The Dark Knight Rises Will this movie break the trilogy curse?

I've got nothing but faith. Nolan hasn't steered me wrong yet. I actually believe he has a story to tell, and has an interest in further exploring and expanding on the characters and themes he introduced in BB. I think we as fans have no idea what's really in store for us in this movie, and that uncertainty is making people doubtful, and I get that. I'm just excited for it. As a movie fan and as a Batman fan. I believe in The Dark Knight Rises.

I'm going to say no. This movie is hyped beyond belief that either it wont be judged fairly or people will defend it no matter what. But with the hype surrounding Nolan I think this will be the opportunity for a lot of people to tear him down from the ridiculous pedestal people have placed him on. I can also see the reaction to the movie being "thats it". Then for years to come people will talk of how he was the worst director and retroactively go back to say how bad BB and TDK were. lol. thats the cycle.

Honestly.... I kind of agree. TDK was a surprise in many ways. Nolan took BB, and amped up the energy and tension several times over. It was such a huge surprise and such a huge success, that now people have unrealistic expectations.
Not to mention Nolan is just off of Inception, a movie he had a lot personally invested in. If you couple that with the fact that TDKR is a movie he was somewhat obligated to do... there's a real potential he could sputter out on this one.
If that happens, my only hope is that he isn't overly chastised for letting people down. No matter what, he gave us The Prestige: one of the best damn movies of the past two decades.

Why do you find this hard to believe? Both are drastic visual departures from the comics.

Because he's a big fan of Batman Returns which has a drastic physical and characterization departure of the Penguin.

Hathaway's Catwoman is not a drastic visual departure from the comics. She just needs a cat mask to complete the costume which is visually spot on from the neck down.

Wow Marx, you really dislike BOTH of them?

I am honestly dumbfounded by Nolan's costume decisions on this movie. It's the same story with Bane man. Catwoman is not Catwoman without the mask and ears. Are you (not you specifically, but you in general) really going to tell me that someone won't recognize her as Selina when all she's wearing is an oversized pair of sunglasses? I'm just hoping that this isn't the final costume for her...

I am such a huge Batman fan and have been really looking forward to TDKR...but I keep being disappointed by these "reveals". :csad:

I understand your concerns about Catwoman, but word has it we are getting a cat mask. It's on the Batman news website run by Chris B. He said he's been told she's getting a proper mask. Her goggles alone certainly wouldn't conceal her identity.

Well is it just the villains you've been disappointed by? (I know they are pretty huge factors in the movie, so I don't mean just just when I say that ;))

If I like the movie thats the important thing but just looking at everything released with this film its under the microscope. I mean just the title alone got ridiculed, as if batman begins was somehow this amazing title.
I just think what happened to raimi (not that spider-man 3 was good, just mediocre) will happen here.

Not that I really care whether its true or not, but these rumours always pop up when people don't like the costume, most of the time it doesn't change.

Yeah, but in this case Chris has proven to have reliable sources. So I'm optimistic.

I certainly hope she's getting a mask because the character HAS to have one. There's nothing even remotely cat-like to her without it.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I was hoping for Penquin, Riddler, or Black Mask alongside Catwoman. I started thinking about the arc of the trilogy though and realized that Bane does make a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. The appearances of Bane and now Catwoman have been hugely disappointing to me. You know my issues with that thing on Bane's face...and now to have the first "reveal" of Catwoman without any type of mask at all? It's just beyond confusing to have a director that claims to respect source material so much to go in this type of direction.

Scarecrow, Ra's, Two-Face, and Joker ALL still resembled themselves. I'm not quite sure why Bane and Catwoman seem to be the exception.

And Batman Begins, the ONLY live action Batman movie that gave proper focus to the title character. And Memento. And Inception. Yeah, what a hack. :awesome:

Do you like Bane as a character?

Even though I like the re-design, there's no getting around that it doesn't look anything like the comic book character. I never really fault people for not being happy with that. It is understandable.

What was funny was there was a small handful of people saying it still looked like Bane. As if you showed them a pic of Hardy's Bane a year ago they would recognize him as Bane!

I love Bane as a character. That's why I've been so bothered by Bane's appearance.

Hypesters are a funny lot.

I'm all for it too, but I just wouldn't get my hopes up at this point. The only thing is, catwoman, next to the joker and batman, is one the most recognizable characters, so I'm sure a lot went into how she would appear, not only from a film perspective but from a marketing perspective as well. The goggles do not lend themselves to halloween costumes very well. And I see a lot of woman wanting to wear the costume. So I would not be surprised if there is something else.

hey what curse? i liked return of the jedi and batman forever. not to mention return of the king, which was AMAZING. so this "curse" thing is bogus talk. if anything ims till waiting for nolan to do batman right and i havent seen anything that would be prove that.

I can understand being upset by the reveal of catwoman( although it does say Selina Kyle, so somethings telling me this is just a ploy), but while I respect peoples views in banes mask, I am dumbfounded by it. For me personally his mask was atrocious in the comics and would've looked silly at best in this movie. But if that I'd catwomans look I can def understand the frustration. Although who knows, what if the actual portrayal of the character is amazing? I am somewhat concerned about this talia thing. People are saying the cmu scenes are the end if the movie. pretending that's true, that means the talia reveal Is part of the climax or close. Ra's part 2. I'm sorry, but that would just be extremely weak. But, I personally feel Nolan wouldn't film such a crucial scene in the wide open... At least I'm hoping not. So while I'm still excited, I'm getting a strange vibe about this for some reason. I hope I'm wrong.

This whole notion of "if the essence of the character is there all will be well' thing is a bit ridiculous. If the character looks nothing like the character, it doesn't matter if the essence is there or not. At that point they become "in name only".

This is what I don't get. There's been many interpretations of characters in the comics, so why can't Nolan do his own? If Bane didn't have a mask that delivers a gas, then there's the right to be upset but the intent and basic principle/characteristics of the character are still there (that we know of as of now). I'm sure most of the people complaining like the Arkham Asylum game, and they take liberties a well.

It's just funny to me to see the backlash already.

Good thing a villain's look doesn't really make or break a film.

I'm all for characterization rather than just a close adaptation(look-wise).

Nolan can have his vision. Most people have embraced his vision, too, including myself. But that doesn't mean everyone is going to like it or are obligated to.

Just for the sake of discussion; Say Nolan's Bane looked exactly like he does, but the movie he appeared in was a painstakingly faithful adaptation of Knightfall, including the character of Bane. Would you consider him Bane in name only?

Only time will tell. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that all the set pics seem to be in daylight?

Well Bane with a luchador mask and tubes coming out his head does look like a wwe reject and has no place in Nolan's world. Nolan has made him much better, and has been said many times we do not know if that is how Catwoman will look the entire time in character. If that is her final look that would be disappointing b/c it just Anne in a black suit.

You think Avi Arad and Sony will interfere with what Nolan wants to do with the film? :oldrazz:

How about "in name and characterization only"?

Good thing a villain's look doesn't really make or break a film.

Yeah, the look of two specific characters isn't as important as the script, the acting, the editing, the cinematography, etc., i.e. other things as a whole that can make the film a good film.

Only time will tell. Is anyone else bothered by the fact that all the set pics seem to be in daylight?

It seems to be one particular scene that is set during daylight. I'm positive there will be other scenes in the film set at night.
