321 pages? How long did it take you to write this? And why did you do it?
It took my quite awhile, but I knew the angle I wanted to take on the story, so everything came rather easily. It's more character driven than anything, just like Singer wanted Returns to be, it's just a different take. And yes, there are super fights between Superman and Metallo. Ive actually taken critiscm for making Metallo to " scary ". Well, I did draw my inspiration from the original Terminator, I even have a homage scene in there, and my Luthor is a reflection of all the backstabbing, two-faced politicians and quasi-terrorists who are ruining this world. Lex is basically a terrorist who fronts with a billion dollar company that practically owns Metropolis, including the Daily Planet.
I did this because, well, I was un-satisfied with Bryan Singer digging up the bones of the Donner film when there are so many more angles you take with the character. I wanted an updated version of the character, more along the lines of the comics and the world today. I was unsatisfied with what Singer was doing, and then when I read the comics might reflect Singer's movie, I wrote my script as a way to deal.
And yes, you will see Clark Kent as the real man in my script, with Superman being a symbol for the world. The theme of Batman Begins was fear, the theme of my Superman script is Hope. A well meaning, kind hearted farmboy who happens to have the powers of a god decides to make a difference in the world. The world fears Superman at first, being that he is a flying alien in a red cape and that is how the real world would react, with fear. And America loves Lex Luthor, who is two timing the US behind there back by funding terrorist attacks, all the while so Lex can upstage the President and win office. There is one person who stands by Superman's side and helps him win over the people, and in the end defeat Luthor, and thats Lois Lane. By the end, everything is set in it's rightful place with Superman flying high as Earth's champion.
I do happen to end the life of one of the Kents, but it's not the one you would think!
And that Terminator homage features Metallo laying waste to a police station that had incriminating evidence about Luthor, while Superman is flying around the world helping people. Yes, Superman leaves Metropolis in my script as well.
And if you think Superman got a beatdown in Returns, you have no idea how far I take it with Metallo. I want to make people cry for Superman. You see, I DON'T want people to like the villians, at all. I hate that about Donner's Superman and I hate that about Returns, they think it's ok to make the villian funny and amusing to the audience. It's not ok in my eyes.
