Yeah probably some advanced magnet type thing, sorta like Batman Begins/TDK type of gear I'd say

so a magnet.. that's great so He will get the shield back along with hundreds of other metal guns and grenades smacking him in the face as he's fighting in a war... interesting

I don't see there being any kind of "return system," he'll either catch in on a lucky rebound, or just pick it back up as he goes. I also don't think he'll throw the shield as much as he does in the comics, but definitely a few times.
