X-Men - Part 6

yeah Bunn's a good writer, so hopefully he doesn't jump through hoops trying to explain/PC-ify a story that 99% of people moved on from years ago

Psylocke's backstory is so awful that I cringe when I think about it. I've been pretending it doesn't exist for years.

psylocke seems like an easy tweak to explain.. the easiest being that residual memory was left behind (possibly along with the body retaining physical memory) which is why she has ninja skills....

or if they want to get all sci-fi and complicated.. when revanche died in betsy's body, some of her consciousness started to transfer back into her original body...

i don't get the big deal about this

It's been a big deal because Psylocke is a British woman inside the body of an Asian woman whose mind is apparently disposable, but whose body is hyper-sexualized. I don't think canonical excuses for the stereotyping and fetishization of Asian female bodies really fixes anything.

o lord.. i'm not even touching this...

every female and many males in comics can be considered "fetishized"

Mad Ones.. i'm sorry, but you've been the bane of my existence for the last few months on the hype, and i'm beyond tired of arguing with you.. we literally agree on nothing and ive grown completely exhausted with your debates... so I'm just going to have to put you on ignore now.. because I'm over it...

IDK, as someone who came into reading X-Men after the switch happened (as I'm sure most readers today did) I just always thought of Betsy as "the female Japanese X-Man." They can and should ditch the more stereotypically Asian elements of her character (anything dealing with ninjas should be verboten), and instead focus on the fact that she is a mentally-powered fighter trained in using blades of various types. The bikini is already gone, so just drop the katanas in favor of going back to her psy-knife and you're pretty much there. Other than that, her personality is defined by her strength, willingness to sacrifice, pragmatism, and mental toughness, so it's not like she's some cipher with asian cliches slapped on, she hasn't been for quite a while. It's only when they try to give her a solo that writers seem to snap back into the lazy cliche-filled writing of the character, and she hasn't been hyper-sexualized since before Uncanny X-Force.

i agree with that... i also never understood the psy-katana anyway... the psyknife was way cooler to me....

if people want to complain about asian fetishism... psylocke isn't the place to do it.. Mortal Kombat.... and I dunno.. all the ridiculous amount of fetishism in japanese culture is probably where one wants to direct that...

Completely agreed, BoredGuy. Her terrible backstory is done and, outside of some kind reboot, is going to stay. The only thing to do is build her character outside of the stereotypes and T&A shots that defined her, which some writers and artists have been doing.

Spidey can't read this because he went all dramatic, but Psylocke absolutely was an Asian fetishized character.

To deny that is delusional.

Psylocke: ruining e-friendships since today :(

Nah. We werent ever friends.. hes offended by everything. Im over it

Its exhausting to have a debate in everythread with him..

Psylocke isnt drawn any differently than other female heroes aside from the fact shes in a thong.. but you know... because shes asian its "asian fetishism"

When every female has their boops and asses plastered and awkwardly posed... let me guess... madeline pryir and emma frost are "white fetishism too"

As a gay man wvery male in comics is fetishized as well... there's a whole community who get off to spandex... but you know... Psylocke is just all about asian fetishism against women... *eyeroll*

Well this is awkward considering Spidey has me on ignore but for someone reason is continuing to argue. A lot of comic book characters existed at a time when writers didn't care about being misogynistic or racist (they just didn't think about it). It's not that I'm offended, it's just I don't let these things have a free pass and I think we should be making the effort to correct certain things. Spidey has had his fair share of being offended (re Iceman's coming out).

But Spidey's right, women are hyper-sexualized in comics (though I would argue that Marvel has done a lot in the last few years to change this). Psylocke is EXTRA troubling because the Asian body being sexualized doesn't belong to the upper class white British mind doing the sexualizing. And Psylocke is sexualized even more than other characters (that's saying something!) Emma Frost is at least empowered by being a sexual character since it's built into her stories.

They tried to give Betsy a more modest costume in the pre-SW Adjectiveless X-Men(the all women crew). I liked it. It showed almost no skin but was plenty tight to fulfill the fetishism quota.

Two things:

For "The Death of Wolverine" what can I expect? (besides the obvious) I'm buying it tomorrow finally, the guy at the shop said he had a couple in stock.

And does anybody read "blast from the past" issues? Like X-Men 1992?

I wouldn't waste money on death of Wolverine, it's pretty lackluster. I haven't read X-Men 92 yet.

X-men 92 is fun. The last issue went super meta. It is kind of hilarious. I'm enjoying it.

I think that's a little unfair to the Flash Thompson Venom, although, admittedly, I haven't had a chance to read it. But the contrast of a good-hearted person and the temptation of the Symbiote does add something that the article doesn't acknowledge.

Otherwise, I surprisingly agree with this list. There are obviously more than 41 franchises, which makes things difficult (there are, what, four X-Men titles right now? Breaking down X-Factor, etc. make things even more complicated). BTW, that cover of X-Force they use with Cable weirded me out. Cable lost a lot of muscle mass there ;)

Flash's new relationship with the symbiote is single-handedly the best thing Bendis has done to me. Idk if you read GotG but they announced that the symbiote had been "malfunctioning" since arriving on Earth and it got fixed on its home planet. So now it's just Flash with a good symbiote fightin' crime like pals

didn't read the whole list, but I definitely agree with number 1
the X-Men at their best (New X-men, Astonishing, Uncanny X-Force) are simply as good as superhero comics get
s'why I wish so badly that I felt the same about the films

I agree... i wish the movies would actually be more like the comics. The movies are good, but there's just that "umph" that's missing
