The original Madelyne storyline was that, at its simplest level, she was that one in a million shot that just happened to look like Jean Grey, [a.k.a. the first Phoenix]! And the relationship was summed up by the moment when Scott says: "Are you Jean?" And she punches him! That was in Uncanny X-Men #174. Because her whole desire was to be deeply loved for herself not to be loved as the evocation of her boyfriend's dead romantic lover and sweetheart.
I mean, it's a classical theme. You can go back to a whole host of 1930s films, 1940s, Hitchcock filmsbut it all got invalidated by the resurrection of Jean Grey in X-Factor #1. The original plotline was that Scott marries Madelyne, they have their child, they go off to Alaska, he goes to work for his grandparents, he retires from the X-Men. He's a reserve member. He's available for emergencies. He comes back on special occasions, for special fights, but he has a life. He has grown up. He has grown out of the monastery; he is in the real world now. He has a child. He has maybe more than one child. It's a metaphor for us all. We all grow up. We all move on.
Scott was going to move on. Jean was dead get on with your life. And it was close to be a happy ending. They lived happily ever after, and it was to create the impression that maybe if you came back in ten years, other X-Men would have grown up and out, too. Would Kitty stay with the team forever? Would Nightcrawler? Would any of them? Because that way we could evolve them into new directions, we could bring in new characters. There would be an ongoing sense of renewal, and growth and change in a positive sense.
Then, unfortunately, Jean was resurrected, Scott dumps his wife and kid and goes back to the old girlfriend. So it not only destroys Scott's character as a hero and as a decent human being it creates an untenable structural situation: what do we do with Madelyne and the kid? ... So ultimately the resolution was: turn her into the Goblin Queen and kill her off
I think if I were Cyclops I'd just give up, buy a nice cottage in the British Country Side and take up Scrabble.
He has a right to change his opinion. When he cheated on Jean in New X-men, he was in a much different place in his life. The guy came across very broken and emotionally detached. He and Jean werent connecting bc things were different after he got his life back following the Apocalypse merger. They tried to go back to how things were without discussing or addressing their issues and ultimately it pushed them apart. He felt he needed to be perfect around Jean bc of this ideological image that she and everyone had of him, which he no longer was. Emma was easier to relate to as she appealed to his darker side and he didnt have to hide his flaws with her. She was an easy fix to those issuesNo it's that he's harping on it that makes it creepy-
like "OMG! look how beautiful she is! She's amazing! everything I ever wanted!!"
If she's all you ever wanted in life Cyke, why'd you cheat on her and choose Emma? (and don't repeat the "jean told them to make out on her grave!" thing, that's beside the point)
I get it, maybe ole 30 something Jean wasn't doin it for Scott, so he went to the Plastic playboy model. Now she dumps him, so he pines for the new pubescent version of his old wife.
How is that not sick?
And this is not nearly the first of Cyke's messed up attraction issues.
Cyclops is a sexual deviant, folks, let's face it.
Scott loved Jean. Things may have went sour towards the end but he was head over heels in love with her when they were teenagers. He comes face to face with her and of course this reawakens old memories and feelings. Its not some random teen that looks like Jean. Its the real deal. I dont think there's anything wrong with the writing expressing him as having feelings for her romantic or sexual. It seems natural. She being 17 at the moment is a technicality as these are not new emotions, but one he already developed for years ago. I dont think he can be faulted for how feels towards her

Scott now and from New X-men are different. He's grown a bit. He seems alot more assured of himself and taking a firm stand regardless of what people think of him. Does he want Jean back? I dont think thats necesarily the case but seeing her reminds him of a time when not only was he happier, but the world and the X-men were too. I can see him gravitating towards that bit of nostalgia, espcially if Jean can help make him happier again, which is something I dont think he's been in a while, at least not since Utopia formed and the weight of the mutant race has been on his shoulders.
My wife and I are 30 and 31. We've been dating since we were 18 and 19. I love my wife now, but when I see pictures of her at 18... heck, at 15 before I knew her... I still love her... because it's her. If she died and I somehow came accross a 17 year old her I'd be head over heals just the same. Not because of age but because it's her... and that's what matters.
I'd be shocked and very disappointed if Cyke didn't ooh and aah over her.
Nice cover.X-factor 250
