Ant-Man Who should direct Ant-man?

I really dont want the Rat to direct Ant Man. Anyone but him.

I didnt really know The Russos before and they did an awesome job with Cap. They have great taste in picking filmmakers (usually).

The Russo's and Joss Whedon were tv directors before getting hired by Marvel. Whedon was coming off of a flop and a failed tv show. The Russo's directed You, Me and mother****ing Dupree for Christ's sake. All of the directors hired by Marvel were coming off of flops.

Hopefully somewhere in Phase 3 (not this film) we get a POC or a woman as a director. We almost got one in Patty Jenkins, but I still hope we get one soon.

Justin Lin, James Wan, The Hughes Brothers, Antoine Fuqua, any one of them will do as POC director.

Okay. So what? How does that make him "a no style point and shoot guy that will come in and get the job done and then hand it off to the producers and editor?"

Whedon is a producer as well. Let's not forget that.

The fact Joss kind of oversees these movies (from what hes said) shows that nothing was gonna save Edgar from being tossed. He mustve discussed the movie and/or gave him notes at some point too. Edgars gone, oh well. Lets hope they get a solid filmmaker to pull it together and make a really good film.

That does not describe Joss at all.

We don't know if Edgar Wright got fired or if he quit.

The Russo's are journeymen directors who were coming off of a flop. You can control guys like that.

He's not the best visual director in the world, but he's got a pretty distinct style with his hard-on for old Hollywood style tracking shots.

I wasn't talking about the Russos, I was talking about Joss Whedon.

Yeah, but Joss is also the main guy at Marvel Studios. He (along with Feige) approve of the scripts and hand notes to the writers and directors.

I would argue that Whedon is also a journeyman with no style, he does have a signature as a writer though.

He may have no style, but again, he is one of the main guys at Marvel Studios. Him and Feige are 1 and 1A.

I know that and I like him a lot but let's not make him out to be Malick or Kubrick.

He's far from it. The point I am making is that he's not just "a no style point and shoot guy that will come in and get the job done and then hand it off to the producers and editor?" like you say that Marvel gets.

I would like to see them hire Rupert Wyatt to take over from Wright, although I think Wyatt could be taking over X-Men at Fox from embattled Bryan Singer.

I think Joss will probably try new styles with every film he does (Avengers, Much Ado, A2), Ive only seen Avengers from him, I didnt really know him before that. I think more than anything it was his writing I loved. His characters/dialogue made the movie for me. Action and visuals you can always learn/ improve on.

Whedon as a filmmaker is relative new in the business with only 3 movies. It's not to late for him to develop a signature style. It took Kubrick a lot of 'journeyman' movies to get to that point.

You should watch the Buff episodes "Restless" and "The Body." Those are the ones where he really put his director hat on.

^^ Never really watched Buffy, will try to check those out. thanks!

We're gonna get all film geeky with auteur theory talk here, but that's actually really interesting to me. Because Whedon is both a director and a writer, the waters get muddied, as you can pick out a project of his and say it has a "Whedon signature style," but then you have to question if that's coming out in the scripting rather than in the direction per se. It's also further complicated in the fact that Whedon, as a director of both film and TV, has been quite diverse in his subject matter, and has done quite starkly different things, often times some very stylish things that suggest skill, but on that level there isn't yet enough of a body of work to be picking up on directorial motifs.

"The Body", in my opinion, remains one of the single best episodes of television, any television show, EVER.
