments to establish how awesome the ring is:
-A single shot from a ring or a handgun construct blasting a hole through a redshirt's head.
-The swing of a sword construct slicing off a limb or the front of a moving car.

Just imagine a scene like this with Sinestro in some divey space bar taking care of business his own way.

The action just needs to be a lot more visceral in general. Imagine an atmospheric war scene like this in a GLCorps movie. (Actually the idea of a new GL being chosen and dropped in the middle of a battle could be cool too). Imagine if Parallax was portrayed like these creatures.

If the films' release date line up like BVS and SS has, the GL reboot is going to come out on the SAME weekend -- June 19, 2020. Unless the character's viability has been significantly boosted by the JL films, I would say swap it with Cyborg and release it on April 3, 2020.

The public perception of GL will be vastly different by the time the movie comes out. Hal will have starred in two JL films by that time.

i think Zack Snyder's Hal will win audiences over by then, so the release date won't be a problem.

- I think the big thing is get someone who loves Sci-Fi. From Space Odyssey to Star Wars, from Wrath of Khan to Wall-E.
- Keep the tone mostly upbeat, without getting too off beat and quirky. A little quirky is good, but the tone should primarily be epic and awe inspiring, not snarky.
- Make the movie vibrant, and heavily colored. Oa in GL 2011 looked like a green space turd. Eye candy.
- Write strong friendships. If we believe in the friendships these characters have, everything else is icing on the cake.
- I'd like a movie that occasionally gets eerie, and uncomfortable. The scope of what The Green Lanterns encounter should be off putting. Not that they'll use him, but imagine bumping into the Anti-Monitor in space. That should be an uncomfortable, frightening encounter.

Campbell openly admitted in interviews only merely months away from release, the interview & coverage I read was in Empire magazine, he had little experience, interest with SFX 'heavy productions' or with, indeed, very little knowledge of the character, or had even taken a vested interest in conducting any research on GL ahead of filming. I think this is why Johns was drafted in to advise him. I, don't mind the 2011 film, I actually quite like it but the direction they are stating for the new film requires all that Campbell wasn't. It needs an energetic, young, free thinking visionary, Campbell is a solid director in the genres he's experienced in, after all, Casino Royale is one of the finest Bonds, but a GL film is vastly different. My choice would be Mathew Vaughn, a man with experience in CGI film making, but not to excess, able to make very little look a lot, and fight choreography experience at the highest level (Kingsmen & Kick Ass show that).

Get an actual good villain. Hector Hammond was a joke and impossible to take seriously. Parallax should've been a surprise reveal for the third act but they shot their load on him way too early as well.

I'm also less interested in learning from the mistakes of the last GL movie and more concerned that they may not be learning from the mistakes of the previous DCEU movies. For one, a major problem with Suicide Squad is they only took six weeks to write the script, which is absurd. They better not have a similarly rushed time table here.

And you need to make sure your protagonist is likable and gives the actors a chance to flex a little, because a consistent problem with Superman has been that he's very wooden and constantly looks like somebody burned his order at Dennys. Your leads need to have at least somewhat of a personality.

I know they said this would be "Lethal Weapon in space", which is a great approach, but they should perhaps take that approach even more literally and have Hal be the loose cannon Riggs character and Stewart be the by-the-book Murtaugh type. However, they need to walk a fine line here and not make it too jokey like the Reynolds film but also not too morose like the more recent DCEU efforts.
