What would you do with 600 million dollars?

Guys it's 600 million dollars, most of you are acting like it's 6 million (well except the guy who wants to buy Marvel).

I'd buy everyone in my family a mansion, and a nice car, and give them ten million dollars.

Then I would go have fun with my half a billion dollars.
 
I'd probably do something evil like self-publish a book, then buy a bunch of copies until it became a bestseller. Then people would start buying it themselves because they'd think everyone else had already read it.
 
First thing I would do is hire an accountant/financial adviser to set up some accounts to earn interest. As others have said I would payoff family members mortgages/loans and set up accounts for children/niece/nephew collage funds (only if they agree to go to collage). Then set up some trust funds for their futures (in their 30s maybe).

After the family is taken care of I'd buy a nice piece of land to build my dream house. Nothing too big, like someone else mentioned I don't want to have to furnish a bunch of rooms I wouldn't use. I do want to have a nice entertainment room/man cave. My main splurge though would be a garage/warehouse where I would keep all of the classic cars I would buy (something to rival Jay Leno).

I would definitely retire using some of the interest mentioned above to live off of. I would give plenty to charity, I always though it would be cool to walk around at Christmas time dropping huge donations in those salvation army buckets.

In this day and age when people are hacking Playstation accounts for personal information, I'd want as much anonymity as possible. Based on prior hacks on PS, Steam, etc. no one really knows for sure how much of their personal info is out there until you wind up with several empty bank accounts. I'm not saying I or anyone else here is stupid with their personal info, but if someone wants it bad enough there are several ways they can try to get it.

That said, I'd remain anonymous, but I probably would buy a house for my family, pay off my parents debts, and buy some video games and toys (vintage Star Wars, etc.) I never figured I'd be able to afford.
 
BTW 70% of people who win the lottery end up broke.

Just saw that statistic earlier today.

I am not a big believer in karma, but I wouldn't flaunt it to anyone. Again, besides asking for trouble, you just make yourself look like a dick.
 
When I say gloat I just mean accepting your check in front of flashing cameras knowing everyone who crossed you will be extra salty when they hear about it.
 
First thing I would have to do is put it all out on my bed, and roll around in it nekid.
 
Is it really such a big deal? Does anyone here remember who won the last lottery? Much less a lottery from a few years back?

You get fifteen minutes of fame. If that.
 
But during that 15 minutes, you can lose friends, tear your family apart, and receive some seriously disturbing interactions with nutjobs all butt hurt cuz you took "their" money.

If you manage to win/acquire 600 million dollars and somehow go bankrupt, you never deserved the money in the first place. I mean you'd have to be really, really silly to lose that amount of money.

I know that, at least with the New Zealand lottery, when you win a large amount the lottery people sit you down and give you some advice. With something like the Powerball (which has yet to reach NZ$30M) they strongly advise the winner(s) to hire a financial adviser.

I read not too long ago that one of the key things the lottery people will tell you is to take X amount (say, $30,000 or so) and go silly with it, get that initial excitement out of your system. Seems like that would be a good idea, and maybe waiting a set amount of time, say a month for example. Let it sink in, make some plans. It's when people go nuts and buy up everything they set their eyes on, big gifts for friends, family, get guilt-tripped into helping strangers (see: con-men) that they end up with nothing to show for it. Some people even end up in debt, which is pretty ridiculous.
 
I've thought about this question or something like it a lot. Invest, save, and donate. Whether won or earned, same deal. Just enough to support the comfortable life I'm living now and a family. Nothing more, nothing less. Never saw the need for more.
 
Well that makes sense. Rich people who actually earned their money (even if they did so through unethical practices) know what they're doing.

If you take a college athlete of average intelligence (or a moron who got through life because of his athletic abilities) and throw millions of dollars at him, why would you think he would invest it well?

The lottery is called a "tax on stupid people" for a reason.

They want you to spend it all. Stimulate the economy. Those luxury cars and McMansions aren't going to buy themselves.

Pay someone to handle all the annoying phone calls I'm sure I'd get.

Gambling effect, that's why I won't buy the ticket or send a text message

If I do as I say and find a tossed ticket or am given one and it's a winner, I will donate most of the price money to people suffering from extra heavy student loans, preferably anonymously
 
People who go from nothing to everything soo quickly usually wind up breaking apart their families/commit suicide/etc. Its pretty ridiculous how dark the other side is to winning all that money.
