Who will bring the humor in the MOS sequel?

Alone that "Careful, it's heavy." made me chuckle. There are funny moments, just not hit you in the face with a shovel kind of funny.

Yeah and that's what I prefer

As long as Lex doesn't act like a comedic fool in MOS 2, I'm fine.

He won't. They will stick to what worked in MOS; the absence of Marvel humor is one of those things. When I am watching a Marvel movie I expect some action and fun but nothing serious; I expect more from a DC movie.

Marvel comics and their characters have traditionally been funnier than DC, so to that point, I'd agree. I don't expect DC characters to be as funny or humorous as Marvel.

Still doesn't mean you have a straight up serious film. MOS had the least amount of humor in any CBM I've seen. Now what I'd expect DC to be along the lines of TDK....that was a dark, bleak, gritty crime drama, but had lots of humorous moments to break up the darkness and the grittiness.

Marvel does audience applause/canned laughter kind of stuff, it feels like a sitcom sometimes and seems like there should be huge "Laugh Now!" signs lighting up in the theatre. Granted some of the set pieces and character interplays are really hilarious ("His secrets have secrets"), for what MoS was trying to achieve the understated and more subtle humorous moments worked well.

What do you guys think of the Trek movies' humor? I personally wouldn't mind it if MOS was similar.

I think the tone here is totally different. That said, I just hated the humor in the first Star Trek movie. At one point (giant hands) it felt like a stupid big-budget space sitcom. I liked the second one much more though.

Marvel is not as forced sitcom as the films have become. But the films still can hit the right note with the right direction.

I didn't HATE the humor of Trek09, but I don't want Superman to anywhere near that offbeat. The second was more balanced, IMHo.

Didn't people find GPS Russell Crowe/Jor-El guiding Lois through the ship funny?

The sort of humour from Marvel appeals to wider audiences, girls, parents, etc. so they'll do better at the box office. But the tension of the tone that MOS brings has a longer lasting impact on you as a movie goer. Frankly, I will remember MOS and the sense it brought to me much longer than IM3, Avengers, etc.
It had a far bigger emotional impact.

That got a chuckle in my showing. I liked that one.

Also as mentioned in here when Superman's powers come back on the Black Zero and the truck being smashed up. Ma Kent's "nice suit son". The "kinda hot" line got a laugh, as did the army dude's line about how much the drone/satellite cost.

I don't get the humor complaint.
When I want laughs I go see a comedy. I really don't get it. We go to superhero movies because of the drama and the action, the characters, right? I don't need laughs in there. For me, those "funny" scenes in Batman Begins and Dark Knight for example, really took me out of the movie (like when the Batpod destroys the sidemirror of the car when the guy is picking his teeth, or the kids who shot fingerguns at the cars).
Humor is also the reason why I never feel fully invested in Marvel movies (apart from Spider-man), because as soon as it plays like a comedy it looses almost all tension and drama for me.

Man of Steel was perfect in that regard. It was no comedy, but I was smiling all the way through, since it was hopeful and fun, without winking at the audience. I really hope they keep that tone. There is no need to copy the comedy style Marvel does, especially when DC wants to differentiate themselfes.

Sure, the humor fits with Iron Man and Spidey, but Superman is not a jokey character, so I am glad there is not that much humor.
In the end I can only take a movie as serious as it takes itself and therefore enjoyed MoS much more than all Marvel movies, as much as I liked them.
MoS had me at the edge of my seat in the final fight and when the thing happened I was in shock! It was great! That can never happen in a Marvel movie, just as it cannot happen in a comedy.

So, no. No more comedy than in the first film.

Good post.

"Gus" Gorman. He'll bring the comedy in the sequel.

Was I the only one that laughed out loud at the polar bear?

I would love to see a moment at the DP, where Clark has something happen that would really suck for a mortal (filing cabinet falls on him, etc.), and he forgets to feign pain. Or maybe awkwardly does so, to avoid plot holes.

But I suppose that falls under "DP humor" category.

And maybe it's happened already....

Blockbuster movie have to be a little bit of everything. Without good Hurmor the GA will lose interest and start to slip into a mini depression while watching the movie. The movie doesn't have to be a series of jokes like Ironman 3 but It needs a good bit of comic relieve. Build serious tension and the relieve it every once in a while. It's all about dynamics.

You're absolutely right., I know what those who want a mostly serious film are saying, if you want a comedy, go watch a comedy, but you need balance. Some moments are so heavy and serious, you need a break from all of that. It just makes the film that much more enjoyable.

We've cataloged most of the funny moments in TDK, but not one of us would ever think for a second this is a comedy or anything like Iron Man 3. But it has a lot of well-placed humorous moments that allow the audience a breather, and that's why it remains one of the top CBMs.

I personally found the Trek movies to be more hilarious than most of the Marvel movies, and I loved them. Just because a movie is serious, doesn't mean it's more profound. And a funny move doesn't mean it's all fluff either. I think creating funny moments that are genuinely funny is very hard, and I always respect a movie that can make me laugh. For me, it's always the lighter and funnier movies that I watch over and over. I really enjoyed DK and DKR and even have DK on bluray but I have never gotten to urge to watch either of them again. I actually feel Superman lends himself to the feel good tone of the Marvel movies more; he is supposed to be a beacon of hope and a reflection of goodness in people. I didn't feel like MOS was as bleak as many are making it out to be though.

Yes. I think the best way to describe MOS is dark-ish. It ends with a sense of hope, it has good character moments, and you feel like Superman cares for Earth above himself. The narrative is more intense than brooding.

On the other hand, a lot of dark things happen, and portions of Metropolis are reduced to rubble. Add in very few one-liners, and people start complaining that Superman's been Batmanized.

I don't think one-liners is the kind of humor anyone wants to see. That sort of humor was funny back in the 80s with Schwarzenegger and Stallone movies.

True humor that blends perfectly in with a great story line and fascinating well drawn characters....that's what we want to see.
