Psychological horror/mystery.

In 1985 Enid Baines works for the British Board of Film Classification during the peak of the 'Video Nasty' era. Enid is known - and sometimes mocked - for her particularly strict opinions on what 'people shouldn't see'. Despite being in her early 30s, she dresses much older, lives alone, and her only social life is an occasional dinner with her parents. During one of these dinners we learn that Enid's sister, Nina, disappeared when they were little, and their parents have finally decided to have her declared legally dead. However, whilst watching a horror film, Enid sees an actress onscreen who she comes to believe is her missing sister as an adult, forced into a career in exploitative films, and sets out to track down the director of the film and do whatever is necessary to rescue her...

The film captures the era well (Margaret Thatcher, industrial unrest, high crime rate). It also does a great job of recreating the decor (offices, living rooms, seedy VHS video shops - with the 'special' stock kept under the counter). The first thirty minutes are a compelling setup. Unfortunately, most of rest of the film doesn't quite do it justice. Niamh Algar is superb as Enid, and Michael Smiley plays a wonderfully sleazy film producer, but the rest of the cast feel a little wooden (an exception is Adrian Schiller, as the film director Enid is searching for - but he's sadly underused). As the story moves along, events become increasingly far-fetched (there is a 'maybe' explanation given for that, which you can accept or not). The pace also slackens a bit. The ending, though is a cracker. When the film finished I played those last seven minutes again - twice. It's a shame most of the film doesn't quite live up to its occasional flashes of brilliance. 6.5/10

Comedic riff on Hitchcock's classic 'Strangers on a Train', it has a few funny moments and the Crystal/DeVito dynamic is amusing.
