Why is there a The Land Before Time television series?

I would defend the original movie all day, but why does this show exist? I haven't seen it yet (and I don't plan to), but the direct-to-home-video-release movies got so bad...I can only imagine what the show would be like...how can kids these days watch that?

The original movie was actually very good. Solid, detailed animation, a powerful story, and interesting characters--all with Spielberg and Lucas' names attached as producers. The rest...yeah, I guess money.
