Working in "Fast Food"

I haven't had a job before, and the way it's looking I'm going to be stuck in fast food as a first job. I'm unsure how everything works, like the cash register. Is everything labeled on the register like the combo orders, number orders, what it's called etc. I mean I don't think it'll be that hard, because every time I go into Taco Bell the teenager running the cash register is so high. :hehe: But this is my first job so everything will be new to me. Anyone who has worked at fast food could give me some advice? :D Especially about the cash register, that's the one thing that I'm not so sure about.

(If this is in the wrong board I apologize, this seemed like the only place it could go.)

It can be fun, and it can be irritating. You got to mess with the customers. I hope you have fun people to work with. I worked at Burger King. I had fun with it. I walked in on the manager and the drive through girl in the cooler one time and from that time on, I got just about whatever I asked for. I didn't pay for food for like 2 years.

Just don't let JAL come to your restaurant and get you fired. Or, was that Catman?

How old are you? Just curious, if it's your first job.

The first day is a bit much, but its not exactly hard, and it just gets easier. They'll likely teach you the cash register pretty well before they ever ask you to use it (usually at least a week into your training), which will either be buttons with words, or a screen with them.

I worked at two separate fast food places in my teens, one a smaller mom and pop joint, and one Burger King. I also worked in a grocery store, and in a factory environment.

Quite honestly, while there are annoying elements to fast food, and it can be tedious and unfulfilling, it's really not that bad if you can put things in perspective. It's easy, you may well like the people you work with, and the annoying customers you deal with are the same ones you deal with elsewhere. Learn to take critcism with a grain of salt, and go from there. Free food is usually the best part, but resist the urge to gorge yourself. You'll gain weight quickly, and get sick as quickly. Shower often, because you will come home grease-covered and smelling like food.

I'm 17. I tried getting a job at 16, but most places do not want a 16 year old. Because they can't have you work as many hours and what not. And thanks for all the advice people :D

And I most certainly will try to get into retail before fast food, it's really a last resort for me. I'm going to try a local K-Mart. I'm thinking they probably will need more workers, as it's getting close to christmas, so mine as well give it a shot. K-Mart's pretty much not busy, because theirs a WalMart Super Center like 1 mile away from it, so it might be a good first job. :D

You definitely deal with your fair share of idiots in retail, but it's not the horror story that fast food is. You could work anything from stock, cashier, carts, etc.

Whatever you do, don't be afraid of the cash register. Any place that you go will have a good training program in place before you ever run by yourself. Places like Wal*Mart, Target, and Kmart should all have some form of computer training, and you will most likely be with a seasoned associate for a little while as well. (At least that's how it used to be when I worked retail.)

I would suggest retail over fast food Karelia. You won't smell like food if you're working retail.

I had a guy threaten to beat me up in the parking lot because I said his wife skipped in line, which she did. I called the cops, he backed down. I'm getting paid ****, I don't need to be threatened either.

I think people only really take jobs at fast food places if no one else will hire them.

or you could always get a job at a video store. :yay: thats where im thinking about getting a job considering i love movies and know alot about them.

Yeah no offense, but they don't give a **** about that.

Also, movie theater might not suck too much. Try finding one of those jobs.

Maybe some adults. I think it's okay for a kid or young adult to work fast food. Heck, if that's what you can get, that's what you can get. It's honest work. In the town I grew up in, you could generally, if you had no experience, work fast food, at a grocery store, or clean bathrooms at Wal-Mart and Meijer. If you got some experience, you could then work at this factory place in the Summer. Where I love now, there are more job opportunities for teens and young adults, so fast food is something of a stigma. When I told some people I worked with a few years ago that I'd worked at two fast food places they were like "Really? YOU?"

Those are two good choices as well.

Let me offer two pieces of advice. #1-Grow some thick skin if you don't already have it. There are a lot of people who look down their nose at FF/restaurant workers and don't have a problem unloading with snarky comments or outright insults. #2- Either get new sneakers or insoles if your store requires certain footwear. The one thing I didn't think about when I was working fast food (MCD's) was the effects of standing, uninterrupted, for 10-12 hours. A few long shifts changed my perspective.

Good luck Karelia. I won't lie: I hated working FF with a white hot intensity. I have yet to meet anyone who really loved that type of job. However, I always stayed focused on my paycheck and the fact that it was only a temporary money maker during my college years. That helped me get through it.

I think you are right. I got offered a part time job at K-Mart two days after I started in FF. I didn't take it because I didn't want to go through another training. That was a decision that I would live to regret.

You want advice...

No matter what job you have, take pride in your work. There's something to the saying, any job worth doing is worth doing well. It's a reflection of your character at the very least. Too few people realize this these days.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!:hehe:

My advice: If a co-worker offers to show you the goat, say no thanks.

I did time at a movie theater. It's the easiest job you will ever have. I got to the point where I didn't even care about the paycheck. I was just happy to be able to watch free movies all the time. To me the paycheck was the perk.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!:hehe:

The worst part, his wife was the assistant manager. I held that over him for a long time. I asked him if he was worried about shrinkage in the cooler. At least use the supply closet.

Exactly.

I would work at our theater, but apparently they have one of the worst Bosses ever. I've gone to our theater quite a bit and the people working there are always complaining about the boss.

Plus one of the persons who works there all the time is so annoying, every midnight opening I've gone to she was like "Wolverine? who cares about him I wanna go home" "Terminator sucks" "Star Trek is so stupid!"

I mean I'd love to work at a theater, but everyone I know complains about the boss, and I'm not exaggerating. But most of the time people are just standing around, I mean I could do that :hehe: Theirs only one theater around where I live too.

...sounds like she shouldn't be working at a theater.
