The Voices
Dark Comedy/Thriller/Horror

This movie is up there with "Joker" showing mental health problems. Kinda sad. The cat & dog have some funny moments. I was intrigued throughout. The ending caught me off guard, but it makes sense.

The Lighthouse
Visually stunning. Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson play off eachother in this so well. Movie feels like it could be interpreted in multiple ways. Characters seem to have been inspired some Greek mythology figures.

The Holdovers, 2023

I actually watched this on Christmas because I saw that it was finally streaming and had been torn between wanting to watch it but also avoided it due to the issues surrounding it's director, Alexander Payne. I think I went into this movie expecting something completely different from what I got. I knew assumed it'd have a few laughs, but about 20 minutes into the movie I found myself thinking, "wait, this is ****ing hilarious", and I adjusted my expectations almost immediately because I needed to like this movie. Not because of the praise surrounding it, but because of the subject matter and being a fan of period pieces. I ended up absolutely loving this but, as much as it also broke me. Dominic Sessa having a outbreak performance like this is just incredible and I hope he has a bright future.

The Zone of Interest, 2023

One of the benefits of living in smalltown USA is movies like this getting released and not being anywhere near you so you have to either way for streaming or physical releases.

It feels weird to admit this, but I absolutely, deeply loved this movie. It's brutal, painful, and so completely raw that you felt like the characters you were watching were living in a completely different reality from your own and as you the viewer you're were of their surrounding and just how nonchalant they were and especially how content they were in living a normal life, and they refuse to give that up. The wife, especially. The mother's reaction to their surroundings and the realization of what she's seeing happening just beyond the property line and her immediate leave of the residence afterwards was masterfully done.
