Iron Man 2

Much worse than I remember. Just a hot mess of a movie all the way around.

RDJ went from charming to completely annoying, the bad guys aren't the least bit interesting and are played only for laughs. The movie is largely boring after the first 20 minutes, the script makes no sense at all and nothing really happens in the film. There was no suspense in the entire film because Iron Man is clearly better than his villains in every way. The movie also goes out of it's way to not feature any real emotion or drama. Plus the Avenger's crap is poorly done (scar-jo and Sam Jackson are awful) and takes up time they could have been spending making a better film. Or not because the movie had even bigger problems than the Avengers commercial.

Yuck this played much worse than the first time and I didn't even like it the first time.

Rating: 4/10

I won't be watching this again, mainly because it is boring.

Das Boot - 10/10

Probably my favorite war film after Apocalypse Now. It's so unrelenting and intense and at nearly 4 hours, never boring. Quite an accomplishment.

Jarhead - 8/10

Mendes is a little bit heavy-handed as usual, but the performances and melancholy nature of the script make it an admirable film.

Kung Fu Panda 2

Loved it immensely. Haven't seen the original, but I can totally see Guillermo Del Toro's role as 'Creative consultant' on the screen. It was a visual treat and the humour was all hit, no miss.

I wish they have more of Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Damme and Dennis Haysbert, they all have distinctive voices and you could genuinely hear how much fun they where having recording their lines. Especially Chan.

Dude, you GOT TO watch the first! :wow:

I loved it. Definitely in my top five favorite CG animated movies.

Yankee Doodle Dandy. Great biopic/musical. I had never seen it before. Conan O'Brien presented it on TCM. He said it was one of his favorite movies as a kid and it inspired him to get into show business. James Cagney gave a great performance all the way around and there are a couple of very poignant scenes that really hit home for me.

Cars 2.

I actually really enjoy the first movie (I even like Mater), but this one fell a little flat for me. Way too much spy stuff, not enough story. I saw the morning show, so there were a ton of kids there, and even they seemed bored (even my nephew, who loves Cars).

The whole thing was worth it for the Toy Story short before the movie, though. Hilarious. :funny:

I'm watching Conan's lineup too; The Roaring Twenties just finished. I do love an old-school gangster movie, so this was great. Next up is Network, the only movie among these four that I've seen before tonight.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

I must say I found it much more enjoyable than the second film...maybe even the best yet...though i thought the story of the first film had a little more depth to it.

Interesting story and I liked how they tied the Transformers history on earth to the space race of the 50's and 60's. REALLY cool that they got certain famous people to play themselves. Also some clever use of archival news footage.

I just wish they had tried harder to get a certain President in the movie to look more like the real one. Not the more recent one to make an appearance

They really toned down the crass humor of Revenge of the Fallen and came up with some great action scenes

Carly was an even bigger excuse to shoot cheesecake than Megan Fox was though. Thats like the only reason she was there. her performance isn't as bad as i thought it would be but jeez she doesn't have much in the rang of facial expressions

Once again most of the Autobots and Decepticons get very little character development. its one thing I've never liked about Bays Transformers movies. Evne tbhe 86 animated movie handled character development better.

And once again there are scenes where its REALLY hard to tell whats goign on. just too much sh** happening at once that looks like a big tornado of metal and fire and I can't tell who is who in a few instances.

Cullen is once again one of the best parts of this series. GREAT as usual. Bays disinformation campaign worked. I thought Shockwave had a much bigger part. Nimoy was also fantastic. So many Star Trek references so little time! It felt good as a fan of Star Trek and Transformers to hear Nimoy and to see him return to the TF fold.

All in all I gotta admit the movie is still loud, sort of dumb, and I hate a lot of what Bay has done with the series but DOTM was fun and much MUCH better than ROTF.

I recorded Roaring Twenties and plan to watch it tomorrow. Awhile back on TCM I was able to catch Cagney's breakthrough gangster movie The Public Enemy. TCM is awesome. Wish there were more channels like it.

I definitely will. I just assumed it was one long running pop culture reference like the Shrek films.

Godzilla (1998)

Even as someone with no experience with the mythology, I didn't find this to be particularly good. It is with great regret, that we now have no chance of seeing the fantastic Jean Reno in the reboot due soon. He was by far the best part of the film.

My favourite parts of this kind of film are always the initial attack, where no one has any idea what's happening, you get shifting perspectives, you see a foot, or a tail, there's always great tension. Emmerich blew his load too quick. You have a feel for the creature too quick.

Valhalla Rising

A quiet, slow burning and eerie film. Refn hasn't disappoint me with his film yet.

4/5

The Baby's Room- I thought this would just be some forgettable horror flick, but it was surprisingly solid. Good script, good performances, and a couple of really nice scares.

Edge of Darkness (2010) I thought it was an effective, quiet, slow burn of a thriller. Mel Gibson is still a compelling on screen presence and this the type of filmmaking Martin Campbell is best at.

Sucker Punch- committed performances from all the female leads aside, this was a mess. For a movie so loud and in your face, it was awfully dull. The villain was irritating and every scene with Scott Glenn was goofy and embarrassing. The fantasy set pieces are occasionally well staged, but they have no narrative momentum and I just didn't care. They're just long, over-scored diversions.
