Why do some members continually discuss movies they hate?

So, you dispute the accuracy? What exactly was wild, except for being a digression?

"That’s a metaphor, son! You missed it! It flew right by ya!".

Anyways, I don't dispute anything at all. I just don't see your need to bring up ****ing Shakespeare way more in depth than it's intended metaphorical purpose?

Spirited debates are one thing. Some people just don't know when it's time to move on. If you live in a certain thread *****ing about how much you hate something, adding nothing to the overall conversation, and saying the same thing over and over again for months (let's be real, this is the Hype! so we're actually talking years in some case) then you're just choosing to be miserable.

Some debates are pointless but most of the time it's people arguing about what makes these characters special.

And if in all that debate we find more things about these characters that have been underexposed and under-appreciated then maybe it's worth it.

Sure, but most likely no.

I got the metaphor. I was just pointing out that the metaphor stated in this thread was an inaccurate metaphor. What don't you understand about that?

Which is perhaps also a point that people discussing the "mainstream" are making claims that aren't actually backed up by reality. Like you have to be some sort of elitist to get Shakespeare, when millions of high schoolers read Shakespeare every year. Or that the mainstream will lap up any old thing because it has big explosions. We should be willing to look at ideas, art, etc. with a critical mind without falling into lazy stereotypes. Sometimes that will create conflicts, but if you can backup your argument, then interesting discussions can emerge. Sometimes the "unconventional" can be surprisingly conventional when you really examine it. Nobody, should get too complacent in their arguments that they can't examine a counter-argument with an open mind.

Bro you need to chill.

Bro you need to chill.

I'm perfectly chill. What's your issue?

I made a digressive point, granted, but it was based on something someone said in the topic. A point you haven't disagreed with and which is perfectly harmless. But, what are we really going to get out of the thread, except "it's okay to disagree, just don't be disagreeable" and "bland concensus is boring"? So why not digress?

Heck, I'm not convinced that we do disagree which is ironic given this thread.

But, yeah, I think we've both wasted enough people's time.

Sure, but most likely no.

I think a gradual increase in appreciation goes unnoticed but much of the time, it's there.

The problem is not all movies appreciate over time and some people's feelings get hurt over it.

Why else would people be so uncomfortable about debates that happen in threads that they can easily ignore.

Once again, I'm not talking about simple debates, and I don't think Cyclops is either. There's a stark difference.

It's kind of like watching Fox News or MSNBC. Sure, it's another viewpoint but is it really necessary viewing? Nah. But just like those networks, it can be easily ignored like you said. But sometimes there's only so much ignoring you can do.

Welcome to The Hype! :awesome:

These boards thrive on debate; debating those who hate a certain film series I like - soon to be a trilogy- made me realize how much I love the films, and why the are superbly made, as I have to articulate what makes them expertly made. Debates are healthy for the dialogue on the worth of a film.

Are you referring to the Hobbit movies, if I may ask?

It's not that hard to avoid pundit news stations or fanboy debate threads.

The issue could be that some people enjoy civil debates but they don't enjoy the opposition that comes along with any debate.

I guess some of us develop thick skin over time.

I enjoy debating because it clarifies and develops my position in ways I usually don't forsee.

I get what the OP is saying. There seems to be certain users who get off on it. Not just posting that they don't like something, but continuing to remind people over and over again that they don't like something. And as the OP says, often it's before they even see a lick of footage.

The one thing I have to point out that CyclopsWasRight might have been referring to in his first post is that some of us are sick of people who complaint too much. Debating anything is always good and as you said, it makes everyone smarter. Always good to hear another person's point of view, especially when it comes to literature and film, people can make you see things in a different light or help you catch things you might have missed the first time.

Personally, I don't like when the same person or people stay in a thread for a long period of time just to shut down other's positivity. The door swings both ways of course, we all know that the larger group are the positive fans that try to shut down those with negative opinions but there's a point where some negativity goes too far to where(and I've called a few people out on this)some fans act like the director or the movie itself slept with their mom. As annoying as overly positive fans can be at times, I think in a lot of cases, dare I say most, positivity trumps negativity in life and it's just a downer to see this or that poster just slam a film over and over and over again. At least the ones who don't have much constructive criticism.

The OP is obviously not talking about healthy debates.

I think CyclopsWasRight was just trying to make a point of certain users that constantly hate on almost every thread, just for the fun of it.

Bingo that's my point, about those who go above and beyond the usual, more acceptable dislike and debates and are just solely negative 100% of the time.

I like spirited debates, they're interesting and fun, constructed criticism is also good, even unconstructed criticism is okay to a point, but my point is about those who make it their job to hate on things and do it for months beyond most others. I see no benefit or need for such continuance.

Not just here, but I've seen it elsewhere too.

Some people do get overboard about it. It's like they're trying to convince a movie's fans that they didn't really like it, or trying to talk them out of liking it.

I've seen quite a bit of that. Trying to convince others to like a movie you like or hate what you hate doesn't really work, people are different and will like what they like, they aren't wrong in that regard.

It's not just super hero forums. People respond differently to negative events than they do positive events.

A guest at a restaurant is more likely to complain about service when they had a disappointing experience than give a compliment when they had a great server.

If you're in sales and you count on surveys to get your bonus, you can guarantee that customers that leave the store 100% satisfied may forget to turn in their survey while the ones who had issues will be ready to rate you down as soon as they get home.

Likewise, when a fan goes to see a movie of a beloved franchise and they leave the theater disappointed...they are going to get online and complain when they get home. The disappointment also sticks around longer than the excitement would have if they loved it.
