So I've been married for four years and my wife knows I love Spider-Man. I have thousands of comics, which she's never read. One day we decided to try something the other likes. She would read a complete story-arc from Spider-Man and I had to watch a chick flick (maybe it was an episode of Grey's Anatomy or something).
Well anyway she read the first seven issues of Ultimate Spider-Man. She really liked it. But do you know what she said? She said she really liked it because Spider-Man was funny. She said she really liked how Spider-Man was really funny the whole time. Seriously. This woman has seen all three movies multiple times in theaters and multiple times on bluray. Yet she had no idea Spider-Man is suppose to be funny. You see what I'm getting at?

Raimi needs to come back with 4 and fix this problem already. I feel like we really haven't seen Spider-Man on screen yet. He needs to quip, it is such an important part of the character.

Although I agree with the lack of quipage it is hardly the biggest problem for me of these movies.

I used to read Spider-Man comics & watched Spider-Man: The Animated Series when I was growing up & the character was portrayed as being more 'witty' in terms of little one line quips.. & I really liked that. It was one of the things that made me take to the character so well.

I wouldn't mind seeing a more 'witty' Spider-Man in the next film

I've never heard this complaint before. Thank you for this refreshingly original thread.

Apparently being an jackass hasn't gone out of style yet. Thanks UperErret for the constructive criticism.

I was pointing out that the average movie goer wouldn't even know that Spidey is suppose to be funny, which is a shame.

I agree. It's a shame Raimi hasn't done this because if you've played the movie games you'll see that Tobey can play a smartass Spidey.

However some fights would have been ruined if Spidey made quips.

Spidey does make quips in the films though . It mostly noticable when he is fighting Sandman on the armored truck in SM 3. I would also like to see more of it though but usually the last battle is emotional so I'm not sure it would work there.

UH,maybe just maybe the actor he has playing (SPIDER-MAN) doesn't have the range to do that.. don't get me wrong, the actor is good at playing the loser with no personality but,if you ask him to play sum1 else ummm,he can't!!!

sum1 call Shia PLEASE!!!!

If you read what I posted you'll see that I said that Tobey can be a witty Spider-man. It's the writing that's the problem here.

And Shia as Spidey?

Shia Labeouf as Spider-Man now that would be a very bad idea. People would say hey it's the guy from Transformers! I don't see him doing the job half as good as Tobey. He's a bit funny but his performance in the 2 Michael Bay movies didn't impress me that much, he's a bit overrated.

That's still down to Raimi. I mean, the script comes first, right? Then you find the right actor to play the role that was put forth in the script. And Tobey can do funny - he just hasn't had the chance. He actually came up with the sherriff line in #3, one of the better one-liners we've had from Spidey.

Nice thread, DAC. Yes, this has been discussed before, but having one thread dedicated to it in this sparse time is no harm at all. I do agree that Spidey's abilities aside, his wisecracks are very important and should not be overlooked so easily as it shows depth to the character on how he deals with the evil he encounters. Not only is it confidence, but it's his own way of handling the sh** in the world. It's a defence mechanism. I've actually got a story where he's with Daredevil where he actually says this in defence to DD saying how inappropriate the constant jokes are.

Raimi has said his biggest priority in the next film is to get the character of Spider-Man 100% right, so I'm sure a lot of these problems will be adressed.

Cool. Note to Raimi: Spidey also wears a mask.

I'll believe that when I see it. The thing is and I'm going to be frank with my opinions here, is that, Raimi's spidey movies...all 3 of them...yes, all 3 are actually solid and decently made movies, particularly the first 2. However, they're luke-warm adaptations of the source material.

Spider-Man in these movies for the most part is a poorly written character, much like most of the characters in the film. Peter and spider-man need to be individually distict but simultaneously share the same certain qualies. Spidey/Peter doesn't need to be spouting quips every 1.5 seconds but frequent and well placed, witty (emphasis on witty) lines need to come out of his mouth.

One of the problems is, that the threats are way too personal and that's a mistake. The comics and the cartoons have told marvelous stories where the threat isn't directly or personally tied into Peter's personal life. Spectacular is a great show and it's a great show because it's well written and the people involved have adapted the comics with a clear understanding of who and what spider-man is al about.

Anyway, the movie's character have little to know dimensions to them. Peter is weak and spineless and has no desire to stand up for himself. Look at spider-man 3 when that guy is shining light in his eyes in the class room or lobbing paper projectiles at peter...it's ridiculous. After 3 movies, why is Peter's behaviour exactly the same it was prior to when he was bitten in the first movie.

Then, there's the dialogue. I feel the dialogue is well, stupid. It feels so scripted and bland and there's nothing in the movies that sounds remotely compelling. The closest we got to suspense and real tension however, was in sm3 with the whole Harry telling Peter he's the other guy...urgh! the films are riddled with so many messed up areas and countless problems, that sm4 will have to look and feel almost like a completely different movie from the rest in the series.

Personally, I'd prefer an entire new cast and crew because I feel and rightfully so I might add that Raimi's understanding of spider-man and his world is just...off. Way off. Sure, he captures the heart and spirit but there's a whole lot more. These movies are supposed to be gripping, exciting, compelling and visually stunning but they fall way too short from the mak.

no.

If I was a moderator around here, I'd ban people for suggesting Shia LeBouf as Spidey :barf: :oldrazz:

It's ridiculous that Raimi portrayed this kind of behavior occurring in a college classroom to begin with.

I agree. College students are supposed to be more mature than that.
It's because Sam Raimi/Sony/Marvel think of Spider-Man 'ONLY' as a children's property like Hannah-Montanna or Dora The Explorer. Their only purpose with this character is to make the most money off of him, by appealing to little kids and dumbing down all elements of the character, comics and movies.

Sam Raimi isn't capable of fixing anything, because he likes his version of his juvenile movies...PETER-MAN.

Thank you! This (IMO) is the biggest f***-up of the whole series. You think with the humor in the Evil Dead series, that Spidey would joke all of time. But he's had like 4 jokes in the whole series.

Iron Man's funnier than Spider-Man movie-wise.
