I can see cartoons. Not many. Not as much as there was in say 1991-2001 type time or maybe around the same level and I'm just not aware. 90s had light cartoons, those that stayed - but there were the darker ones as well.. Ren and Stimpy. Rocko's Modern Life. Ahh, Real Monsters! Dinosaurs (anyone who hasn't watched recently, definitely recommend - a lot of great adult humor commentary). The golden age of the Simpsons. Futurama which was later than that. Gargoyles. Batman TAS. Batman Beyond. And probably others I'm forgetting. The big one being Ren and Stimpy, we got away with that one for quite some time. Not saying all of these are "dark" just similarly metaphorically deal with adult subject matter while painted to look like kid shows...They cancelled the great Scooby Doo recent version too, I heard due to being "too dark."
So, here's the rundown. When I look back at most eras of animation, there seemed to be a lot of "bloatware" shows (ripoffs, cheaply done) and that was a consequence of the Saturday Morning blocks, which became weekday after school blocks at some point.
When that went away or shrunk to just a couple of channels, for what ever reason every cable network (even a really short-lived one) seemed to step up their game as far as "serious" written/really well animated programming.
Lemme see how this list works backwards:
-Dreamworks Dragons (ongoing)
-Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu (ongoing)
-Star Wars: The Clone Wars
-Legend of Korra
-Transformers Prime
-Kaijudo: Rise/Clash of the Duel Masters
-Beware the Batman
-Green Lantern: The Animated Series
-Young Justice
-Generator Rex
-Voltron Force
-Ben 10: Ultimate Alien
-Scooby Doo Mystery Inc
-Motorcity
-Tron Uprising
-Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes
-Thundercats
-GI Joe Renegades
-Sym-Bionic Titan
-Ben 10: Alien Force
-Secret Saturdays
-Wolverine and the X-Men
-Spectacular Spider-man
-Huntik Secrets & Seekers
this wasn't a decade, it's 5 years back-back on the best stateside Toonami line-up never devised
and there were/are even shows that dealt with "dark" or "serious" issues
-Dan Vs
-Batman: the Brave and the Bold
-The Regular Show
-Gravity Falls
-The Amazing World of Gumball
-Adventure Time
-MLP:FiM
-Pound Puppies
-Littlest Pet Shop
Again, I'm surprised you haven't caught Spooksville. Former Discovery Kids dramas would also suffice. Not in live action though... Granted I only see Disney Channel and Nickelodeon ads and not the show themselves and they seem more.... Colorful lol, hard to describe. Are there live action kid shows out now that are not over the top? Only way I know how to phrase it.
Still bummed they canceled Haunting Hour.
As bad of an idea CN Real was, there seem to have been some good scripted no laugh track action shows to come out of it, one of which Paul Dini developed.
Same goes for Nick shows that don't have a laugh track to them.

So what's your kids-related media nostalgia?
