Superman Returns Who liked Spacey's Lex Luthor?

I liked Spacey, but this isn't really the Lex I wanted to see again. I want to see a more complex Lex than just the one who wants to kill people and take over the planet. I like the Lex who doesn't think he's evil, and has a much deeper reason for hating Superman than just because he's good and Lex is evil. I like the Lex who doesn't think he's a criminal.

Spacey was alright. At least he was more bitter than the previous Lex Luthor's. But there is no doubt that he is a terrific actor, who will flourish in the upcoming films. He just needs to get to know the role more until he can cast his own shadow over the character.

Good points

I liked Kevin Spacy as Luthor. Is Kate a good Lois...no.

I think Spacey as Luthor is great fun to watch, whether he is an accurate portrayal or not.

Having rewatched it on DVD (making my third viewing) I've come to one conclusion:

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor MAKES this movie. Forget if he is the post-crisis Lex or not. HE NAILS IT. He hits it out of the park. The most entertaining scenes and the engaging ones are when he is on screen. YOu immiediately perk up when he is on screen. His charisma is great and he takes a character who begins as sheer comical entertainment and makes him truly dispicable and hatable by the end.

His scene with Lois Lane is possibly the most entertaining to rewatch in the movie but after the beating scene and watching him light a cigar to "Are you really going to kill billions of people" and say "Yes." He is just great.

I mean Routh was okay, Bosworth was okay and the pacing was disappointing but whenever Spacey was on screen the movie jumped up several notches of quality.

I wouldnt say he made the movie, as i thought Brandon was fantastic and nailed the role completely, but Spacey IS superb as Lex, as i said before, he is just great fun to watch. Plus, he truly makes you hate him during the 3rd act, which any good villain should do.

Get rid of Parker Posey's character. She was funny though.

Make Lex get serious about killing Supes. (Lex's speech in All star Supes 1)

Spacey was good though.

Um Lex was pretty damn serious about killing Superman. I mean while not as good as teh Machiavellan Lex, I don't think I've seen a more viscious attack on Supes and cruel by Lex than the one Singer shot in SR, though it was meant to be rimancient of the Passion of the Christ, so for better or worse in that regard it was made so.

But his anger htere is blinding. And yes, I found having watched it twice on DVD that besides the amazing plane sequence a lot of it just doesn't have much replay value and you lose interest. But whenever Kevin Spacey is on screen you perk up and pay attention. He is charismatic and magnetic like Lex should be. He is funny and sardonic throughout and he and Parker Posey are very fun to watch together but starting with when he is threatening Lois Lane's son with kryptonite until the end he becomes the most evil bastard in a GOOD comic book movie in a long time (Magneto, Doc Ock, Ra's, etc. even GG to an extent were made sympathetic).

P.S. While I miss the Machavellian Lex and would love to see him, I'd take Spacey's scene stealing performance over Smallville's botched poor man's version of Harry Osborn though.

I'm surprised Rosenbaum's Lex isn't taken apart by fans for not being smart.

Every Lex has had some kind of scientific smarts, but Smallville's Lex is pure businessman.

Lex in SR was LEX. No more cheesy crap Hackman.

Gene was never Lex, just some idiot with a bad 70's hair cut.

So stupid that Gene wouldn't even be bald for the whole movie, even if it was in the bald cap.

Spacey rocks as Luthor.

He's probably the dumbest business man in the world for not realizing Clark's kryptonian origins yet when all the evidence has been thrown in his face.

The one problem with his character is I hate how they write him as some kind of tool. He's always conviently evil during season finales and premieres and is usual under some kind of influence.......then his memories get erased and hes back to square one.

For Spacey, they need to play up the scientist angle more. Hopefully Brainiac is with him in the sequel and they will. I want Spacey to play it as awesome as Lyle Talbot did.

I don't mind him being more business oriented. Though the idea was obviously...."inspired" by the Kingpin at Marvel, Machiavellan Lex as the end-all businessman is one of the greatest comic book villains of all time (even surpassing Kingpin).

But a boy who is best friends with the wouldbe superhero, whose father is the secret worst enemy villain of the hero whose cruel influences will cause him to tkae over the family business and wealth to try and kill his poorer former friend....all sounds familiar. Maybe because we read it in the Spider-Man comics....then saw it on the Spider-Man cartoon....And are now watching it in the Spider-Man movies, and soon....

Meh. Just unoriginal and boring, really.

There was a time when Corperate America represented the biggest unknown threat to alot of people, during Bryne's day.

Nowadays terrorism seems to inspire alot more fear in people.

I totally agree, Spacey rocked as Lex, and i hope he returns in the sequel to reek some more havok, but hopefully with a supervillain as well.
