It was just about the perfect Lex Luthor that I wanted to see in the Superman movies. Not over the top campy like Hackman's, but he could still be funny. I actually could see Rosenbaum's Luthor turning into Spacey's.

I recently watched Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (am I allowed to say that in the "Returns" forum?). I thought it toned down the camp severely. I liked Spacey's Lex, too, but I never really saw Hackman as camp until Superman IV.

Frank Gorshin as the Riddler was camp, as was most of the regular cast (why post the obvious names).

Gene Hackman played an excellent Luthor for what was the "Character" at that time.

Spacey plays an excellent Luthor for what is the "Character" at this time.

You know, as crappy as Superman IV is, there is one line in the movie that is right in line with Lex Luthor's character. It's the one bit of good writing in the whole movie.

"Nobody wants a war. I just want to keep the threat alive."

Not me. His lex was wrong wrong wrong like many things in the movie. There was absolutely no need to dig up hackman's old outdated lex and make him some sort of anna nichole smith guy. He was horribly written. I wish spacey would have told bryan to get over his donner fetish and let him do his own thing.

In my eyes, Lex Luthor should appear:
1. Confident
2. Suave
3. Powerful, even when his power is stripped from him
4. Deceitfully 'nice' (before his evil is uncovered)
5. Well-spoken, in a business sort of way
6. Ambitious

Kevin Spacey's Luthor was:
1. Confident
2. Wouldn't call him suave
3. He looked desperate
4. There's 'villain' written all over his face
5. Didn't sound like business lingo, even when he was trying to throw around a few big words
6. Overly ambitious

Grand score = 2/6

I thought he was great, and he made me absolutely hate him in the beating scene which all good villains should do.

Spacey was golden. He had that comic book Luthor charm. The pleasure he took from stabbing Superman was Luthor.

I totally agree, he was truly evil yet great to watch in that scene.

He was the joker. I don't even read the comic much and I know his portrayal was not of lex. Come on.

I've never read the comics, my knowledge of Superman comes from the movies, multiple AS's (mostly Justice League) and t.v series.

wow

dude the comics are awesome. Go download a few or something... you might like them.:supes:

Well to be honest SR has made me interested in reading them.

If you say so... just so you know in the ones I've read superman's very smart so don't expect the doofus superman or even the "swell" clark in it. Oh and The superboy's I've seen in them are either clones or in those superdickery ones where he had a kid. I don't know what those are about but maybe someone else does.

^Well i know they will be differenr than SR, but for me they probably wont be as good because i really like SR.

I like the movie but I still felt the take on Luthor was a bit too comedic. But I´m glad he was still a darker Luthor than Hackman.

I thought he was pretty good if you accept that he isn't going to be the Luthor of the modern comics plus i think towards the end he transitioned fully into a darker more menacing Lex removed from Hackman's Lex
In truth the humour was mostly sardonic IMO with only a couple of campy outbursts and the one silly wig wearing scene

to me Spacey's Lex had its good points and bad.
the good..
he was very evil and sinister, and the beating he gave supes was brutal.plus Spacey made me believe he was actually enjoying killing(almost) supes.
the bad..
a little to comedic for my taste in parts, and reminded me of hackman.

It was sort of a sinister comedy from though that i liked and felt fitted his character. I love how he turned on Lois as soon as she mentioned Superman (WWWWWWWRRRRRRRROOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGGGGG!)

Spacey had way to much screen time. I loved the way Donner used Hackman, not too much screen time so when he was in it is was effective

I'd still like to see an even less comedic Lex, and more evil, sinister person...

I disgaree.

I recently saw the Kirk Alyn serials (which were in line perfectly with the classic comics) and Lyle Talbot's Luthor reminded me of Spacey's in style, look and presense so much.

Lyle Talbot quite possibly played the most menancing Lex of them all, I hope Spacey becomes more like him in the sequel.

Spacey can be a freightening menacing bastard if directed to do so

I hope they put more focus back into Luthor being a brilliant but twisted mad scientist.

Spacey did a great job...in portraying Hackman`s Luthor who isnt the Luthor i like at all!!!!
Singer ruined Lex Luthor once more in the movies...

I thought he did a great job.
