Why Can't DC Get it right?

Its easy to think 2011 will over-saturate the superhero genre. But with Thor, GL and Cap its new Hollywood material, its not like next summer we have too many sequels.

Marvel did beat DC at Comic Con with the movies. Its still Marvel having all the fun pumping up the Avengers. Perhaps WB/DC is just seeing how GL does before all the other characters other than Superman and Batman start showing up in live action. But I thought it was supposed to be when we get to hear about the release slate of DCE film properties. Instead we get the same answer, nothing yet.

Yeah Geoff Johns has more work to do if he still writes comics but DCE could use his help getting characters out of development hell, he does have a film background. But hey, I guess the GL movie will be similar to Secret Origins and Geoff is a co-producer/consultant.

On Geoff Johns' IMDb page he's listed in the "In Development" sections for "The Flash," "Shazam," and "Metal Men"

I was aware of The Flash. Anyone know anything about Shazam or Metal Men getting movies? I know Shazam got canceled a little while back but are there new rumblings?

BTW, they shouldn't make Geoff Johns as chair of the movie project. Hire someone else not busy with the comic writing/editorials.

It was cancelled then Geoff Johns was announced last year as producer for the new 'take' on the film.

Hawkman is just continuity mess. Plus, his only real general audience exposure was that series of commercials where he was basically ******ed. I forget the product that was advertised...

Pretty much why I suggested Hawkworld. It takes place completely on Thanagar and is deep sci-fi stuff. You can pretty much take everything you know about Hawkman, throw it out of the window and prepare to be entertained. The book has tons of political overtones, corruption and is downright gritty. I remember reading this book backin the late 80’s and it has always stuck with me. It is pretty much the only Hawkman story I have ever truly enjoyed.

The idea of a Hawkman movie happening within this story is super attractive, mainly because it does not have to interact with the rest of the DC film continuity at all. It can just stand on it’s own.

For those who have not read this 3 book miniseries I highly recommend picking it up.

Actually Hawkman can do alright if it's told as an eternal love story. Get that Twilight guy and another chick - whammo! instant hit.

picking it up where?? I buy my trades from various places and have never seen it on any shelf

I'd buy it to check it out but I ain't paying more than 10 or 12 bucks for it

I think John's is perfect for the job because he knows them and sincerely cares for them. So if anyone should have gotten the job, it's John's! He's busy writing that's true, but he is also a DC geek and try his all to get them on film without straying to much from the comics.

Good book...the problem being that it is basically out of continuity at this point. The current story of Hawkman (if I recall) actually says that the Hawkman from Thanagar was a spy...and the true Hawkman is an earthling.

From what I have seen with comic book adaptations so far, mainstream continuity has never been that much of a factor.

yeah, but in this case it's a major factor...

Either Hawkman is the reincarnated spirit of an Egyptian pharoah eternally in love with his wife and righting wrongs...or he is an alien from another galaxy that was exiled for going against the system. I mean...those two characters are so different that it makes no sense to promote one in a major film and then have the other in comics.

REBOOT! I say the reincarnation of a pharaoh cursed to eternally fall in love with his wife, meanwhile he's a hero. Before facing the villain he meets her, impending DOOOOOOM! Then have the comics reflect the pharaoh storyline. It's not like anybody will sorely miss the current Hawkman in comics.

Personally I like the alien angle. A crossover would most likely not be in the mix but if they did decide to go that route Green Lantern would be a great vehicle for it if they went that way.

In any case, Hawkman is a B list character so what they decide to promote is on little consequence. The effectively fused both ideas in the Justice League cartoon so it is doable with an imaginative writer.

They should have just let Zauriel be Hawkman...

I'm fine with whatever DC wants to do...but pick a Hawkman and stick with it...the reincarnated angle could be really cool. It's kind of a shame that the best Hawkman story contradicts that concept.

Iron Man was a B list character as well.

The problem is that...with the exception of nonsense like Heroes Reborn and the teenage time-traveling Tony Stark...Iron Man is a simple character.

If a Hawkman movie ever happened, DC would have to finally make a commitment on what Hawkman is.

And I think people would assume that the wings are a part of him, not technology that can be removed at any time with a buckle.

In Nolan’s Batman he set up a movie in which the rest of the DCU does not even exist. Superman has a kid… who knows what they are doing with GL. Then you have twists in the animated stories. Bottom line is it can be done and regardless of how they do it, fans of that character will come back and new ones will be born.

Marvel fused mainstream continuity and ultimate. Writers and the comic houses will continue to allow these films to stand on their own independently of the comics.

How about writing him as a grumpy late middle aged man stuck in a sitcom in an imaginary city, named after an imaginary town in Kansas (an actual state)!

They could give him "five o'clock shadow" and "whoooosh" around so quick you only see a blur!

Um ... wait, isn't that the Flash's power?

I know, have Nolan make it!
