I personally feel no attachment to the MCU. The success is mostly contributable to RDJ and Whedon more recently, and Favreau in the past, who was shown the door soon after. That's not to say they haven't brought in ancillary talent, but these directorial choices are pissing me off to no end. Joe Johnston for Cap? That dude has NEVER made a film that stands out as something truly unique, maybe Rockateer but certainly not a film that most people fondly remember. Branagh had his hands cuffed for Thor I felt. Everything has just been super bland and forgettable. I have no desire to see any MCU movies again, aside from Avengers and that's because that truly is a classic popcorn movie. The rest is forgettable, generic garbage as far as I'm concerned.
X-2 and FC are movies I can watch over an over again for some reason. It stands out to me. They touch on the deeper themes of inequality and alienation from society, and that is what every X-Men movie is ultimately about. Even Nolan's trilogy, while not the crowd pleaser that carries top notch entertainment value from repeat viewing, maintains the subtleties and nuances in the story telling while hammering out the heavier themes. It doesn't play the audience for fools like Thor and Cap did as mere setups for the Avengers. My fear is DoFP may turn into a mere popcorn crowd pleaser without hammering home any deeper themes or provactive sci-fi ideas or concepts, but I have the utmost faith that Singer can deliver. I don't get why people are raving about the Thor and Cap sequels on the other hand. Just looks like more of the same. Throw ScarJo in some tight leather and give her pistols, put Portman in as another damsel in distress, and the MCU fanboys are convinced they have something special brewing.
