The Dark Knight Rises Will this movie break the trilogy curse?

People need to lower their expectations. There's no way this will be as good as TDK. First off the whole premise of this, I wasn't a huge fan of Spider-man 3 but it was hardly a failure, and neither was X3 which I also wasn't a fan of. They are adequate watchable movies that aren't as good as the other ones. To compare Spider-man 3 or X-3 to say...Superman III? or Batman Forever? Seriously? You can't put them in the same boat. Superman III and BF is just pure unwatchable crap.

I've said this numerous times, but I'll say it again: Batman Forever is not nearly as bad as people think it is. The only major mistake that it makes is casting Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent/Two Face (not only because Jones plays the role like he's the reincarnation of Jack Nichelson's Joker, but also because the film is supposed to take place in the same continuity as Batman [and Batman Returns], which featured an African-American Harvey Dent [played by Billy Dee Williams]).

Anyway, there really isn't as much of a 'curse' on 3rd installments in film franchises as people seem to think there is, as others have demonstrated.

As an aside, Jurassic Park III should be added to the list of 3rd film installments that were successes, as it was hands-down a much better film than The Lost World, despite being the shortest of the franchise.

A big letdown for this franchise and it will still be better than Spiderman 2.

Spider-Man 3 and X3 can definitely be placed in the same section along with Superman III(or even Superman Returns...which "third" film you want to think is the "real" one) and Batman Forever. All four/five/whichever of them are horrible and terrible failures at their own doing.

And besides, when you do lower your expectations, it becomes obvious why someone would think S-M 3 or X3 is a good movie.

There's a simplicity to even Marvel Studios' films. Ever since Spider-Man 3, we have rarely seen a good CBM with added heart instead of just a basic story. Nolan's Batman films, so far, has had more heart to it than any CBM we've seen except for Spider-Man 2. And even if Catwoman doesn't have cat ears, it will still have more heart than any CBM in 2012, imo.
