That's very true actually. And it's sad there isn't that many good movie fitting villains left
even the better villains of Spider-man are designed very much for short episodic adventures (mostly the ones that haven't been used yet I mean). I mean, what is the movie gonna be? MacGargan becomes scorpion, Spider-man loses the first battle, wins the second one. nothing is changed, status quo continues as the same, and it just becomes another stale 300 million dollar Spidey adventure that might've been much better & more focused as a tv series episode
a Spider-man movie needs a very qualified writer that can add a lot of layers to villains that aren't that deep in the source material to begin with.
That sounds a little pessimistic! :P
As I said, I don't think Spider-Man really needs a villain of Joker's caliber (even though that would be great). There are lots of great villains, Joker just happens to be the #1 (even though I prefer Magneto, to be honest). I mean, Batman fares well with his lesser villains. I'd personally for example rank Kraven above Bane.
Marvel Studios have made great films without Joker tier villains. That goes for every studio.
I think of the ones who haven't been used yet, Kingpin, Kraven, Mysterio and perhaps Vulture could all be great villains, especially Kingpin. The others can be great if the writers just up the ante a bit, and they don't even need to change much (just add a little). Not to mention that there's now been more than 10 years since we've seen Doc Ock. I'm all for him to return.
Marvel Studios have made films that truly are all about the heroes and that concept has worked great so far with only a few exceptions.
