Film What was the last movie you watched? Part 2

General Film

So, went in with very low expectations here but thinking at least I'd give the last DCEU flick a chance. And surprisingly, I enjoyed it more than I would've thought. All the underwater scenes could've felt as tedious as some other cgi-fests have, like Quntumania or some recent monster films, but it worked here for me. Black Manta is actually the only classic Aquaman villian I remember from old comics, hence liked having him back with a once again fine performance from Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and then a decent closure.

Over all nothing great but a better dumb fun spectacle than like T:L&T, The Flash or Quntumania IMHO. Equally enjoyable as The Marvels and Blue Beetle. Yeah, maybe I've turned into looking at these super hero films as dumb fun flicks for now. :(

54 (1998)

Even as a kid up here in Scandinavia we'd read about this infamous place called Studio 54 in late 70s; How some journalists tried to get in just to write articles about the celebrities, the drugs and whatever decadent orgies that would go on there.

Ngl, a late 90s flick about the height of disco era with Salma and Neve - yep, I'll watch it! Well, Salma and Neve turned out having kinda minor roles (but Salma as an aspiring singer at least got her short disco diva singer moment close to the end!). And from now on I can never imagine Sela Ward in any other way than.. erm, here.

It's a decent story built around Philippe's young character which thanks to his abs while wearing those ridiculously shorts gets a job as one of these half naked bartenders at Studio 54. Yeah, literally male strippers behind a bardisk.. And then various drama ensues.

Mostly an entertaining time document IMHO, but with some really decent over all performances as well. We all know by now that Mike Meyers is way more than old SNL characters which he once again showed here. Also, Ryan Phillipe felt like a true up and coming young actor with roles like this and others some years on but then.. he kinda disappeared?

Crap, how could this went this long? About a disco era flick? I'm sorry, my friends.

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES

I basically had a mini marathon of random segments from the original series hosted by the late, great, Robert Stack.

Sacred To Death
1706423629727.png
Probably one of the eeriest segments on the series .
The story centers on a Canadian woman ,who alleged that she was being stalked , harassed, and abused by an unknown assailant throughout the 1980s.
At first law enforcement believes her, but they soon begin to suspect she's fabricating the whole story, while she insists that someone is out to get her.
The case came to a bizarre end ,when the woman, Cindy James, was found dead , with the circumstances of her death ,the subject of controversy .

The Cash Landrum incident
1706425771240.png
1706423963030.png
In 1980 a Houston Texas family claims they encountered an Unidentified flying about late one night on an empty road , followed by the appearance of several US Army helicopters .
The family later came down with serious illnesses, and were diagnosed with exposure to heavy doses of radiation.
The family claimed the military covered up the appearance of the UFO , while the official position of the Military is that the UFO incident ,and the presence of Army Helicopters , never took place.

The Disappearance of John and Linda Sohus
1706424602342.png
A young married couple in the wealthy community of San Marino California, go missing in 1985 , in addition to their mysterious house guest .
After the couple's remains are found a decade later , and their mysterious Houseguest is seen alive in Connecticut under a different name,
It soon becomes apparent, the couple met with foul play, and their mysterious Houseguest, is not who he appears to be.

Death Of Bobby Fuller
1706424962090.png
In 1966 , on the height of his stardom, Rock singer Bobby Fuller is found dead , with the authorities ruling his death a suicide .
However , obvious inconsistences, abandoned physical evidence, and a lack of thorough investigation, cast a cloud over the official ruling,
with Fuller's family and friends, believing Fuller was murdered .
A mysterious Blonde, her alleged LA gangster boyfriend, and a potential drug fueled beach party , all add to the intriguing mystery of a rock star gone way too soon.
The Segment features interviews with the legendary Case
y Kasem, and Rock and Roll Producer, Bob Keene.

The Tomorrow War (2021) - Started off great as the concept was interesting (global draft, the tech, training, etc.), then it fell off the rails for me after the mid-way point.
In the beginning they did a great job of making you ask the question "How horrifying must it be in the future?" when you find out less than 500k humans are left in existence & when in present day they refuse to show any war footage out of fear of scaring people (& encouraging draft dodging). Good job there.

It became less interesting for me once they concocted the toxin & headed back to the present – fell flat & became generic from then on.

Mr Brooks (2007)

Psychological thriller starring Kevin Costner (as mild-mannered businessman/loving husband and father by day, serial killer by night) and William Hurt (as the manifestation of Costner's dark side). Demi Moore plays the cop investigating the killings. Costner and Hurt are great, Moore is solid, and Marg Helgenberger and Danielle Panabaker (as Costner's wife and daughter) provide good support. It's an interesting idea, but one diluted by sub-plots that either don't tie in to the main storyline, or when they do, they feel like they've been forced together. It's as though this started out as two completely separate scripts that someone combined into one as an afterthought. There's a good score by Ramin Djawadi (best known for Game of Thrones).

Apparently intended as the start of a trilogy, but poor box office and mixed reviews scuppered that. 6.5/10
