You do know what an atheist is, yes?
An atheist is a person who professes a lack of belief in God (Biblical or otherwise). But the kicker in that definition is the word "professes". People can say they don't believe in anything beyond humanity. But when it all comes down to the wire, they still have a small shred of hope that something exists after this life...and that indicates a belief in the spiritual, no matter how slight.

But you just said that everyone either believes in god or doesn't.

An Atheist would be in the "doesn't" category.

I'm not an atheist, but I don't hope that something exists after this life. The idea that there is nothing is actually sort of comforting. I think death is like sleeping without dreaming, in a way, and I'm totally cool with that.

That said, no, I would not kill someone if I was offered "everything and anything ever wanted." I'm not a selfish man, and I'm certainly not the type that could EVER take another person's life. I'd even have a hard time killing in self-defense.

Some do, some don't. To say everyone lives for the hope of a better afterdeath is incredibly generalizing. Not everyone hopes for an afterlife, I don't.

Same. I don't hope for an afterlife, I mean when I go I want to go, I don't want to be like that creep who hangs around his High School after graduating.

What does this have to do with the thread's question?
Actually, this is a natural progression of the topic at hand. It's a question of morality, isn't it? Can anybody really be surprised that religion would come up in a discussion of values and morality?

If the person who started this thread truly did not expect this to happen, I'd wager they're not too bright. That's just my opinion, though.

Agreed. I can see how religion would play a part in one's decision. But I just don't want to see this become a thread about religion.

Someone just finished watching the movie Bedazzled :hehe:

You're too late for that :down

I love questions of morality and such like this. I have these discussions all the time with my friends and family. However, I hate them on this site. Why? Cause they always become threads about religion.

It is complete and utter BS if you ask me.

Religion is complete and utter BS if you ask me, but that's because I am evil.

And yet, here you are. :yay:

So there you are minding your own business one day, when suddenly, out of the blue, you are approached by a man who had intimate knowledge of you and your life, your dreams, aspirations and goals.

Whoever this guy is, he knows too much about me. So he just made himself my prime taget. :cmad:

There is no such thing as a true atheist. people may fiercely reject (or even hate) God as defined in the Bible, but there's still a determination deep within them to either believe or not. Everything boils down to that.

You know... I really wanted to avoid getting into yet another religious argument with you because frankly, they always amount to be one giant waste of time and energy on my part. But this statement is so incredibly presumptuous and self-righteous I just can't let it go.

Yes... there is such a thing as a true atheist, and if you want sociological proof of this then I suggest you spend some time in China, a country where religion is practically outlawed and the majority of the country's citizens live in communal settlements in the middle of nowhere with NO access to Western ideas. They are born into life without the concept of religion hovering over their heads, and most Chinese peasants know not to bring religion into their communities because they will most likely end up imprisoned or executed. If you went to West China and asked a peasant if they believed in Jesus, they would look at you as if you were INSANE. Same thing if you mentioned God... and if you tried to explain such a concept to them, they would probably consider you a witch and have you transported to one of China's luxurious prisons.

But let's look beyond governmental barriers to faith for one moment and dissect your statement further: It just baffles me that you are unable to believe that there is such thing as a true atheist in Western society. I mean, it is ASTOUNDING. You have become trapped in such a narrow little box plastered in Biblical wall paper that you are unable to actually THINK LOGICALLY about the world around you. Buddhists are atheists (well, they're supposed to be, anyway), and they follow doctrinal rules which are not based on any idea of theism whatsoever. We have several million Buddhists in this country who go about their day without thinking about God or trying to disassociate themselves from Western theology. And as for atheists... maybe some do secretly believe in God. But the majority do not. The reason why they continue to protest religion has N.O.T.H.I.N.G. to do with some sort of secret belief of theirs; instead, they protest the fact that many Christians have bastardized their faith and have tried to destroy the founding principles of this country by inserting religion into EVERY SINGLE level of our government-- from the courts to the legislature and even to the executive, in every state and at the federal level. It doesn't have to do with their "secret belief in God" as you Christian extremists tend to say.

But hey, let's take a page from your book for a second... because you continue to avidly denounce homosexuality, you must be a homosexual; and because you continue to mock atheists, you yourself must be an atheist.

See how that works? Does that not offend you?

Really, Moviefan, you need to put down the Bible for a day and start to invest in logic.

For sheer simplicities sake and to get the topic back on track as a discussion of the moral issue, I'm just gonna say it isn't the devil. Just some magical man with the power to grant you whatever your heart desires.

Who knows, maybe he got that ability from the devil in exchange for his soul, but, thats not the issue.

Would I kill him? I don't think so. I just can't see myself taking the life of someone I don't know, who to my knowledge has never hurt anyone and is surely someone's husband or father, brother, best friend etc. How could I justify taking him away from his loved ones in exchange for something I want?

if you insult someone for being something you really are that thing.

But dude, not even for a solid gold telephone?

No way for 2 reasons.

The frist and most important reason is because it would go agisnt my God. and has loveing and forgiving has he is, He is still one extreamly angry fella, also I love the guy too.

The second reason is I love people in general and I would wish be a to be a real superhero with powers but I couldn't do that if I had to kill some one to get the powers than I would no longer be a hero even if there are no reprecussion and the world would never know because my heart would no longer be pure.

I would want equal civil rights for all people regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or gender identity. I would also like my loan debts to be erased and to see the birth of a successful green revolution.

But I wouldn't kill anyone to achieve those goals.

What about, if you kill this one guy there will be no more murders or rapes or anything bad in the world ever again. Now that is a pickle for all you morality people.
