Ive heard a lot of people say the first part of the movie depicting Supermans return is to rushed and fails to give enough insight into what he was doing whilst away so im curious what do you think could have been cut out to make room for these Krypton journey scenes ?

I think there are other deleted scenes that are probably more important.

Lois Lane....

Maybe the whole Lois&co almost drowning scene.

But honestly I want the movie as it is and include the deleted scene.

I would've cut down some of the Luthor scenes. IMO some of them, paticulary the train set sequence kinda drags on too long. I also would've kept his "demise" ambigious so cut the island/helicopter scene at the end.

However, personally...I would sacrifice the "Return to Krypton" for the entire "Smallville" sequence any day of the week.

The "discovering his power" sequence, Kitty's wild ride and flight to the hospital, and most of Luthor's heist could have easily been cut.

Its hard to think of cutting anything. Every scene had some kind of purpose. The Lex island scene at the end acted as a bridge between the Superman/Lois hospital scene and his hospital disappearance scene. It would have been choppy without it.

Disagreed.

The flashback scene was of no substantial value as kickass as it is.

The heist scene didn't need to be seen, nor was the jolly gaff by kitty necessary. They're stealing kryptonite so what if superman shows up... just use it on him.

maybe some other stuff could have been trimmed to add krypton or other cut scenes we know were filmed such as clark reading the newspapers about all the disasters he failed to prevent while he was away for 5 years.

All of the Luthor heist, including the Mustang wild ride, and Kitty's medi-flight; just pointless dramatic flab.
The young Clark sequence. The taxi hailing scene. Superman could in the rooftop scene( and should )have been the one to say why he left without saying goodbye. All of the peeping Tom scenes.

They didn't really have to cut anything to add Krypton at all. They could have featured the cut STM and Krypton footage intertwined with the credits and then went right into Clark landing on the farm as the script called for.

They could have included a little more of Smallville by eliminating the end of the Kitty scene where she tries to convince him to stay, the scene of him putting the suitcases in the closet, and other such scenes.

Delete Jason, chop most of Clark's brooding about Lois.

I didn't mind him brooding, I just wanted a bit more explanation about it. What exactly was bothering Clark the most? Was it simply that Lois had moved on? Was it the article she wrote about the world not needing Superman? Was it guilt for leaving her and not saying anything? They should have delved into this a bit more by actually giving Clark some more LINES or maybe having him narrate various parts of the story (like Peter does in Spider-Man) so we get a better sense of where he's really at in his life. They left too much up to Clark throwing dirty looks in the background.

I saw the movie for the third time last night (first on the IMAX - even better that way) and I totally agree that the Smallville running scene could just not be in the movie at all. The drowning scene could have been much shorter or yeh, not in there at all b/c Superman starts drowning 5 minutes later and its sad-music drowning overkill. I think some daily planet stuff could be cut out, and I agree the stalker scenes should have been totally cut out. Someone else (on imdb I think) came up with the idea of Richard and Lois inviting Clark over for dinner, and I was thinking last night that may have worked alot better. I actually like the heist scene/Kitty rescue scene alot, though I dont know if the gattling gun scene before it is relevant to anything. Mini-Metropolis does indeed drag, and I think thats my main gripe with this movie, is that it could have been much tighter, editing-wise.

I dont think I needed those Krypton scenes in the movie b/c they may have bogged it down even more, though I would love the option of an extended cut along with the theatrical on the dvd.

since i'm not really a fan of Superdad-Superkid for this first film after 20 years i would've gotten rid of the entire concept altogether (maybe keep that poignant momment in Jason's bedroom for the last movie). instead i would've emphasized Superman's loneliness by going more for the storyline of the World moving on without him and emphasizing the fact that he's an alien and never really feel like he "belonged". (funny though, knowing Singer's agenda i'm surprised he didnt go for this angle.)

I would've sacrificed nothing. I would've added the Krypton sequence, put the rest of the flashback sequence in there.

In fact, I'd put every deleted scene in there.

So there. :p

Sage, this is Superman Returns not Lord of the Rings ;) :p

Off Topic: Their releasing an EXTENDED Edition of Peter Jackson's already 3+ hour King Kong. :down

Nothing. I think it should just be added on. But, if I HAD HAD HAD HAD to....I'd cut the...I'd shorten the staff meeting scene, cut Superman catching the falling sign, and cut the preciptious drop off the waterfall of the seaplane and just have them take off....

That was such a cliche' thing to do wasn't it? It was kinda pointless.
