Will Hulk Bo Gross Change Marvels Plans?!

I loved the incredible hulk, and i told my friends to see it, and they loved it. I think why its not a big opening is because, truths, many didn't know what to expect from this movie after the 2003 hulk. Also, compared to iron man or the dark knight, this is the least hyped superhero movie this summer. All i have to say is if you're going to the movie theatre, and you have a choice between this movie, get smart, and the love guru, see the incredible hulk, because you wont be wasting your time or money imo.

Damn near all the critics love it, and people who've seen it have loved it too; so why isn't it making more money?

Maybe it's a situation where some don't feel they have to see the movie more than once.

I think he means the scene when Hulk throws the rock at the sky when the lightning strikes when he's with Betty.

I think you hit it on the nose...I've only seen three movies more than once,in m movie going life...:woot:

Aliens,The X-Files(yeah..I know) and The Transformers.

If I had enough time I would have went to see Iron Man again but as far as seeing the Hulk again....probably not.. plus it cost $10.00 to see a movie around here.....and that's gas money.....and with (action movies) Hancock,Wanted and The Dark Knight are like back to back releases...so folks will probably wait for The Incredible Hulk DVD or Blu-ray.Expect those sales to be crazy....he'll do better on disc anyways...

Marvel is no writing out The Incredible Hulk he is a part of Avengers as much as Wolverine is an x-men. Sorry no Hulk will be in Avengers atleast and Avengers has Cap and Iron Man. People will see this and looks like Downy is into playing Stark for the long haul.

I didn't like neither Ironman nor the Hulk movies. I'm dying for The Dark Knight though, that will truly rule them all.

:word:You know you make a really good point about gas money! It def is a factor! Also the price of a movie ticket is **** ridicoulous!!! If Marvel was smart they would make this a double feature it would help Hulk and IM. Not the IM needs it.!!The fact is right now most families just don't have the disposable income right now!

TIH is at (about) 100 mil gross already. I think Ang's Hulk kind of poisoned the well, but the word of mouth on the new one is great and people are slowing getting up to go and see it. So it will make enough to warrant a sequel.

I think, personally, it's the competition.

Iron Man didn't have the same competition and made the majority of its gross before Indiana Jones came out.

Hulk instantly had competition from the Happening, then Get Smart and Love Guru, and Kung Fu Panda is doing well in theaters, next week with Wall-E and Wanted.

Batman on July 18 will be extremely successful because of the release date and lack of competition (and the fact that the movie looks very good).

June is just a very crowded month and Hulk is doing well compared to other movies released at this time -- just not Iron Man good.

Agreed.

I also believe that both Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk will do great when it is released on DVD.

To the OP:

Why would they change thier plans? TIH isn't bombing and it's a great movie. When it's all said and done, they'll have reached or come very close to their budget domestically. Add in the B.O. from overseas, merchandise, videogame sales, the tv deals with HBO and FX and that's more dough coming. Oh and I guarantee they'll clean house with the DVD and Blue-ray sales and rentals.

I don't think TIH box office will so much change Marvel's plans, as underline why they should stick with the original plan, i.e. keep the budgets reasonable. Marvel can probably make a reasonable profit with not too much risk on $150 million movies, but if they go in budgeting a movie needing Iron Man returns to make a profit they're likely to have problems.

If anything, they may wish to reconsider the release date in marketing and in regards to competition. It might be that they need more separation distance for marketing between movies. Marvel might have done better bookending the summer with Iron Man in May and TIH as the last blockbuster, with several more months of advertising, in early August.

I agree it is def better to go with a May release than further in to Summer. There is just too much competition during that time. Especially now! The release date has to be flexible we don't want it against Potter or the Hobbit. Also start the marketing early on like they did for IM. I think they waited too long to really push the Hulk properly. I would also get ILM next time instead of current CGI. They just did a better job IMHO.

It also brings to light that a "do-over","re-do",oops...we are gonna recast and try again.Might not be in Marvel's best interest...I'm pretty sure they are looking at the revenue "The Incredible Hulk" did...and are very disappointed it didn't do better.
You know better cast, better script and better CGI.....
So...with all the fanboys (myself included) that would love a DO-OVER on Daredevil,Elektra and (some) Fantastic Four....I don't think it's gonna happen.

Seriously.

I hate the knee-jerk reactions people have when a film doesn't shatter every record on opening weekend. TIH has done well, probably as well as Marvel had hoped, if not a little better. They are absolutely content with the TIH box office, and for any one who still believes that the Hulk was somehow a failure? Check this out:

What ever way you slice this, Marvel will make more money from this Hulk than the 03 version. There will be a sequel.

thanks for the info. Gonna post this at the Hulk board.

I sure as heck hope this doesn't affect the sequal or the Avengers. I loved the IHM.

The movie was very good and its getting word of mouth support. A second hulk movie will do better. Now that the stigma from ang lees hulk is gone

Hulk is doing mediocrely at the box office. So what? it would have to be an absolute disaster and create huge losses for Marvel Studios to be affected... especially after the gigantic success of Iron Man.

Common sense here; two Hulk movies, two attempts to make a huge hit, two very expensive movies. Neither is a blockbuster. Marvel spend five years convincing investors that a second Hulk movie will make more than the first, and low and behold, it doesn't.

Two strikes and you're out.

I agree with you Kevin. I do think that after the international figures and DVD sales are final, TIH will make more then 2003's, but just slightly. For some reason, the public doesnt go ga-ga over the jade giant. I always wondered why. he has the best story line in the sense that he DOESN'T want to be a hero.

Seeing as how a.) the response has been better and b.)It has made more than it costed, I wouldnt say that it has "tanked" or "bombed." It was a sucess, IMO. Not earth shattering, like Iron Man, but a sucess nonetheless.

voice of reason.

Three things happened:
Ang Lee
Bad marketing
Movie isn't really good

I thought it was 3 strikes then your out?

Credit Crunch Hits Hollywood
In a major setback, Paramount Pictures was forced to step back from a film financing package worth $450 million, as the credit crunch has landed square in the American entertainment industry.
The fund, which would have had the backing of Deutsche Bank, would have financed close to 30 films if it had went through..
Evidently the major impediment to the closing of the deal was the senior debt component, which wasn't embraced by the market. Unless a deal involves triple-A rated credit, the industry is backing away from deals. Paramount doesn't reach that level, and so the deal was squelched.
With the failure to make a deal, Deutsche has closed down its film financing division to pursue more sure categories.
While the bank put together all the equity and junior debt needed, the failure to secure senior debt told them there aren't going to be deals put in place in the film industry in the current credit market; thus exiting the business.
