We're calling it a weekend now that Marvel wrapped up its final WWLA program of the con, a panel focusing on the X-Men corner of their universe.
Here's our report, along with preview art from the panel (below).
On site resporting by Albert Ching
Marvel writers, editors, and otherwise manning that panel are Jim McCann, C.B. Cebulski, Chris Gage, X-Men editor Andy Schmidt, Craig Kyle, Chris Yost and Peter David. Ed Brubaker, who is running late, is scheduled to join them on the dais soon.
Uncanny X-Men was the first title mentioned, teasing the return of both Salvador Larroca and Storm to the title.
Chris Gage talked about World War Hulk: X-Men, which involves, as discussed Friday, Hulk blaming Professor X for being booted into space due to his association with the Illuminati. Although it focuses on Professor X, it will involve many characters.
Chris Yost plugged the upcoming "Quest for Magik" story in New X-Men.
Andy Schmidt talked about New Excalibur, which will have art from Jeremy Haun and Scott Eaton.
Chris Claremont will make his long-delayed debut on Exiles soon, which was teased on a slide.
Peter David talked about X-Factor, and how the current storyline - about a conspiracy theory that the mutants have been wiped out by act of government - has real world parallels, noting similarities to how AIDS was originally viewed as a government conspiracy. He also said several depowered mutants will show up in the story.
Jim McCann hinted at some "surprising developments" in Cable/Deadpool coming this summer.
Wolverine: Origins was up next, with a slide showing the impending return of '90s Wolverine villain Cyber.
X-Men First Class will relaunch in June as an ongoing series.
Moving on to some upcoming events, leading off with the X-Men Endangered Species one-shot, by Mike Carey and Scott Eaton with a cover by Marc Silvestri. Schmidt says "this story is nothing but heart."
Starting in X-Men #200 (out the following week), there will be 8-page "Endangered Species" backups going through most of the X-Men titles until October.
The panel was then opened up to Q&A, with Ed Brubaker finally showing up, saying he was delayed because he was giving Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell a signed copy of Captain America #25.
As always, we just publish the fan’s questions followed by the panelist’s responses…
"When Scarlet Witch said no more mutants, does that mean no more future mutants?" Schmidt: "That does appear to be the case," as of the recent X-Men Annual.
"If she said 'no more mutants, why are there 198?" "Read Endangered Species."
"Are we going to see Sinister in Endangered Species?" Schmidt: "Sinister is out and about. He's definitely lurking around, and there is a plan for him."
"Is Storm going to play a bigger role in X-Men?" Brubaker, who was distracted by texting his wife about his encounter with Kristen Bell, eventually answered "I think she's going to be in the book for the foreseeable future, as far as I know."
Schmidt then fielded a question about the Juggernaut, saying he should be about back to normal power-level soon. This led to McCann and Schmidt polling the audience on if they prefer human Beast, monkey Beast, or cat Beast, with cat Beast getting the loudest negative reaction, and monkey Beast getting a bit of an edge over human Beast.
"Is Darwin (from X-Men: Deadly Genesis) going to stick around for a while?" Yes.
"Will Illyana stick around?" Yost: "You'll have to read to find out."
Since Peter David had to leave the panel early for a signing at the IDW booth, the audience was asked if they had any specific questions for him.
"More Quicksilver?" David said he'll be back in X-Factor soon.
"Can you tell us anything more about Layla Miller besides "she knows stuff"? David: "She doesn't know all stuff. X-Factor #21 has a moment that's going to have everybody going 'holy crap.' What factors into it, no pun intended, is that Layla Miller finds out something that she didn't know. And it's going to be jaw-dropping enough that it has that degree of magnitude for Layla not to know that. It's going to be a drop-dead, "huh?" moment."
“With X-Factor, besides Endangered Species, is there another crossover planned?" David: "Uh, no."
"Can you give us a hint as what characters we'll seen as part of the X-Cell (the conspiracy theorist group in X-Factor thinking the mutants are responsible for M-Day)?" David: "Callisto. She'll have two arms, two legs."
"Will we ever find out who Lalya Miller's parents are?" David: "I thought we established that she had parents, and they're dead. Layla's parents do not factor into anything in particular about the character. Her parents died shortly before the events of House of M."
At this point, David excused himself to get to his signing.
Will we see more use of Iceman's "omega level" powers? Schmidt: "If you're an Iceman fan, you'll be very happy with X-Men."
Any plans for a Starjammers series, given their prominence in Uncanny X-Men? It's a possibility, but no plans.
"Will Wolverine Origins ever be good?" Brubaker: "I like it, personally."
