Why does every sword & sorcery movie other than LOTR suck?

The Question should be "Why does every sword & sorcery movie other than CONAN suck?"

But my main grudge wasn't with that. Instead I couldn’t bear with the overall adolescent overtone - send a kid to do a man’s job…bleah. And no one really dies anyway. Meh, just an overblown bedtime story. :whatever:

Well, you have to understand it was a children's story, it's not meant to be overly dark. Although, Prince Caspian should prove to be a bit darker.

The hobbits in the movies did seem partially gay but ironically Peter Jackson omitted the phrase "queer" from the entire trilogy, a word that JRR Tolkein used to describe the hobbits in almost every other page in the book.

Rotflol, there's also a passage in there about "tossing fagots onto a fire." :woot:

I was simply responding to who mentioned the Bible in their post. Also, asking or expecting a practicing Christian to separate or extract himself from his faith is rather pointless.

So...there's not a point in your life where you can't just shut up about it? Damn, if your god's real, he should've had some consideration for us and gave you people an off switch or a mute button or something.

If The Golden Compass is, in any way, as good as the book, then it will be a thousand times better then LOTR and just about every other fantasy movie ever made. EVER.

I never read The Golden Compass, but I saw the trailer and it looked very good. I'm actually looking foward to seeing it.

Well, as I said, Harry Potter, Princess Bride and the like all were children stories but they were written and acted in such a way so that people of all ages could appreciate them - like an adult theme spun in a naïve way. The purpose of this is so those movies would still maintain some value after their viewers grew up.
Eragon and Narnia do not have that in my opinion. Just like the Teletubies, Sesamy Street and all the $hit Nickelodeon releases.

I don't see why people of all ages can't enjoy CON. Not everything has to have an overly dark tone for it to be good. Just because it wasn't to your liking doesn't make it so for everybody else.

There is no way that The Golden Compass is anywhere near as good as LOTR. LOTR is considered some of the best fantasy written, Pullman's work is lackluster to say the least and the second and especially third books in his trilogy are a mess.

:whatever: If you don't like it, ignore it. Everyone has their point of view in life and when someone cares about something it usually influences their daily life.

Well first of all, by 'mature' I never meant 'dark'. I don't know where you got that idea from. :)
LotR was never overly dark.
And second - of course I was only talking about my opinion alone. And it’s just that I like my works of fiction, specifically fantasy, to last even after I’m past 40.
Narnia and Eragon are written in such a way that every time I hear a character from those movies speak I think: “That’s stupid…” as opposed to the childish ‘Hobbit moments’ of LotR or Princess Bride, where I think: “That’s silly…but fun.” :p

I'll give you Eragon, lol, but CON is a masterpiece...at least to me. Then again, the CON series is probably my favorite work of fiction so I am biased. :woot:

What makes Harry Potter, a book for kids, appealing to adults? It is the dark, angsty material. It just is. It's got a wholesome side, but the **** gets dark and disturbing later on in the series. That's why so many older folks are into it, point blank.

It doesn't have to have an overly dark tone, just a tone that doesn't make my roll my eyes and groan at the screen at the cheesy s**t being put in front of me. Then again, I'm kinda a cynical bastard, so...:o

LOTR was an extremely lackluster series, with characters I really couldn't give a crap about with scenes and descriptions so agonizingly boring and erronious I tossed the book away many times to keep me from burning it.

His Dark Materials, on the other hand, had original ideas and great characters I actually gave a crap about, in a epic battle that made me stay up many a night to finish. Plus it had talking, armored polar bears. ANYTHING with talking, armored polar bears is badass in my eyes.

We will have to agree to disagree because your descriptions are reversed in my opinion regarding these stories.

Fare enough. :cwink:

Damn...if I'll like the movie, I'll have to get the book.
And I'd have to agree with you somewhat on the LotR books. I barely managed to read through Fellowship for a whole year. And I'm still not through even half the Two Towers. There are just far more engaging books for me to read...

But the movie trilogy still rocks! And I’m all about movies! :woot:

Did anyone like Dragonheart?

...you know, the one with Sean Connery as the dragon?

If future Harry Potter films were like the graveyard scene in Goblet of Fire, I'd be all for them. Too bad, I didn't like the last one.

I actually enjoyed that movie. It wasn't a classic by any means but a pretty good movie.

Fair enough. I will say though: Regardless if you liked or dispised the books, you have to admit a warrior tribe of talking, armored polar bears is cool as all hell. :word:

The Golden Compass trailer looked lame to me.

I'm still waiting on the 'next' LOTR, not in terms of story, but scale, quality, and epicness.

in lotr i guess they shot all the movies back to back over the course of a year . very rare
