Wrestling: The Action Soap Opera Thread

Gotta agree with the idea of putting Tough Enough on NBC. They need new shows for evening line-ups and it would be something different. I love the way Tough Enough is playing right now. Would open people's eyes to the sacrifices people go through to get in the business.

The first Tough Enough aired on MTV.

I still don't understand how this helps. People make fun of Professional Wrestling and call it fake, so let's prove them right. Let's start calling it a soap opera and calling them Superstars instead of Wrestlers. So let's water down the WWE and make it nothing more than guest host from MTV shows to draw attention. It shouldn't be about the people that put the work into this every single day of their lives, it should be about making a few extra bucks.

Can't agree more.

I agree as well, but that isn't going to get you NEW viewers....the wrestling audience is shrinking and no one has figured out how to replenish the pool...if it was all about "the talent in the ring" ROH would be a nationally televised company

It's sort of ironic that you say that, considering you're pointing out the major flaw in the WWE, which is their lack of developing talent like ROH does. And it's mostly due to them wanting guys like The Great Khali/Michael Cole who couldn't put on a good match to save their lives. Yet guys like Swagger and Rhodes are left behind. Just so that the WWE can push their storylines. Not to mention their more focused on getting Jerry Springer to fill up 20 minutes of the show with a useless played out segment, that could be used to develop the roster that's lacking it's stars. How do you replace Edge/The Undertaker when you don't give guys a chance for pointless segments.

But the entire reason that the WWE audience is shrinking is because of these executives trying to give it a new image. It goes both ways, because while there may be children who can now watch thanks to this PG era, there are true wrestling fans turned off by it.

For every Jersey Shore fan that tuned in a few weeks ago to see Snooki, there was a true wrestling fan that didn't turn the show because of the lack of... Well wrestling.

I think its a number of factors

- changes in the TV landscape

- talent pool changing (guys who might go into wrestling are focusing on MMA, and current talent only plans to wrestle for a limited number of years)

- wrestling is cyclical....a lot of the stuff the WWE is doing now is vaguely reminiscent of what they did around the start of the first Wrestlemania....Cyndi Lauper, Mr T., Liberace, and so on...

Who cares about perception? I'm talking about reality. Although maybe you're talking about from a business standpoint? Even then I still think it's incredibly disrespectful to the talent.

But to a lot of that audience out there perception IS reality. They don't care to learn the truth and even if someone shows it to them many will ignore it.

How do you escape being a wrestling company when it's the core of what makes you who you are? Especially since they aren't exceeding in the other parts of entertainment they're attempting to expand in to, minus Tough Enough. XFL, movies...

I see why they are doing it but its still a useless rebranding. Like you said if it quacks like a duck...

I have no problem with WWE expanding but this shame over the core of his business and making wrestling a dirty word is pointless. It IS a dirty word to many people but calling it something else is only going to annoy the core audience not attract a new audience.

Vince talks about the difference in this expansion outside of wrestling is that he's using the stars to build it on. Well last time I checked most people didn't give a damn about 12 Rounds or Legendary or most of their other direct to dvd movies.

The people who like John Cena or Triple H want to see them doing what they do best. The same reason many people ONLY follow stars in WWE instead of outside companies is the same reason many probably won't follow them outside the wrestling business. Those fans fell in love with their pro wrestling characters in all their WWE wrestling presentation.

If people want to go see a movie they'll see one from someone else. Someone with a movie brand the public is much more familiar with.

for a company that is as big as the WWE is now and being publicly traded.....sadly, yes....its about generating revenue

if anything, this should be the opening that TNA is waiting for....to push themselves as a "wrestling" company...if TNA could rise up a bit, it would probably put the fire back in Vince and the PTB

A little bit? TNA isn't going to make Vince perk up his ears unless they become a MAJOR competitor. Vince didn't really acknowledge WCW much until that happened. Even when TNA made the move to Monday after they signed Hogan he reacted very little....and that was the biggest thing TNA has ever done.

TNA got some mainstream publicity with the Jersey Shore stuff and what did Vince do to improve? Nothing. He just did his version only bigger (not better as both WWE and TNA's Shore stuff sucked a**).

Even when TNA HAD a fresh innovative X Division that everybody claims was so great (which it was at times) Vince was making a f***in joke out of the Cruiserweight division and giving Hornswoggle the title before he killed it.

