This isn't comparable to LOTR's in any way. All of the LOTR's films were nominated for best picture but neither Batman Begins or TDK got a best pic nom. I see it at best getting a pitty nom for best picture but unless it strikes the same cord as TDK (doubtful) I see only technical ones along side that nom.
People said the same thing about Potter and yet the last movie didn't receive a best picture nom and sweep the Oscars.
I agree. I never had a problem with only five being nominated I just had a problem with their bias against genre fair and their obsession with making mediocre or only okay movies win.Best Picture nominations don't mean what they used to. After TDK wasn't nominated, the backlash led to them expanding the field from 5 to 10. They've dropped it from 10 guaranteed to a "minimum of 5, maximum of 10," meaning they can nominate 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 if they want. When there are more spots available, it doesn't mean as much. So if TDKR gets nominated, it'll be similar to the likes of the Blind Side getting nominated when there were 10 spots available. It's just a very cynical attempt by the Academy to get better ratings from mainstream audiences.

No matter how good it is, It's not going to win best picture. That's not cynicism, that's reality.Or what if TDKR is really good, better than TDK, and it DESERVES a best picture nom and potential win?
Don't be so cynical. It's quite possible.
If TDKR gets nominated for best picture I could see the Avengers getting a nod as well...That being said, the competition is going to be REAL tough this year. I think Speilerg will be getting another one with Lincoln.
I could see Wally winning again. Even though they attempted to pay him back for the highway robbery of digital, overheated contrast Slumdog beating TDK's cinematography...they still owe him for it. I was watching it the other day and the cinematography holds up every bit as well as Ledger's great performance. Wally pulled off some phenomenal shots in that movie.
