No Way Home "With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility" - Tobey Maguire Returns As RaimiVerse Spider-Man

I notice some comments saying Tobey is not good in NWH,though I wonder if that has more to do with his mild mannered, soft spoken Peter Parker feeing jarring in comparison to the quippy and fast talking MCU characters and the energetic Andrew Peter

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm hoping its not as underwhelming as some make it out to seem!

Really? Judging from the reactions I’ve seen it seems his performance has been universally praised. I’ve hardly seen any criticism of his performance but I will say as having seen some of the leaked footage I do think they’ve definitely dialed up Maguire’s witty banter to 11. Maybe it’s to fit in more with the general MCU style where almost everyone is snarky. Even though it’s the same actor and version, it’s still being directed and written by different people than the ones Maguire worked with fourteen years ago. So no surprise if his performance seems a little inconsistent with how the character was portrayed when we last saw him.

Tobey lacks the quips in the Raimi movies but he had a good amount in the video games though. The games based on the Raimi films for the PS2 & PS3 were so good!

He's just as great as everyone. If you loved Into The Spider-Verse's Peter B. Parker you'll love Tobey. He's a bit older and you can feel like he's really been through it.

Sorry man….gotta disagree here. His performance in the video games was horrible. It really irritated me as well cause you could tell he did not want to do it. It was lifeless…no energy and even more dry/monotone then he typically sounds. It felt like a cash grab. Don’t blame him for trying to get paid. I would do the same if I were him, but I’m not….I’m a fan. As a fan that was disappointing.

Also I haven’t seen the movie yet. I will be later today so I can give my thoughts but I think some are being overly critical of Tobey. I’ve said it before, the set up for this movie, the off the wall concepts in this movie are more tailor made for actors like Andrew and Tom. I’ve heard they tried to make Tobey a little more quipy and that worries me in a sense only cause that isn’t him. Again, I’ll be able to give my thoughts later on after I see it.

Also tobey is coming fresh off the couch for this movie. The dude hasn’t acted in how long. We just got to be happy we got him so that this ridiculous off the wall project could happen.

I thought he was great.

He felt super calm and confident. I felt he was the opposite of Peter B. Parker and if we were to see the Raimi universe we'd find a Peter Parker who has his **** together.

Whereas with Andrew Garfield it seemed like he was a guy who never worked through any of his issues since we last saw him. I think if we went back to the Amazing universe we'd find the saddest Spidey yet.

Yeah, I thought he was good. More reserved for sure but that was always the character. I got that sense of calmness from him but thought his chemistry with the group was perfect. The back cracking scene was incredible (and slightly homoerotic?)

I think if you go into this expecting A LOT of Toey, you'd be let down but he gets a decent amount. I feel like they pretty much stayed true to the character and he was a bit a loner. I think a lot of people wanted him to be the older, wiser, leader of the Spidermen and unfortunately they didnt go that route.

Tobey was fantastic. He was wiser, more sure of himself and more relaxed. Most of all, you could see all the years he's put into being Spider-Man. He felt like a natural progression from the Raimi movies and as someone who holds those movies close to my heart, I was happy. The back cracking stuff was hilarious and his delivery of quip lines had such maturity to them, it was just so great.

He was great, he was older and wiser but just as beautiful as the las time we saw him hugging MJ at the singing waitress cafe.

Tobey was great in this and I actually like that he was a bit toned down from the ham and cheese of the Raimi era because he felt more natural with his performance in this.

I definitely got an older, wiser, mentor vibe from him as well. Andrew and Tom being the youngest Spider-Men really helped with their dynamic IMO which was fantastic and I almost didn't want their scenes to end.

His interactions with Andrew were especially gold lol.

Is it me, or did the elfman responsibility theme play slowly when Tobey showed up?

It was like seeing an old friend again after so many years, being happy that they’ve become the best version of them you’d ever hoped they’d be.

if this is it for Tobey, I couldn’t have been happier with how they handled it.

I think it might have, but you couldn’t tell with the roof practically exploding with cheers and applause.
Very true haha

I have to say, when Tobeys Peter
is talking to Otto and they both say they missed each other, it hit me really hard. And then Otto asks how hes been, and Tobey says the same thing he said in Spider-Man 2, which is "trying to do better". It felt like Otto and Peter were essentially talking to all of us from that generation.

It was all so surreal. The little bits of Raimi character interactions here and there gave me goosebumps from head to toe, and definitely that one in particular for all the reasons you said

That small call-back to the first time Peter/Otto met got me choked up.

Otto: You've grown up, my dear boy.
Peter: Still trying to do better.

It was something along those lines:hrt:

It may be an unpopular opinion but I liked Maguire's performance here waaaaaay more than I did on any of his solo films. A lot more variation with his line delivery, and more active instead of seeming meek/timid all of the time. My biggest gripe with those films has always been how one-note literally every single one of his line deliveries was.

The back cracking stuff was hilarious and his delivery of quip lines had such maturity to them, it was just so great.

There’s going to be a LOT of slash fic written on that alone. And meme-able.

It was a nostalgic blast to see Tobey again. Also like that he felt like an adult now, a little weathered, and mentor-like.

Who else thought they were about to kill off Tobey when Norman stabbed him? My word, could you imagine how pissed people would be if they offed Tobey?