"What's the status of Bishop after Civil War?" Schmidt: "Bishop's kind of always been an outsider. That certainly affected his relationship with the X-Men, and we'll see that in the X-Men: Endangered Species one-shot."
"Are you going to bring back the 'Books of Destiny'?" Schmidt: "That'll be touched on very soon, in June or July."
"Anything on X-Force?" Schmidt: "There's talk."
Angel in World War Hulk? Gage said he won't be in World War Hulk: X-Men, but he will be in Hulk #106-109, as one of the character sympathetic to the Hulk.
"Any plans for future Age of Apocalypse books?" Schmidt: "I love that stuff. I'm looking. I want to find a way."
"Any chance of a complete Onslaught collection like the complete Age of Apocalypse?" Schmidt: "I think we're actually doing that, I think I saw it on the production schedule. I could be lying" [he said dryly].
"Are any of the mutants joining the 50-state initiative?" Cebulski: "You'll see some of the mutants showing up in different places."
"Is Jean Grey actually dead or are you going to 'pull a Colossus'?" Brubaker: "I think it should be called 'pulling a Jean Grey.'".
"Will Wolverine cross paths with the Winter Soldier?" McCann: "He does, in Fallen Son: Wolverine."
"How can there still be a school with so few mutants?" McCann: "That'll be touched on in the Endangered Species one-shot."
"Plans for Magneto?" McCann: "There are no plans for Magneto that we can talk about." Schmidt: "Isn't that like saying we have Magneto plans?" Brubaker: "Magneto may possibly be appearing in Uncanny X-Men, but I can't say where or when."
"What's going on with Gambit?" Schmidt: "Let's see, someone asked a question about Sinister, last time we saw Gambit he was with Sinister...I dunno, I got nothin'. Stay tuned. There are plans."
"If you use Magneto, will he be bad, good or shades of grey?" Brubaker: "Don't you think Magneto would be kind of tripped out over the whole House of M thing were his son and daughter kind of wiped out almost all of mutant kind, which would be his biggest nightmare?"
"What New X-Men characters should we look out for?" Kyle: Pixie and Anole.
A fan who clearly did not enjoy X-Men 3 asked the panel how they felt about it. McCann quipped, "Hey, we sat through Elektra." Brubaker: "X-Men 3 or Batman & Robin, come on, what would you rather watch?"
"Scarlet Witch appeared in New Avengers, so is she going to be in any of the X-books coming up?" McCann: "Maybe."
"Will we ever see any repercussions for Wolverine being part of the outlaw New Avengers?" McCann: "That's Bendis's call."
"What was the reasoning behind making Wolverine's son completely evil, and what's up with his haircut?" Cebulski: "The way that we're looking at him is that he's a character with a voracious appetite for everything, be it good or evil."
"Can we have some resolution on the Xorn-eto thing?" Brubaker: "I thought Bendis addressed that to everyone's satisfaction in New Avengers," although some in the crowd apparently weren't satisfied.
With all his books, "how long until Ed's off X-Men?" Brubaker: "I don't think I'll be off any time soon."
"Is anyone from Generation X going to be in New X-Men?" Yost: "No, not right now." Schmidt: "Paige might be coming back."
Will there be a new Astonishing X-Men writer after Joss Whedon? McCann gave a non-committal answer.
"Are Aurora and Northstar going to stick around on the X-books, and will Graydon Creed come back somehow given that his parents are on the X-Men team?" Schmidt says there's no plans for Creed, and Northstar and Aurora are "out and about and we're sort of in the process of putting them back together."
"Will we be seeing Forge anytime soon?" McCann: "Yes we will."
"Are you guys going to be doing anything with Sunspot?" Schmidt: "Probably."
Any plans with Dark Beast?" Schmidt: "Yes." Brubaker: "Really?"
"Will Quicksilver be giving any powers back to any big time mutants?" Schmidt: "Maybe."
"Any plans for X-Man?" McCann: "Ask Jeph Loeb, he loves him."
Firestar? McCann: "Firestar retired."
Any more 12-parters on Uncanny? Brubaker: "No, and I'm sorry for pacing it a little slow at the beginning, but the last two issues are five issues worth of violence."
Plans for NYX? "Stay tuned."
”Are you going to bring back Jean Grey as the Phoenix? It's getting a little tiring that she keeps dying and getting brought back." Schmidt: "There is actively a plan to not bring Jean Grey back as the Phoenix." He then joked "It's just my plan, Joe Quesada doesn't know anything about it."
"Are the Exiles returning to the Marvel Universe anytime soon?" McCann: "Keep reading."
"Will there be a poster of the David Finch cover of X-Men #200 [right below]?" Yes.
Schmidt then mentioned that Thunderbird III and Warpath were missing from the cover, but will be added soon.
End of live updates...
