X-Men - Part 7

Astonishing X-men is SO GOOD. It really surprised me, because I was so let down by titles I was looking forward to like X-men Gold, the new Generation X and Weapon X. Astonishing X-Men is like what I was hoping for out of those other titles and more. Kinda wish it was going under Uncanny X-men, though, just cause there's not one going right now and I like collecting Uncanny X-men.

Jean Grey fans may want to check out the latest issue of her series as it ended with a big twist.[BLACKOUT] Jean comes face to face with adult Jean in astral form, who is confirmed to be the voice that has been helping her. Im not entirely sure thats the real Jean and not some telepath like Maddie or Emma, messing with her,[/BLACKOUT] but it is an interesting development

I'm not getting my hopes up. The boy's cried wolf far too many times at this point.

Life of X part 3 is here. Some really solid things in this issue again. I really like the way this story is being told and how it is progressing. The book feels much more cohesive and focused than all the others and it really knows which story it wants to tell.

  • Most of the time, alternate versions of characters we know and love still feel like a gimmick to me, but they really used Old Man Logan well in this issue. This story truly could not have worked if our own Logan was still alive. That was clear from the opening monologue.
  • That really all comes together in Charles' line: "Well, Amahl... if one of them had to go, might as well be him. After all, he's just a pretender. He's not my Logan."
  • On a side note, OML walking past illusions and going 'Nope' was pretty amusing.
  • Charles was a big part of this issue and his interactions with OML were really cool. I enjoyed his dialogue and the battle armor was just straight up awesome. Not 100% sure what angle Charles is playing, but from what I gather he pretended that Amahl had won, while also saving a small part of OML? Can't wait to see how that works out for him.
  • Angel got his moment to shine in this issue and I really enjoyed it.
  • I like the way they are handling the humans in this story as well. I can't blame them for the inevitable attack in the next issue. Their reasoning makes perfect sense.
Can't wait for issue 4 next month!

This was my fave issue yet. Now Jean is forced to confront the version of her that was confident and capable, instead of just ignoring that part of her history (er, future...?)

Just caught up to Gold 6 to 11, and eh Guggenheim isn't a very good writer. Nothing special is happening. And the return of Omega Red and Xcutioner are short lived. This book is just not very memorable except for the first issue. And they are featuring Apocalypse soon and eh I am not expecting anything.

Will catch up to Blue soon. I'll binge read Astonishing once issue #6 is out.

I think this is the general consensus. It's hard to motivate myself to read it, though I do like the Rachel and Nightcrawler stuff a bit. Wake me up when Storm gets more to do.

I'm really digging Blue, Astonishing, Jean Grey, and Iceman, though.

I only binge read Gold before Blue because I like the line up better than Blue's.

Though Excluding Astonishing, the team line ups right now aren't very interesting and there's a "Wolverine" in every roster including Astonishing. Now I know that they've just started a new phase or whatever term they've used, but I can not wait for the next shake up of the X-Men.

Wow, Iceman knocked it out of the part two issues in a row. I needed this comic in my life lol

Gold is so bad. Some of the panels in the last issue didnt even make sense. Like Storm swooping in with a lightning attack and in the next page she's passed out on the floor. Also Magik goes to Russia in street clothes but changes into her costume when she's in combat. However when she's subdued, she is back in street clothes. Huh? The writing is bad bute the current artist isnt good at crafting a coherent narrative. The writer and artist simply do not have synergy in this arc and i dont think Ive seen it this bad

Speaking of Storm, I dont even know why she is in this book other than to fill a diversity quota. She got 3 panels, zero lines and got jobbed by Omega Red off panel. She has been written like some inexperienced weak novice since #1. Yet somehow Kitty is a more competent leader and combatant than her

Too bad Storm isn't in Astonishing.

this is floating around online....LOL

Gold could have maybe been saved by a good artist, but sadly the art is horrendous and has been since issue 1. I feel like the X-Cutioner storyline could have been interesting, but it was cut short too soon. The rest of it's just been bad. The Omega Red arc just felt like a watered down version of his first appearance in X-Men 4-7.

I'm not sure what to think of the Iceman book. On one hand I still don't like that they made him gay (I despise such dramatic shifts to longstanding characters) and it serves as a major distraction for me... but on the other hand the writer is doing a fantastic job plot wise. It's definitely a good book and is doing a great job in what it's setting out to do. Sadly though... for me... it just doesn't feel like Bobby anymore. It's not as extreme or off putting, but it reminds me a little of the post-OMD Spider-Man. The gay reveal didn't destroy Iceman's character like OMD did to Spider-Man, but it's definitely changed the character from decades of who he had been before. But again.. as I said... it's well written and while I start every issue a little annoyed, I always finish it having really enjoyed what I just read.

I've finished binge reading Blue 6 to 9. I still think the roster is too X-Men Jr. especially they just added the Ultimate Wolverine knock off. I'd laugh if Storm's daughter gets included in this.

#6 was filler. The Secret Nation issues were cool. I think the best thing is they brought back Emma, Polaris, Danger, Marrow, Xorn 2, Firestar and Havok. I always want Wolfsbane to join the X-Men since she's the only Nm original to not join the team. So seeing her was nice. This could be a cool regular line up than the knock offs. I can't remember who Mondo is though.

Mondo is a little confusing. Technically he is a former member of Generation X... but not really. The story goes that they rescued him and he joined in an annual back around Generation X 10. He was with them until issue 25 when we learned that he wasn't really Mondo but some sort of creation of Black Tom Cassidy. But then in a later issue (around the early 60s I think) the real Mondo showed up as an ally of Black Tom and the Juggernaut, fought the team for 2 issues, and was never seen again after that point.

He was also one of the coolest members of the Age of Apocalypse version of Generation X (Generation Next). That alternate version was probably his high point.

The end of Iceman #5 went straight to the heart, and the comic really elevates Bobby beyond the static character he's been for 50 years. He's getting amazing character development, but that isn't the same as suddenly changing a character. He still has his two defining features: ice and jokes, but he has a lot more than just those two things now.

I like Blue. I read it because I think it's great that Jean is the leader of the team, and it's the most connected to a broader X-world. I'm most interested in catching up with Emma, Magneto, Polaris, Wolfsbane, Danger, etc (reiterating what psylockolussus said). I don't hate the O5 as much as most here it seems, but I don't care about Iceman when his older counterpart has a great ongoing title, the series doesn't seem interested in Angel, and I still miss revolution Cyclops. Beast at least is getting developed.

I think Beast has become the most interesting of the O5. While I'm not a fan of having them around, I admit to liking Beast's story since he started studying magic.

I'm not familiar who Blood Storm is but apparently she's Storm from another reality. And will be gracing the cover of Blue #11.

Its funny in an annoying way that Marvel keeps pushing these alternate reality version in 616 books. I feel like they are recycling characters at this point instead of creating fresh new characters who isn't a junior or alternate reality version of a well established character.

BloodStorm originated in Mutant X. The premise for Blue since the first issue was about them dealing with alternate timelines and characters so this is really no surprise and it makes sense given whom the roster is made up of. Jimmy and BloodStorm are among the first but there's still Generation X and the BoTA X-men on the horizon

Yikes! X-Men junior it is
Gen X aren't from an alternate reality though.

Man, I'm hoping that the Generation X story line results in Synch or Skin (or both) coming back for good.
