This is more true than usual with Revan. Beyond the usual canon, the character's most significant role was as the player character in KOTOR 1, where you could shape them to your liking. So it's fan expectation according to canon and also the various decision of each player.

My fear with using Revan is the inability of the fanbase to accept changes. I wouldn't have a problem, but I am certain a lot of fans would complain loudly. Made worse here, because like you said, everyone has their own version of the character. Even a straight translation would likely have people complaining they didn't go with the Dark Side route in the game.

This is the same reason I think a Mass Effect movie would be doomed. Particularly with RPG video games that give you choices, everyone plays their version differently but their version and how they played is what they would want to see in the air. At least allowed vocal portion of the audience would

The thing with Mass Effect until the end of 3, all the different paths were great. That’s why I kept replaying 1-3 so many times.

I can buy that some people wouldn't like it, but they would really need to go with the light side ending in the film. It's more in keeping with the spirit of the films, and I think it's more interesting for a bad character to be redeemed this way than for a bad character to be temporarily good and then go back to being bad. More than that, though, the dark side route was more than just the choice at the end, it was going around like a psychopath randomly killing people, while your good teammates make comments about how you shouldn't have done that and then move on like nothing happened. I'm not criticizing the game for it, but in a movie it would be ridiculous. Even if they toned it down, it undercuts the plot twist because it's like, this guy who's been acting like a badguy the whole time...is a badguy!!! Oh my god, who could have seen that coming???!!! In the games, you don't think anything of it because it's you, the player, doing the out of control psycho murderer stuff.

In games like that, my policy is to take the good approach first not because I necessarily like it better but because it tends to better suit the storyline, while the bad approach is just being an a****** for kicks.

Yeah, the heroic version is the canon storyline for me, while the villain version is for fun. But there are multiple different ways you can be heroic, including letting certain bad guys die for eg, that I wouldn't complain about going either way in a film. It’s not like the other paths were inferior or necessarily controversial, just different paths which created interesting variety.

Precisely. Even Revan's gender will be different to some people. And unlike the voice-acted companion characters, Revan is also a completely mute, blank slate. The character almost exclusively exists in fans' heads. I think that's what's cool about them. KOTOR is a pretty by-the-numbers Star Wars story really. Getting to participate in the story was what made the game memorable. I get the fan demand, but Disney are better off for picking another era and creating new stories. There is plenty of room afterall.

Revan showed up in comics and outside of hiding his face most of the time, they drew the character as a male.
In the Old Republic there is a whole story around him where he is presented as male who choose the light side.

When it comes to Revan, most people accept the overall canon of the male who turned to the dark side and redeemed himself to become one of the greatest jedi and sith ever.

The other choices people use for fun but mostly they go with the common canon.
So that is not a problem if a movie about revan is done.
Of course you will still have people not liking it, but thats the usual group.
You wont find them in larger numbers because they are upset that revan wouldnt be a female smuggler or so.

This is true. The Exile is light-side female in canon right?

I don't think there would be an uproar if Disney stuck to the old canon versions of the characters. I think that would be accepted. If that was the case, I still think the risk of disappointment is quite high, and the reward ultimately isn't worth it. I doubt 'KOTOR' would bring in any fans that aren't already down for 'Star Wars'... if that makes sense.

I'm guessing Disney is confused at this point.
  • TFA huge success.
  • Rogue One really good follow up for a Star Wars universe film.
  • TLJ wow is everyone pissed.
  • Solo everyone was so mad from TLJ they didn't bother to show up. Then when they did it felt like the film was a let down, and it seemed Han's character didn't fit.
  • Mandalorian everyone's gushing
  • TRoS everyone's meh
WB/DC can tell you Legacy characters everyone thinks they know are tricky. You have to get them 100% right and not change what's important. They changed most of their characters including Batman, Superman, and Joker just enough to annoy people.

Honestly they need to go KOTOR, some new character like Mando who's adjacent to the timeline, or way into the future and just drop the legacy character films. They also need to sit down and figure out what they know about the force, the Jedi, the Sith, the Mandalorians, the Ewoks, etc. and figure out some rules. I get the whole force making you feel another's existence, move objects, even the communication piece, and energy projection (lightning). Beaming masks and light sabers across space and time was a bit much though.

Honestly I get that their upper management enjoys the company, and it's returns, but I wonder if they even enjoy or understand the product.

Viewers are gushing about The Mandalorian mostly because of Baby Yoda. Not everyone maybe but the vast majority.

They can't coast on that forever. We'll see how season 2 goes. It can't be another six-eight episodes of "Bad guys almost get Baby Yoda but he (or she) miraculously escapes by using the Force".

Moff Gideon, the dark saber, the Purge, and now the search for Baby Yoda's world or at least a Jedi sect could really lead to some rich mythology. Because yes it could become very "freak of the week" like.