If by some miracle from the magical wrestling fairy (not Orlando Jordan) TNA gets Vince on the ropes THEN he improves. The only people who can get Vince on the ropes now is UFC. Thats the group you should be hoping does it.

Lets see what happens next year if UFC puts a huge PPV on the same weekend as Wrestlemania 28.

agreed...lol @ wrestling fairy

I do love his and EYs tshirts 'I Love Tag Teaming'

Eric Young is some weird damn anomaly. I should hate him but somehow he takes sh** and turns it into gold with some sh** smeared on it. He makes me laugh. Naming those two horses "Sid" and "Mongo" LOL.

I'll even admit Orlando Jordan made me laugh when he told Ken Anderson "I love your a**hole thing." I think I did a double take.

WWE SIGNS SON OF FORMER WORLD CHAMPION

By Mike Johnson on 2011-04-30 09:46:13

Jesse White, the son of former WCW World champon Big Van Vader, has signed a WWE developmental deal. There had been talk over the last few weeks that White, who has wrestled in Japan, would be signed after a recent tryout in Tampa, FL.

PLEASE don't screw this up, WWE. If the kids half as good as his old man...

and the fans love him....I don't think I've ever seen a wrestler that is as consistently connected to the crowd as EY is

Too Sensitive
April 28, 2011

I’ve been meaning to write this article for quite a while, because it has been eating at me since I heard about Fit Finlay being released by WWE. For those of you who may not have heard the story, a month or two back Fit (a WWE agent) was released by the company after they received complaints about a live event from The National Guard. From what I understand The National Guard is a major sponsor of WWE’s and they were offended when members attended a WWE live event and witnessed The Miz interrupt the playing of the National Anthem. The interruption was obviously designed to get heat on Miz, but apparently it got the wrong kind of heat because The National Guard saw this as an inappropriate means by which to generate heat and complained to WWE about it.

With The National Guard being a major sponsor, WWE needed to act and I guess since Fit was in charge of the event and likely the one to make the call about the Anthem, he was held responsible and released. I don’t want to get into whether this firing was justified or not, but I really hope Fit will be brought back at some point, but what I want to discuss is, in a World so worried about being politically correct, and not offending anyone, is it even possible to get heat anymore.

There are so many tried and true methods of generating heat in this business that just can’t be done anymore. When you look back at the history of this business and what heels did to get heat and draw money, so many of them would be unacceptable now in the corporate main stream world of WWE. I want to be clear here too, I’m not blaming anyone specifically for this, it’s what society has become, but I’m worried that if this age of having to be politically correct to the Nth degree continues, story telling and the ability to stir emotions will become a thing of the past.

How can we have heroes in wrestling if our villains are not allowed to do or say anything that might upset anyone? The interrupting of the National Anthem is a prime example. As part of the Un-Americans in 2002 we got a lot of heat for our anti-American stance, and on at least one occasion interrupted Lillian Garcia when she sang America the Beautiful. We bad mouthed the US and even “attempted” to burn the American flag in Madison Square Garden. Was this offensive? Of course it was but that was the whole point. It was meant to offend, so when “The American Bad Ass” the Undertaker, JBL, and other proud American’s took exception to it and stood up for their Country and made us stop, they were seen as heroes.

Where would WWE Hall of Famer Jim Duggan be if not for Nikoli Volkoff, and the Iron Sheik? “Iran #1, Russia #1, USA haaatoo (spitting sound)”. These guys spit on the US for the sole purpose of riling up flag waving Americans, which were the root of Duggan’s fan base. If you look at the big picture, angles like this actually promote patriotism, as did Miz’s interruption of the national anthem.

Now look at R Truth’s heel turn a couple of weeks ago. I heard WWE received complaints from anti-smoking groups claiming that by having R-Truth smoke on TV they were promoting cigarettes, because it gave smoking that outlaw bad boy image, and would promote smoking to kids.

How are we as an industry supposed to draw an emotional reaction from our fan base if we aren’t allowed to anger people on some level? If our industry were always under the handicaps of today’s “moral standards” where would we be?

Hulk Hogan initially got over as a flag waving American beating the evil Iron Sheik. Would this be allowed today, or would there be fears that it would generate tension in the Muslim community?

Rick Rude would not be allowed to call people “fat out of shape sweat hogs” because he would be insulting and offending people who suffer from obesity.

