What's everyone's opinion on the mild banning of junk food from American schools?

As a high school teacher....less sugar is always a good thing from 12:00 -- 4:00...:)

At my old school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, we had continual trips into Hogsmeade after our third year. Honeydukes is the sweet shop everyone would go to for fudge, creamy chunks of nougat, pink squares of coconut ice, honey-colored toffees, and various types of chocolate. Absolutely delicious. The sweets and chocolate sold in america are terrible when compared to everything in Honeydukes. No wonder they are banning it.

Haha.

You are probably right, but my only point is that by high school their bad habits are already set in stone maybe even middle school but with no junk food in middle or elementary, it gives them something to look forward to in high school. Of course when i was in high school kids would just skip classes they did not like to go get food or something from a nearby gas station.

Solution to problem. Put all junk food in (unbreakable and bullet proof) vending machines that never work or never take your money.

I would like to see in each high school a Salad/Potato Bar...a regular school lunch that actually has taste...each affordable...on the Salad/Potato Bar you could have an abundance of choices...but all would be good choices. The students in my school pretty much as a majority want a Salad/Potato bar....when I was in school as an athlete depending on the sport I was playing at the time we had special diets we were on....we didn't get to make our own choice it was already set for us by our coach....I remember the football team on Friday's w/ huge amounts of pasta....it was like mountains on top of their trays....

^Most kids, even the ones that keep in shape, aren't always crazy about eating right anyway though. Some are, but most of them are about their pizza burgers, chili dogs, etc.

Some students bring lunches from home, and have sodas, candy, potato chips and some sort of sandwich. Usually.

Kids will just bring it from home

In most high school's the kids either eat what they buy there, or they don't eat at all....very few high school kids bring their lunches these days.

So like drugs, booz and cigs junk food is only good for us when were older. Odd how that works.

There are still some who do though.

Kids will still eat junk food, no matter if a school "bans" it

While I don't think banning junk food from schools will do anything to curb fat kids from getting fatter I think it's still a good thing to do in at least elementary school, leave snack vending machines in middle school and whatever junk food soda machines you want in high schools.

However, this only works if the parents get their kids outside to exercise. I remember I used to always play football, baseball and basketball in middle school and high school with friends during weekends, it was incredibly rare for me to spend a weekend day indoors at home. One summer I think I went to the pool just about every day. I still had plenty of video games during that time, but usually wouldn't last daylight playing them.

I graduated 3 years ago so I don't know if it's changed since then but I pretty much brought my lunch for my first two years (unless it was pizza day) and then for the last two I went off campus with friends to get lunch at fast food places.

My school, being "concerned with out safety", doesn't let us leave school at all during the day. Even if you're 18.

And quite frankly, having junk food isn't going to automatically ruin everyone's health. I only have 1 lunch a week because of lab periods. I'll be damned if they're not going to let me have my Friday bag of almond M&Ms.

If you drink nothing but Soda, eat nothing but junk food, then yes it's bad for your health.

However, an occasional soda or candy is not going to kill you.

Unless you have a ****ed up internal system that goes ape**** when sugar, chocolate and carbonation enter the body

Actually the vending machines for students would have chocolate...that is part of the national food service's nutrition do's.....Skittles and other candies of that type are not...

Skittles?

If it wasn't shady, scalping Skittles to kids at school would be easy money

That type of candy, like Starbursts, stuff like that....chocolate, nuts etc, have some nutritional value...so the vending machines would probably be filled w/ that, trail mix, cheese and crackers, peanut butter crackers....etc...and the drink machines, w/ lemonade, snapples drinks, water etc...

I think it should be banned in elementary school and middle school, but not in high school. However, more healthy meals should be served in high schools. At my school, they barely serve any health food. Since there's barely any healthy choices, and almost endless unhealthy choices, I end up eating more junk food than I should (I realize it's still my own fault.). It's really making me sick. >_<

There are just salads that are "healthy". But then, the lettuce is generally weeks old. And they make weird salads. E.G. romaine lettuce + brocolli + ham cubes.

The only salad I eat is a Taco Salad.

1,000 calories but it's still a salad, since it has a few leaves of lettuce

Taco salad is the legendary "good" lunch at my school. I don't know why, it always makes everyone sick. And not even normal Mexican food sick. Just genuinely ill. But there is always excitement on "Hot Taco Salad Day".

We have very little to look foward to.
