Why does every sword & sorcery movie other than LOTR suck?

I was simply responding to who mentioned the Bible in their post. Also, asking or expecting a practicing Christian to separate or extract himself from his faith is rather pointless.

Still doesn't mean that you have to name-drop God in every conversation.

Anyways, my thoughts on why many movies of the fantasy genre have sucked after LotR came out is because they're trying to outdo LotR at it's own game, and seeing as how high quality the Rings trilogy was, it's not an easy feat at all.

I think a lot of people overlook how much hard work went into making "Conan the Barbarian" the good film that it is.

I like "Willow". First movie I ever saw in a theater.

"Stardust" was good, having more of a "Princess Bride" kind of feel to it.

In case you weren't aware, J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic, and although he avoided allegory, it's very easy to spot the Judeo-Christian themes present in his work, both written and cinematic. The same holds true for C.S. Lewis, who grew up as a professed atheist, but accepted Christ later in life, just prior to starting the Narnia Chronicles. The two men were good friends, and both were apparently believers when they penned their famous works. The main difference is that Lewis wrote intentional allegory, while Tolkien preferred applicability.

Chronicles of Narnia was a great movie. Much better than Harry Pothead

CON is an awesome movie and book, but let's not knock HP either. HP is great as well, of course not to the extent of the world of Narnia but very good nonetheless.

i need to see where narnia goes from here....
because the first harry potter movie was bad as well...

hopefully it picks up speed and gets a new director after the second one.

I think that is a subjective thing. As a Christian and someone who has grown up with Narnia, I could definitely see the allegorical themes. Yet, there are those I know who aren't very religious who didn't really notice the allegorical content.

Unless you actually go to church on the constant, you wouldn't even think about Narnia being remotely religious. It's just a fantasy tale for the most part. It got attention because Lewis wrote it as allegory and the media hyped that up. They forced you to feel it had religious tones.

Well, I didn't think the first HP was bad, but Narnia is off to a stronger start with The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Now, they already have a different director locked in for The Voyage of the Dawn Treader which may be a good or bad thing for some.

Also, Prince Caspian should have a darker tone than LWW, as it was a slightly darker story.

There are 7 books. As long as the next two films do considerably well financially then they will continue on with the rest of the books.

Andrew Adamson refers to it a few times in the DVD features of LWW. The carvings on the wardrobe itself also hint at that part of the story.

Well, as far as I know, I'm no religious person (by any book at least) but the allegory smacked me right in the face - the whole Christmas thing, Santa Claus and the constant Jesus hints. Very obvious.
But my main grudge wasn't with that. Instead I couldn’t bear with the overall adolescent overtone - send a kid to do a man’s job…bleah. And no one really dies anyway. Meh, just an overblown bedtime story.

It makes better impact, if the theme of the movie is about sword fighting and epic battles. You got to show kids the consequence of violence and the inevitability of death. Otherwise all this bloodless action we’re getting lately in big budget films is just a brainwashing attempt to turn our children into violent delinquents.