How would you book a Ric Flair – Dusty Rhodes feud, if Ric wasn’t allowed to insult Dusty for being working class, or brag about being a limousine riding, jet flying, …? We can’t vilify the rich or the poor because that would be discriminatory.

Baron Von Raschke and Colonel DeBeers got heat being white supremacists. There is no way we could use racism to draw heat today. No evil Russian out to bring down democracy, no sneaky Japanese villains ready to “Pearl Harbor” you the second you turn your back. No Skandor Akbar in World Class, No Abu Wizal in Stampede, No Wild Samoans, No Headshrinkers.

What about Gorgeous George or Adrian Street? Would they be considered anti gay for being promoted as a heel for their “flamboyant“ antics?

I’m not saying we should be promoting racism or gay bashing or anything else just for the sake of drawing heat. I’m just saying that offensive characters like this can be used while still sending a good message if done properly and people should relax and look at the over all story being told.

You can’t make a movie like Schindler’s List without racist Nazi villains. Now I’m not comparing the story of Oskar Schindler to a pro-wrestling angle or storyline, but at the end of the day a story is a story, be it real or made up and in order to have Super Heroes, you have to be allowed to have Super Villains. Sponsors and fans shouldn’t give up on, or boycott the Story Tellers for the villainous actions of characters in their stories, provided the over all message of the story is still a positive one.

Food for thought,
Lance Storm

lance is right. everyone is so sue happy and always concerned about being poltically correct. i will quote my father on this. there is no such thing about being poltically correct. regardless you will always offend someone trying to be. he brought up sheik/hogan. suprised he didn't mention slaughter being the iraq sympathizer durring the middle easten crisis in the early 90's. imagine how many lawsuits wwe would have gotten. not mention the crucifixion angle with sandman/raven. it worked it was the right heat. but angle was upset even though raven said him and angle talked about. kurt was cool with it. how can you be a heel without offending people? it is down right impossible. well babyface will shake heel's hand. heel refuses. omg people are offened hello sponsors getting upset along multiple suits. it's ridiculous

it is ridiculous....but sponsors have pulled ads over less, much less

controversy, these days = lost revenue

Stone Cold Steve Austin is definitely a character that wouldn't work in this day and age. Sponsors would claim the company's promoting alcoholic drinking, even underage drinking.

It seems to me that "action soap opera" is more a humiliating name for it than "wrestling". Imagine you're a beer swilling, Nascar loving redneck, would you tell your buddies you like watching an "action soap opera? Would the more urbane, middle class 18-49 demographic enjoy listing it in their hobbies on facebook?

:hehe:

I don't tell anyone I still watch wrestling

McBurials is leaving :)
Now they can start rebuilding the divas Division with Kharma (Kong) If HHH's promos are any indication to the direction I hope he's going in, I'm hoping it's a trail of destruction lined with stretchers, and barbies left crumpled in the ring leading up to a Beth Kharma feud at SummerSlam or Survivor Series.

McCool is not responsible for the state of the women's division.

It's not her there's nobody on the roster worth watching.

I agree with Lance. People are too sensitive these days, and there are too many rules to go by.

if you want to survive in media these days, those are the rules you have to play by....unless you've built up a ton of goodwill and you can afford to push things

i agree lol and even when given the chance they blow it like Gail Kim has blown every time she has been given the mic and do we need to be remember how bad Natalya was on commentary

Michelle may be bland of some sorts but she atleast is solid on the mic to go with being solid in the ring

Seems like WWE has surrendered to the media, in knowing they've been criticized too much and of course they want to spread out from Wrestling.
It's a shame being a fan and knowing this company has eyes on it from other companies most of the time.

being a publicly traded company, not to mention one where kids are watching regularly means you serve many masters

With her husband as the top draw she had a lot of influence and got title runs that really stalled the women's division. I really believe Beth, Eve and Natalya would have been booked better if she was out of the way. Even Gail Kim might have been used. LayDown really buried most of the talent in the Divas division and I'm glad they're finally gone.

With her out of the way It looks like they can rebuild the Divas, because right now being short of talent they need to really need to add some diversity to the card. Signing Kong was a start. The trailers are encouraging.

I'd love to see Tough Enough on NBC. It'd fit right in after The Biggest Loser. And I wouldn't mind it if they Put Superstars or Raw Recap on Friday or Saturday Nights. NBC really needs to shake up their content and this is the kind of program that gets casual viewers thinking about wrestling again.
Plus With SD! gone I miss pro wrestling on broadcast TV.
