There's actually an even more boring, less bloody route. Just go back to the 19th century, when Hitler's dad tried to change his family name from Shicklegruber to Hitler, and bribe the judge not to let him change his name.

The name change was legally viable. Alois' bio dad acknowledged him, and marred his bio mom. They might have used Hiedler, his rich uncle's spelling, but didn't.
